Another key advantage of pop-ups comes when you are fishing on venues where the bottom is particularly silty, or full of debris. This can cause all kinds of problems if you’re fishing with a sinking bait, as the bait can sink into the silt, or debris on the bottom can hide the hook point. A pop-up bait rises above all that (excuse the pun) and gives you perfect hook presentation in imperfect conditions.

Experienced anglers also use the pop-up to create a cocktail bait, like the famous ’Snowman’ rig. This is basically a combination of a pop-up and a sinking bait which sees the hookbait sit up off the bottom, giving it very obvious visual appeal to fish, and meaning that it can be sucked in very easily as the bait as a whole is neutrally buoyant.
