Citizen Eco-Drive Men's Perpetual Chrono A.T
Eco-Drive | Purposeful Power
Citizen’s Eco-Drive technology powers your watch using natural or artificial light so you won’t have to worry about battery changes.
Light to Energy
Eco-Drive technology drives watches by capturing light and converting it into energy which is then stored in a permanently rechargeable lithium-ion cell.
Energy Storage
The watch keeps surplus energy in a rechargeable power cell. Designed to charge not just from the sun, but also from everyday light sources like indoor flourescents and desk lamps.
Recharges Continuously
Runs for months – even in darkness – with no need for costly battery replacements, so your watch can run forever and you never have to worry about it stopping.

Absolutely brilliant watch once set up you can forget about it it does not come with instructions but a Web site I found a you tube video which was very helpful this is my second citizen watch my first one is a few years old now but still keeps good time I have ni reason to think that my new one will be any differe
I’ve had this watch for just over a year and still love it. In this time it’s been worn every day and is not showing any signs of wear. Accuracy is excellent. I would have given it 5 stars but for the fact that this model is only for the UK and US seemingly (if you want it to update with the atomic clock every night). I travel between the UK and France and it only works automatically when in the UK. In France I have to set it to the A-TM option (easy enough to do) but happily it still keeps really good time without the atomic clock. It’s a very minor gripe, as this is still a really top watch that has relegated my (far too many) others to the display case. As others have said you have to be patient when setting up, let it charge and leave it. After the first day it will be showing the right time and date. Someone mentioned that there is no manual, but I found one on the Citizen UK website without any problem.
I really like this watch, it has radio controlled time, sapphire glass, really high quality finish, however I cannot put my finger on what I feel missing, I just don’t love it like I do my others. Perhaps it’s the weighting, the strap feels a bit budget, it doesn’t feel as premium as equivalent Seiko’s. Keep in mind this 500 watch is competing with Seiko coutura’s which just look and feel higher quality for the same spec and price. So yes it’s a really, really nice watch but in my opinion there is, not better, but more classy watches about for the same price.
Anyone who has had a citizen watch knows you get loads for your money and this is no exception. Great design, waterproof, calender and Radio controlled.
My only complaint would be the charge had completely died when I got, so I had to put the watch in the sun for a long time before I could set it up to wear. Even with a small charge you cannot set time or calender up. So patients is key when you recieve yours.
A really comfy, good looking watch. Very complex to initially set up, took me a while to calibrate the hands and figure out the set up process. Once done it’s very acurate. Easily readable in both daylight and nighttime. It’s a thick watch however I was expecting this due to owning other ecodrive citizen watches.
You need to be patient in waiting for the watch to start! It needs at least an hour or two in strong sunlight to charge to the point where it will function correctly. Once it is charged, the time can be set, either using the radio signal, or manually.
Great watch super accurate. Only problem was no adjustment between clasp & bracelet so unable to get exactly right size. Was slightly too small so had to put small link back in & now slightly too big. Would have thought for 375 the clasp would have had some room for adjustment as has my 11 year old citizen that only cost 110. Hence the reason for only 4 stars
Would recommend this watch even though the first one I received was having mechanical issues and the band broke. Amazon sent me another one and no issues at all settung time and date was straight forward following the instructions from the my citizen app.
Good packing. Arrived on time.
Well, the watch works on light and maybe it was in a dark box for a long time. Had to charge it kept on a window ledge for a day..! The automatic signal doesn’t set the time if the watch is not reset properly. I almost returned the watch thinking it was faulty..! But then I read the manual yet again. And to reset it you really need to read the instructions thoroughly. Since then there has been no issues. One star deducted for that…!!
I waited a while before doing this review as a watch I previously purchased (not from Citizen) stopped working after a few months of owning.
First off this watch is as close to maintenance free as you can get. You don’t have to set the time and you don’t need batteries. You might have to adjust the time if you can’t get a signal but I’ve never found a point were I wasn’t able to have the watch up to date and accurate. As long as you get a bit of light during any given day you should also keep it charged enough for it to not run out of battery life. A small note here as I did manage to reduce the battery so much that the watch stopped. However that was my doing and not the manufacturers fault. I now put the watch on a window sill for at least one day a week and that charges it up till I do it again the next week. You’ll know when the watch is conserving battery as the signs are there if your paying attention. (The watch will seem to jump time and the hands will seem to skip forward). There is also a button that you can press that will show you the charge left in the battery. All things I learnt after the fact as I’m a typical male and didn’t bother reading the manual.
So to sum up the watch looks great works well and has a 5 year guarantee so you know this watch will last you a min of 5 years. The watch is also big and chunky that might be a bit of a put off if you have small wrists but I like it. Would recommend this watch without hesitation. Well worth the money.
I bought this watch 5 months ago, and if I waited so long to write a review it was for have enough time using the watch to allow me to do a fair one.
It is a very nice watch technology loaded, however, in my perspective, the ads do not reflect the exact way the watch works, so you should read the manual in order to understand what exactly the watch does and how it works.
The most important feature is its ability to receive radio signals to adjust the time automatically. It is true, every night the watch automatically try to receive the radio signals and adjust by itself according to the time zone the watch is. The problem is the watch cannot identify the time zone by itself, so you need to “tell” the watch in which time zone are in order to display an accurate time. If you live in New York and flies to LA, you will need to manually adjust the watch to let it know that now you are in LAX time zone. At this moment, the watch hands move backwards to reflect the Pacific Time.
A good feature that is not mentioned in the ads is its ability to keep the record of the months, so, the watch automatically jumps the 31-day in those months with only 30 days. Even more amazing is the watch keeps the record of the year, so it can identify if it is a leap year, so you don’t need to adjust the watch at the end February, the watch automatically would move forward the day indicator from 28 (or 29) to 1.
The watch also automatically detect the Daylight Saving Time season, so you don’t need to worry to adjust the watch hands at the beginning or at the end of each season.
It is a nice watch, the only flaw would be the mode hand colour, its dark blue colour makes hard to read the mode hand position in low light conditions. The Sunday (SUN) indicator share the same problem.
In general, it is a nice watch that looks great, highly recommendable.
A beautiful watch. I certainly prefer citizen as it has been really reliable specially the six year warranty.
It looks the part. The picture does not do justice. Also benefits from being Eco-drive which means it never needs a battery and charges using both natural and artificial light. You never have to specifically charge it just wear it around and it charges as it is exposed while you wear.
Another big plus is, the watch is radio controlled and the time is automatically synchronised without you having to manually change the date or time or change due to date light savings.
However, I did notice it took a long time for it to automatically update the date/time post day light savings change. Only when I visited London it had updated and it had not update while I was in bristol. Not sure why.
Nonetheless I have not needed to change the date and time has always been accurate.
Also it glows in the dark enough to see the time.
I did quite a bit of searching before I bought this watch. When I received it I was disappointed that it would not reset to my time zone. The second hand clicked every 2 seconds vs every second. I also bought the Titanium AT 4010-50e at the same time. I had absolutely no issues with that one. I am guessing I was one of the unlucky buyers who received a defective product. I am returning it and will not purchase another one. What happened to quality control?
It has a high quality feel and look, therefore 2 stars instead of 1.
This is an updated post. After doing even more research, I learned that the watch just needed to be charged. After going through the charging and initial setup, It is wonderful.
Great looking, feels perfect in weight, dead on time and most impotant to me is I can see what time it is clearly. I have other more expensive watches, but need my cheaters to see the time. Not with this.
Really good thanksHaving owned a succession of timepieces, the biggest gripe I always had was battery replacement – i.e. the cost, the inconvenience and, if not using the approved watch retailer, could you trust someone to ensure that the waterproof integrity was not broached. So with my current Seiko Titanium fast becoming worn out, I decided that either a solar powered or kinetic powered watch would be the order of the day and set about looking for it’s replacement.
After quite a bit of research, I finally went for the Citizen Eco-Drive watch although I did have reservations about the size of the dial – but having seen it in a local jewellers, decided that although larger than my current timepiece it was not of the “big Ben” variety that some people wear these days! And, I have to say that this watch is certainly worth the outlay, and apart from it’s solar powered Eco-Drive which eliminates the need for battery replacements, the piece comes with perpetual calendar and radio control meaning that once the timepiece is set, you need never bother with it ever again if you don’t want to!( although there is a facility for automatic US time zones etc should you have the need)
Operation of the watch is very simple and intuitive and the CD rom and instruction book which come in the packaging will virtually be unused!
The alarm facility is also simple to use although as to whether it would prove to be useful is doubtful as it really has no volume to it and there is no volume gain control..but this is a minor quibble
Beautiful watch.. great for everyday wear. You never have to worry about setting the time, radio time sync works great, even in Canada… the face size is perfect for normal size hands. I’ve had Citizen watches for years now and they are the most reliable watches I have (11 now)’ the best part is you never have to worry about changing batteries. My first Citizen watch I got, I was 15 and 20 years later it still works.
Amazing watch, looks even better than the pictures. The quality and build looks makes it look much more expensive than it is. The watch continuously charges itself using any light source and will last up to 6 months on a single full charge! I am in central Alberta and the watch automatically synchronizes with the atomic clock in Colorado every night. The color is actually dark brownish grey, which I find more elegant than straight black.
The watch is very attractive and feels excellent to wear.
My particular watch must have been sat in storage for a long time because it was completely discharged.
This creates a problem as it takes up to 60 hours exposure to bright sunlight to fully recharge it.
Once recharged, it has to be reset and zeroed.
This is a fairly lengthy process but has to be done before it will calibrate or even recognise what part of the world it is in.
The good news is that Citizen have an excellent set of video tutorials on their website to help with this.
I could not wear the watch for around 6 days whilst all of the above had been done.(disappointed).
It is now fully operational and I am impressed with the features and styling. It competes with my Casio Eddifice.
Recommended.
I was somewhat hesitant to purchase this watch because of what I read in the user reviews about its weight, thickness, and lack of band micro-adjustability. My impressions: It is a relatively heavy watch, but about the same as the steel Timex Expedition that it replaces. Not a problem. Same for the thickness; at about the same thickness as the Expedition it is not a thin dress watch, but it is not noticeably awkward like a dive watch. Think of it as a replacement for a masculine-looking bracelet that works in a business setting.
The lack of micro-adjustability on the band clasp is also a non-issue. One reviewer complained that his wrist size was in-between two full-size link adjustments. He probably didn’t notice the two half-size mini-links that can be removed adjacent to the clasp, so you can dial in a precise fit. While it is not particularly easy to remove links, it is no harder than on any other watch I’ve owned; I start them with a light tap using a brad, and push the pin through with a bulletin board pin. Takes no more than 5 minutes.
You have to read the instruction booklet. It’s not an option. But once read, the layout is logical and becomes automatic. Since it sets itself, the only things to know is how to change time zones and how to set the alarm (and rarely, how to use the chronograph), and all follow the same pattern.
Update: two months later and this remains my favorite watch. The watch body and crystal both look identical to the day I first put it on. I love the fact that it never needs batteries and I get sub-second accuracy with the automatic radio link. After about a decade the capacitor will need to be replaced, but even then it is easy to track declining capacitor health using the fill indicator, unlike the way watches with batteries fail without warning. My only complaint: the black anodizing is rubbing away at the bottom of the band. This is surprising since I only wear it to a desk job and my research lab. The part that is showing steel through the black anodized layer is on the inside wrist location though, and not easily visible. Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase, especially compared to my last Citizen watch purchase with a mineral crystal that scratched terribly within two months (Citizen specifically does not cover crystal scratching under warrantee).
So far, so impressed. Looks great, I was worried it may look a touch large as I have fairly slim wrists but it looks great. Watch band was fairly easy to get right thanks to the small “half” links included in the band.
Basic functions seem fairly easy to access, things like chrono could be easier and to be honest I don’t see myself using it given the faff involved to get there – easier for me just to ask my phone to start a timer/stopwatch. Not a big deal, the main thing I wanted was a good looking watch that exudes quality with the accurate and hands off time keeping that the Atomic Timekeeping provides and at a reasonable price. This watch fits the bill nicely.
Registered online for an extra year warranty too, so it’s now 6 years free warranty – good piece of mind.
This watch is a nice peice for a collector, very nice quartz movement, nicely calibrated and precise.
I love just looking at it.. it fits nicely and feels great on my wrist, its heavy and gives the impression
its packed with good quality components. In all this is a great watch.. looks sexy and everyone
liked it so far so good.
Let me start by saying that I love watches. Most of all, I love watches who don’t need to be opened up every year or so to change the power supply. It is why my most cherished time pieces are either automatic (they wind themselves up when worn by the use of a half-disc gizmo inside), Kinetic (same half-disc is generating energy when the watch is worn and in turn charges a battery) or the Citizen type solar powered – which is the case here. Solar power charges a cell that should (theoretically) last a really long time (well, at least 5 years that the warranty offers, anyway).
After being an early adopter of the Citizen Eco-Drive line, I have been disappointed by the mineral lens the Skyhawk came with. When I found this particular time piece was available, fully black and with a sapphire glass fitted, I went ahead and purchased it.
I have to agree with one of the previous reviewers that the pictures don’t do justice to this watch. It is – and excuse me for using this term when talking about a time piece – sexy. The design, combined with a mix of matte and metal-like paint, results in a brilliant overall result that will leave you speechless the moment you take it out of the box. Checking the battery levels is as simple as pushing a button, the time and date are already set, so all you need to do is wear the thing.
There is some reading to be done in the manual about the chronograph mode, setting the alarm, but just to get an indication of your precise position in history, you only need to glance at this once – well, longer at the beginning, but it gets better with exercise. It doesn’t say the year, unfortunately, but you can be sure this watch will switch daylight saving times automatically, will sync regularly with the atomic clock (not that it actually has to, it’s extremely precise anyway), will advance the date properly according to the perpetual calendar and generally is storable for as long as 300 days before it runs out of juice (and this is only if you store it in a dark place or in its box).
It also has a power saving feature that will stop the watch when there’s too little light available and no movement at all. It will readjust itself to the second the moment you pick it up in the morning and I have to say it’s pretty neat to see it move about and stopping at the correct time.
Unless that correct time means you’re late for work. Again.
Great watch, I didn’t realise how much functionality an analogue watch could have, you can set it for the right month and proximity to a leap year so you never have to adjust the date. Atomic timing is great, if you’re someone who cares about having a perfectly accurate watch. So far it seems to be pretty scuff resistant which is great, I’ve had other watches with expensive titanium straps that have scratched very easily and start to look tatty very quickly. The watch almost sparkles which is very eye catching. Charge status is a little odd, watch worked fine within a few hours of charging but the charge indicator has never gone above mid-range, despite being under a lamp for hours, perhaps direct summer sunlight is needed. Save yourself a few bob on sizing by DIY, there are cheap kits on Amazon, but basically you just need a block with a hole, a sturdy pin and a small hammer.
Arrived in less than a week despite Amazon saying more like 3 weeks.
After taking the watch to a local retailer to get some bracelet links removed, I
had to send it to the Citizen Service Centre to get a repair done! Seems the retailer damaged
it by removing pins that should not be removed. So check with any jeweler who says he can do it.
There is no real fine adjustment to the bracelet so mine is still a bit loose, the links are big. I might have to
buy a lot of pies!
Citizen service were brilliant!
Oh! about the watch? It’s heavy but you get used to it. It was working and correctly adjusted on arrival – fully charged.
Just as well because the instructions are complex. there is a youtube video via the citizen website.
Seems this model does not have a screw down crown. Does not need it I suppose. So you can ignore those pages in the manual.
might update this review later.
I have this watch now for little over two weeks, and I must say I’m still over the moon.
It looks great and feels great. As soon as you open the box and pick it up you’ll see it’s quality, you’ll even feel it!
It is the most I ever spent on a watch, but it doesn’t disappoint, save for one thing: the time zone thing…. This is also why I only gave it 4 out of 5 stars. If you live in the UK or US, great! You’ll get a radio controlled watch. But not if you live in Mainland Europe or anywhere else for that matter. Then you’ll have to settle for a quartz watch, since the “alternate time mode” does NOT support the radio controlled function.
I however did not spend that amount of money on just a quartz watch. So after carefully reading the manual, I changed the “reference time” (London) from 0 to +1 hour (my time zone). Now I do have a radio controlled watch wherever I go. But this is the only downside there is to this watch.
I never have to change batteries and never have to worry about adjusting the time again.
So, all in all, a great timepiece that makes a statement, and even if you live in any part of mainland Europe, just adjust the reference time accordingly and you’ll be set for life!!!
This is my third Citizen watch… My first went AWOL on a dive boat; I’ve still got and use the second (a 2100). This is, comfortably, the best so far. The AT4007 is fashioned from excellent quality stainless steel which has been given a “silk” finish and then treated to render it a dark, 2-tone charcoal. It is a comfortable weight, well balanced on a good, solid strap and has [in my view] a perfectly-sized dial: big enough to read comfortably, but not so huge as to appear as an ostentatious carbuncle on the wrist…
Pro’s
1. The classic design and styling are a nice blend of the traditional design cues of an analogue timepiece, offset with hints of the impressive technology within.
2. The solar power system is flawless. You get all the accuracy of a quartz watch, without having to take it back for batteries every few years. Perfect!
3. The radio-backed accuracy. This watch uses a technology that synchronizes it with time signals from masts sited in major cities around the world. If you move between time zones [and I do] this is a real boon.
4. It’s properly water resistant, good for 200 metres. OK, if you’re a hardcore diver or a poser you might want something a bit more specialized, but for most sport and recreational diving, this is perfect.
5. The little things. Whether it’s the blue lines of detailing on the function buttons, or the rather beautiful patterning of the strap, or the layout and design of the markings on the face, or the presentation case, it’s clear that a lot of thought has gone in to making this watch fully-featured without seeming cluttered. It’s just got style.
Con’s
1. I’m scraping the barrel a bit here, because truly, there’s precious little to dislike. If I wanted to be a bit harsh, I might say that a Titanium variant would have been one step up from stainless. The main reason is weight, of course, but I’ve found Titanium to wear slightly better than steel over time.
2. Really, that’s about it.
Sum-up: the pictures on Amazon [no offense!] really don’t do this timepiece justice. It manages to find a perfect point of balance for size, weight, features and design and, considering the price, is very good value too. I’d buy another in a heartbeat.
I purchased this Citizen watch a few months ago and have been amazed with the split second accuracy. It is my first Citizen, first Echo Drive, first Perpetual and first atomic timekeeping watch. I own way too many watches of various brand, but I really love this Citizen watch above the others.
I like it enough that about two weeks ago I ordered the CB0020-50E. The AT4007-54E is all black with sort of a gun metal finish and the CB0020-50E is a completely different look. Having both now, I might start giving some of my other watches to family… because I’m really spoiled by these.
I highly recommend ANY of the Citizen Eco-Drive atomic perpetual watches. Great craftsmanship, great technology and a five year warranty. This one is several months old now and I’ve never had to set it. Still perfect time easily to one tenth second.
It might take you a day or two to find the best place in your house to position it at night… to ensure you receive the radio signal that sets the time at 2 AM. Don’t be surprised if the “manual” radio sync fails. I get too much interference during the day, but it works flawlessly for me in the 2 AM auto mode.
I have owned this watch for a couple of weeks now and I think it’s a great watch. I liked the illistration on Amazon’s page, but when I opened the parcel I was even more impressed with it’s looks. It just about fits on my, not very thick, wrist but still looks OK. When I first picked it up it felt heavy and bulky, but once it was put on it didn’t feel heavy at all. It was all set up correctly when I got it so I didn’t have to go through the set up routine set out in the instructions that came with the watch. If you take time and read the instructions carefully they seem straightforward enough. The timekeeping and general operation of this watch is fantastic, it’s kept time to the very second so the radio controlled function is working OK. The one small grumble I have about it is the luminous hands and markers do not show up very well at all in the dark. Just a little niggle, not a deal breaker maybe, but a star dropped just the same.
I bought this watch from The British Watch Company through Amazon, it was delivered on a next day basis even though I had not paid for that and it arrived in perfect condition. Its a very smart looking watch and well worth the price. Two things I was unhappy with initially were that the second hand was not hitting the markers correctly and I felt the minute dial increments on the chronograph and the dial itself were too small to be useful, I carried out the calibration procedure and the second hand now hits the markers, as for the other issue, I just have to live with it as it should have been obvious from the images on the web that it was a small dial. On the plus side all the other functions are brilliant and are easy to use and set up although you do have to read the manual.
