Chopped my Apple Watch in for this. For running alone, this is better. Plus it doesn’t vibrate on your wrist every 5 mins telling you to get up and close those stupid rings. Dece
Great piece of kit and a good price. I use this watch to track my progress when I’m out walking. Totally configurable to suit pretty much any activity you can think of. I found it really easy to set up and use. Loads of videos online if you struggle. The Garmin Connect app is great and easy to use. The 14 day battery life is very optimistic, I wear and use mine 24/7 and I comfortably get 7 days out of 80% battery. I’m liking it a lot.
I am delighted with my new Garmin Forerunner 255S watch! I was originally considering a Forerunner 955 but spotted the 255S at a very reasonable (discounted) price and decided to have a look at its features. A quick comparison on dcrainmaker.com (EXCELLENT site for all info re: sports tech.) and found that the differences were minimal – as far I could tell mainly some mapping features – and a HUGE step up from the 920XT that I was using at the time.
The watch arrived and I fell in love with it immediately… the “S” format (“S” for “small”) makes it sit so much better on my tiny woman wrist and the display screen is gorgeous. The amount of data I can now harvest is exceptional and I cannot think of any metric that I want for… I even have running power, when paired with my existing HR-PRO heart rate monitor strap, which was an unexpected bonus! In fact, there’s so much information that it’s going to take a while for me to get my head around it all.
Finally, the battery life only got four stars purely because it dropped %charge a little quicker than I’m used to with the 920XT – but that’s to be expected, I guess, given that the 920XT was a very simple display and the 255S is full colour, all singing, all dancing – plus I’ve been fiddling around with it a lot, to try to get familiar with all the features. It certainly doesn’t seem like it will be an issue in the future.
All in all, I’d highly recommend this watch!
I love it, battery is great, I charged it after a week and it wasnt drained, was on 20%. I had well over 3 hrs with gps done and loads of ‘ playing about with it ‘. Very easy to use and I like the smaller size, arrived next day after ordering, and 100 off with Amazon Prime day, I would recommend
I absolutely love this watch. Prior to buying it I was wearing both a Forerunner 45 and a Whoop Band to get far less information combined than I now get from the Forerunner 255. It has allowed me to cancel my Whoop subscription so after about 8 months it will have paid for itself.
The primary benefit of the watch is for running. It gives a ton of data I wanted it for – heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), sleep metrics, oxygen levels, running pace, stride length and cadence (steps per minute) as well as a lot more data I didnt even expect such as vertical osciliation, ground contact time, respiration rate, stress level, advised recovery rates/times, training load analysis. For someone who loves analyzing data like I do its amazing and it’s surprising that you dont have to pay a monthly fee to access everything on the app like you do with other brands like Whoop and Fitbit.
Another great running feature is that it allows you to input your upcoming races and it will plan your running workouts out leading up to the event, reacting in real time to your running and health data and intelligently building up your training volume and then tapering off before a race. Like earlier Forerunners, it also has the Garmin Coach program where you can set parameters and do a full coaching plan from a selection of three professionals. I’d like to see them introduce a bit more variety on those as its the same line up as when I got my last Forerunner a few years ago, but its still a good feature.
One unexpected feature that as a gym rat absolutely blew my mind was that it is fantastic for tracking weight training workouts. It tracks sets and reps, allows you to enter the weights used and is semi-reasonable at even guessing what exercise you are doing (maybe 40% accuracy on that but its easy to edit to the correct exercise). At the end of the workout it shows you the muscle areas worked, the total ‘work time’ (duration of the sets excluding rest time), the total amount of weight lifted as well as a load more data. I had no idea the watch did this and am really impressed. It’s also very useful if you are trying to stick to a certain rest time between sets as it displays this very clearly.
Another function I like is that it gives you a report every morning directly on the watch about the prior day (including sleep details and recommended training for the day). There’s a suprising amount of data accessible directly on the watch compared to other similar devices I’ve used.
I cant really be specific on how accurate the data is but it generally matches up to what I’d expect and have seen on prior devices. Probably the weakest area is the sleep recording as there’s some nights where I know I’m awake more than it is registering and also it doesnt seem to register if you wake up and then go back to sleep in the morning (or track naps like Whoop does) but that’s a minor grumble and sleep metrics are not a main reason why I use the watch.
There’s even more features than I’ve listed but these are the highlights for me. Its a really great watch that I dont hesitate to recommend, especially if you can pick one up when they are on offer like I did. The level of features included may be daunting to new users but its actually really easy to pick up as you go along and quite intuitive.
I had the vivo active 3 and was looking to upgrade the watch to get additional features. I was looking between the forerunner range and Fenix.
Went for the forerunner due to price. Not disappointed the additional information for running excellent particularly when paired with the HRM Pro. The additional training features and modes are great for all sports but particularly running.
The non touch screen and moving to buttons again has made navigation a little slow for me initially but find it really easy to understand. Still finding features hidden in the watch which is great!!
I spent 4 weeks comparing different Garmin & Coros models, reading all pro reviews, consumer opinions & YT video to decide in the end the standard Forerunner 255 was the right blend of features & price for me (jogger, not athlete, sometime cyclist & swimmer, needing an accurate HR monitor, distance & steps). So far so good: changed the default watch face in Connect IQ app, the data displayed in Connect app. Watching my data trends to tweak improvements – but disappointed that I can’t download my HR data for my GP (apparently can try PC app Golden Cheetah, though not tried it yet). Recommended!
I had previoulsy bought a Polar V2 and had to return it. Polar have in the past been really good and I have had some great watched from them. But, what I wanted was good GPS to track open water and wrist based HR. These are features which seem to remain problematic on the low to middle end watches. You will clearly get it on a watch costing 500+ but what about the middle rank of 200-300. Having had this a week it appears to deliver what it promises, very accurate GPS and accurate HR at the wrist. Spot on in the pool as well. The set up was a little glitchy, but working fine now. It looks a little ‘cheap’ with its buttons and plastic case. However, it also appears to do the job really well, no regrets so far, loving it.
I’m delighted with the new Garmin 255. The GPS is more accurate, the battery life is better, the software is enhanced. The Garmin Connect app has some new enhanced features. The graphing of pace against heart rate is spectacular especially when doing a Garmin interval training exercise. This new watch contains many of the features from more expensive Garmin models. If you are the slightest bit serious about your running then this is watch to take you to the next level.
