Having read the book years ago and watched the series in my younher days i decided to see if it was still available.

Luckily it was, and i jave to say that this series does not disappoint. It is based on two families who are from (ironically) the North and South of America. The Hazards and the Mains are the families and Patrick Swayze plays the part of Orry Maine from the South. He and George Hazard meet each other at West Point Academy and become life long friends after.

However, the interjection of the American civil war does test their friendship and their Families. Yes tue acting is ‘old school’ but i almost forgot how good this series was. Not as descriptive as the book but as near as dammit!!! Well worth watching and if you are lime me and fancy a bit of nostalgia of your youth, then well worth the buy!

Good film, but the 2nd disc was faulty and won’t read.
I am returning this via Amazon locker, my problem is I can’t get it there until 10am tomorrow.
I hope this is possible.

This is an amazing mini series that told the tale of two men who meet when both are on the way to the American Military Academy at West Point in 1844 and forge a life long friendship. As political and cultural differences between The North and the South deteriorate in the lead up to the civil war, these two friends are very much destined to be part of it…only on opposing sides. This has always been a favourite of mine and I thought it was about time I got it on DVD…..before the revisionist woke left, target it for removal because it depicts scenes of slavery.

A surprisingly enjoyable (and nicely seasoned with historical facts) soap opera, made in 1985 & standing up pretty well. Nobody performs above the genre expectations but hubby and me watched over a couple of weeks this summer & thoroughly enjoyed the blend of romance, adventure & factual story telling. The turmoil depicted between north & south & black & white, resonates loudly in Trumps America, as does the stories optimistic lesson about overcoming evil and faith in each other to bring about a brighter future.

This is the complete series, there’s a person on here who has wrote a review which is misleading, the battle of Mexico where Orrie Maine gets wounded in the leg is on, disc one has two episodes which I think this reviewer hasn’t noticed, but this is the complete story and a great watch, buy it, you won’t regret it, great value for money, enjoy

A great series and the first two DVD’s are excellent. The third DVD appears to be from Australia and its content does not match the quality of the first two, especially given that one of the actors has changed and appears about ten years younger than the original actor.

Got this very quickly and slowly going through it (a long series). Not usually my style of viewing but the character build up is good and it’s lovely to see a lot of South Carolina and Charleston scenery I came to adore on my visit there. Lovely to see some good old actors plus others that were up and coming in the mid 80’s and a great lead portrayal be a young Swayze that departed this life far too soon. It’ll be several weeks before I finish it, I haven’t even got to the war yet (spoilers). I’m also learning a few interesting facts I didn’t know such as the runaway slave ‘underground’ network and the reasons behind it.

I purchased the complete collection of north and south – i don;t know what they are talking about – it;s the same as the american version region 1 they haven;t cut anything out – it;s the full version the same as when it was first shown on tv back in the eighties.
I can’t believe it;s nearly 30 years since they made book one – it hasn’t aged a day.
It’s the best series i’ve ever seen, my favourite is book one because JOHN STOCKWELL is in it.
In my mind he is Billy Hazard and always will be.
I like the scenes with John Stockwell and Genie Francis in it – (Billy and Brett).

If anybody know’s why he was replaced in book two can they please tell me, I’ve always wanted to know.
I am a massive John Stockwell fan – i have been a fan of his since i first saw him as Billy Hazard on north and south nearly 30 years ago.

A must have for anybody like myself who is interested in the american civil war.

Just found out they are remaking North and South.

I am a huge fan of North and South. North and South is a love story that takes place on the background of two class conflicts between the North and the South, and the disputes between the trade unions and mill owners and set before, during and after the American civil war. The main two families are the Maine’s (from the South) and the Hazard’s (from the North) and their enduring friendship throughout the whole saga. I felt the costumes and settings were very authentic with great sound tracks and the battles scenes made me hold my breath. In fact, I sat at the edge of my seat during a lot of the scenes. I cried and laughed and felt drawn into this great series and couldn’t wait to switch my TV on again so I could continue watching! This complete edition set contains three individual box sets – however the first two sets were fantastic, but the third was a bit of a disappointment as a lot of the characters who we grew to love in the first two seasons had been replaced by others. However, if like me you love this sort of period drama, then you won’t be disappointed in North and South and any bets it keeps you glued to your seat like it did me!

This is a series I saw many years ago and missed various episodes. Having watched some episodes on sky during a holiday I decided to look on Amazon. The set arrived very quickly and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it in full. Well balanced series, historical facts allied with fiction. Great to see some actors in their younger days. It would also make a lovely present for someone and I think if you know peoples taste then a box set to my mind would be an ideal present for a birthday or Christmas. We all enjoy a bit of nostalgia and this is one way to indulge it.

I have just finished watching all three books. I found books 1 and 2 excellent but was disappointed with book 3. I thought that some of the acting was very wooden and whilst I can accept the change of actor/actress for some of the parts, I found it difficult to understand how Orry had suddenly acquired a brother, Cooper, and why Billy Hazard wasn’t mentioned once. I also found the ages of the two children, Orry Main jnr and Gus Main, very confusing. Orry jnr was born before Charlie even met Augusta, but still seemed to be less than two years old, whereas Gus was reported to be 5! I haven’t read the books, but my feeling is that the filming at least should have stopped at the end of book 2.

My sister had added this DVD collection to her Amazon Wish List so I decided to purchase it for her Birthday – in fact, I purchased one for myself as well; not only is the price brilliant but this is a series I watched some 30 years ago on TV and had always wanted to revisit it.

It didn’t take me long to watch the entire series! It is a compelling tale of the bonds and trials of true friendship with the friends finding themselves on opposing sides during the American Civil War; how their friendship began and endured the tests of time, their loves, families and enemies.

This was not just a nostalgic trip down memory lane but thoroughly enjoyable to watch (you’ll have the brilliant music on your mind for ages!). If it was to be re-made today I suppose certain elements of it would be far more dramatic with the effects available to film makers, but I personally would not want to see that.

It is particularly good to see (the tragically late) Patrick Swayze in an early starring role, pre-Dirty Dancing, I think, for which he always seems to be best remembered. I highly recommend this to any Swayze fan who has not seen it and, indeed, to anyone interested in what I have written above.

I watched the mini-series North and South when I was younger, and was so pleased to find this DVD box-set for sale. It’s a complete version, with 6 long episodes per DVD. The quality of the copy is excellent, and of course the story is beautifully told. This enchanting period piece features superb costumes, captivating dialogue, and romantic drama. I highly recommend it!

Really enjoyed watching this again. Saw original in the 80s and it’s still a great programme. Good mix of historical war drama and romance. Fab costumes and sets. First and second series are much better than the third, which is poorer quality. Great cast, however in third series some of the orignal actors have been changed to others who look nothing like the previous ones. That said, still a good story and will watch over again. Hard to watch just one episode, you want to keep watching more! Great price, excellent value. Well worth buying.

I watched this series first when I was nine years old and fel madly in love with pretty much everything about it. The story was great, the characters interesting, the clothes were out of this world and the setting during the Civil War made it absolutely fascinating to watch. I’ve since re-watched it as an adult a couple of times and can’t help but love it just as much now. However, the third part of the series isn’t at all as good as the original North and South. The story kind of borders on the silly and somehow it looks a lot cheaper than the series from the 80s. Since this box is so inexpensive you can just buy it anyway and skip the third part of the story.

A most enjoyable and compelling DVD providing many evenings of pleasure. It was hard to refrain watching another episode having
just watched two.
The acting was very good causing me to feel the hate and the fear
portrayed by the actors throughout the film.
While enjoyed immensely Books 1 and 2 the third one lost it’s
appeal with the demise of Patrick Swayze’s character.
Overall very much worth your charge. Thankyou.

I was’nt too sure how north ans south would be after all these years, but it’s fantastic, lots of famous people that we’re not famous at the time(Kirsty Alley, Ricker off star trek next generation) to name just two, also big stars like robert redford, the story line is a bit mills & boon but swayze is outstanding and now i’m older I understand the sexual conitations better, all in all a good buy, a bargain if your remember it.

The first two seasons are superb but the third, made several years later is dreadful. A character who died in a colossal explosion is resurrected with only a few scars, no attempt is made to replace Charlie, one of my favourite characters, with an actor who even begins to look like him, and it is a very tired and desperate story. Better buy the first 2 seasons and forget the third.
