My nephew loves Lord of The Rings so he was very pleased to try this out. He said it was fairly easy to do and the instructions were clear. The finished project looks amazing. Very pleased.
This construction set is very similar to lego, and also compatible with if you wanted to break it up and use it elsewhere. It has 969 pieces so it is not for the faint hearted. My son found it a little more difficult than lego, I think because the instructions aren’t as streamlined. Good value set.
My ten year son and I had a lot of fun building this almost 1000 piece set. The instructions were extremely easy to follow and clear.
The bulls took us 3 evenings to complete. We loved the addition on the LED light. Looks amazing.
We have it on display on the games room and had lots of visitors admire it.
Great price and value. Would recommend.
Although sometimes the pieces were a little difficult to fit together, it turned out really well. Clear instructions with separated bags but with plenty of pieces still posed a challenge. This was a lot of fun to put together and didn’t take a long time as I got really into seeing the different parts take shape.
The “Magic Tower”, is of course a great dupe based on the famous tower of Barad-dr – the fortress of Sauron from the Lord of the Rings.
The instructions are like those of Lego, however the images are slightly smaller. If you are used to building Lego, you should be fine as the parts are all the same or similar to existing Lego elements. There were however a few pieces malformed but we didnt find they caused to many issues.
i love the fact the tower is built out of a book, this is quite cool.
takes about 1.5-2 hours to build, would need adult supervision for anyone under 7. A great price in comparison to the extent of lego kits.
Review from my husband:
This is something I didn’t expect to see on Amazon and since I’m a Sauron fan I had to have it. It’s basically Barad’ur from lord of the Rings Sauron’s Tower. It’s say aged between 8-14, I think not many Tolkien fans would dispute that. I’m 50 and I think it’s ace, apparently, it’s compatible with Lego so if you have some existing LOTR Lego then this would make a welcome addition to any scenario. It definitely would make an excellent gift for any rings nerd that you know and I’m sure it’s loads of fun to build when you’re bored and want something elfy to do. I love the ways Sauron’s eye lights up too, that’s a really nice touch. It’s really well made and looks totally authentic to the novels and movies. It really is a classy piece and at this price, it’s way cheaper than the Lego counterpart which apparently is going on eBay for 500 quid!! This is a great model 5/5, a bit fiddly but worth it totally.
Excellent model set with great value. This model set is fantastic, offering an experience similar to official Lego products at a more affordable price. My Lego enthusiast son confirms that the pieces fit and connect just as perfectly. One delightful feature is the light on the top, which can be turned on and off by twisting the base of the clear brick below it. It adds an extra layer of fun to the set.
With an impressive 969 pieces, the building process was engaging and satisfying. The pieces fit seamlessly together, and the clear instructions guided me through every step of the construction. The LED lighting feature added an enchanting touch, bringing the castle to life in a mesmerizing display.
This set is not only a toy but also a valuable STEM gift for boys aged 8-14. It encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and fine motor skills development in a fun and creative way. The compatibility with other building sets, such as LEGO, opens up endless possibilities for customization and expansion.
The King of The Magic Rings Dark Tower Barad Dur model is a true standout, exuding an aura of mystique and grandeur. The attention to architectural elements is commendable, and it truly feels like a collector’s item. Displaying the completed tower is a source of immense pride and a great conversation starter.
Love it, took me 3 sittings to build but very happy with this and this company’s prices being much less than Lego for the same build quality is great! Just need to make room on my Lord of the rings shelf
This is my first experience of dealing with a ‘Lego-compatible’ set – which is probably more down to a combination of brand strength on the part of Lego themselves and willful ignorance on my part.
This set is clearly and unashamedly a model of Barad Dur from the Lord of the Rings fantasy novels, but it manages to not mention ‘Lord of the Rings’ itself anywhere in the product listing or the box wording – kudos for that, but probably makes it hard to market to LotR fans.
It is nicely presented in a fantasy-esque themed packaging, and I like how they have designed the base mat to look like an open book – a nice touch.
The pieces generally go together fairly well but we did come across a couple of malformed pieces that maybe slipped through the QA net during manufacturing.
It’s not a particularly large-scale model – especially when you consider the size of a typical Lego figurine, but as a fun model in its own right I like it. It features the Eye of Sauron mounted in the top which illuminates as a nice added feature.
Overall, it’s a good set for any fantasy fan and can be built by youngsters with adult supervision due to the small pieces. For a price of c. 40 (at time of review) it is better value than the official sets but with minor quality compromises.
I stumbled across this and had to buy it! In my opinion the build was quite fiddly, a large portion of the bricks are 1×1 or 1×2 so can be tricky in parts. Took a little over 2 hours to build, the bricks go together nicely and the overall quality is as if it were made by a popular brand we all know. My only gripe, my light doesn’t work as it should, it illuminates for a flash and then off but that’s not a deal breaker. It just looks amazing when finished, worth every penny!
This arrived well-packed.
I received a castle-building ser with LED lights.
I like the design and style.
Number of pieces is 969.
Approx 11.42 inches tall.
Great gift.
I would definitely recommend it.
Whilst called a “Magic Tower”, this is a non licensed set based on the famous tower of Barad-dr – the fortress of Sauron as featured in the Lord of the Rings. I really like the clever design of the tower’s base, which has it coming out of the pages of a book. Some clever build techniques are used to simulate the open pages. A small ancillary build is included, which features a mini model of the tower and a nice printed tile with the towers name emblazoned on it. The eye at the top of the tower is also printed, but the element used is perhaps a little small – I feel the eye should be bigger, at least going by film depiction.
Whilst the set isn’t huge or expensive, the piece count is high due to the many small elements included. This makes for a somewhat challenging build, but does give a detailed final result. The “Eye of Sauron” at the top of the tower is placed on a lighting element, so can be turned on to enhance the display – a slight turn of the light brick base is needed to do this and can be a bit fiddly due to the surrounding bricks.
The instructions are similar to Lego, albeit the images are slightly smaller and perhaps a touch less clear. Anyone used to building Lego should be fine as the parts are all the same or similar to existing Lego elements. This said, the colour choices for many elements in the build (lots of black and dark brown), do make it a bit tougher than usual to see what goes where. That’s not really the manufacturer’s fault, but down to how the tower looked in LotR media (at least the Peter Jackson films). The box art for the set looks great and it would make a good gift – packaging is often where non branded Lego sets fall foul.
Whilst building, I did encounter a couple of pieces that had small moulding flaws and would not properly snap into place. One was not an issue as the there was a spare part in the set which I could use instead. The other was one of the brown plates needed for the base, which doesn’t quite snap down fully. I also had one missing piece (a hooked claw from near the top of the tower, replaced using a part from my own Lego collection). In general though, most of the pieces were fine and these few issues were rather minor or easily resolved.
Overall, this is a nice set which makes for a good display piece, especially for fans of LotR. The quality is pretty decent for a non Lego branded set, but there are still a few minor issues which prevent it from getting five stars. The price is good for what you getting.
I have to be honest, I haven’t completed this yet, there’s an awful lot here! The quality of the bricks is good and I can already tell it’s going to be a nice mantle piece. This is perfect for parent and child to bond over. I’m not sure if this is an official piece or not, I don’t believe it is (but don’t quote me) but the quality is there and certainly fits the LoTR franchise perfectly.
This is a great toy for older kids to get their mind moving and activating that creative side. At 39.99 (plus a 5 voucher!) this would make a great gift for a birthday or Christmas. Absolutely recommend this one.
This is a good build that’s easy to follow instructions. Feels very like a popular branded brick building toy and a far better price. The light is retry cool on top and the kids loved playing with this set. Good quality and good value.
There is a continual proliferation of non-brand building bricks, and this is one now modelled on the famous tower of barad dur. High standard, and good quality bricks. As usual the instructions are not as detailed or easy to follow as the famous brand, but still easy enough to build – added difficulty that the bricks are all black. Final product is amazing, really realistic and impressive. My kids absolutely love it. The box it comes in is great as well, really nice design and graphics. Superb kit.
I got this for my partner, he was really happy with it. Easy to follow instructions, and bricks in numbered packets. Clicked together really well, with a similar feel to Lego. It took him about 2 and a half hours to complete, and it looks really cool, especially the light up Eye of Sauron. (see my photo)
A lego type construction kit with full instruction booklet. This is some sort of magic castle, if it is meant to be a particular one, I must have missed that show or film. This should keep someone of teen or above years amused on a Wet July day in the holidays. Rather that than 45 degree heat!
My son is still a Lego fan aged 28. Helps him do something in the evenings while listening to youtube and watching or listening to films.
Happy to recommend. Would make a great gift if they are into this sort of building toy!
A very good model set at a great price!
Although it is not official Lego, the pieces feel and click together just the same – this is confirmed by my Lego addict daughter!
The light on the top twists at the base of the clear brick below it to turn on and off. It took a while to work out how to do it.
The only reason I have taken a star off is we had two small issues. There was a long thin brick missing and we had an extra brick of the wrong size but luckily the wrong brick did the job it was just a little too short. It was at the base so it is not visible. The other issue we had was a damaged brick.
