The game has a fun concept and we have enjoyed playing it so far. Some of the sums to calculate might be a little challenging for younger players so we leave these out at the moment. The cards have a magic star which reveals the correct answer but you have to persevere and rub really hard to see it, but it still feels magical and children will love this aspect.
This is an impressive game and I recommend it.
However, inflation has hit this product hard. I bought it on 16th November 2022 (three weeks ago) for exactly 5it was then “reduced” on Black Friday to just over 9and now (mid-December) it is 12.50!
That certainly is some magic maths.
Good game but you have to rub the counters to reveal the number and I think it’s quite tricky for a child to do, you have to rub quite hard
I’ve had this a while now, bought as a present for my little girl. It’s been played quite a bit and its great that it encouraged her to do maths. She liked the magic element of it although it didn’t quite work as well with little hands, most of the time I had to hold the pieces for her to reveal the numbers.
We love orchard games in our house. We have so many, I bought this one my my daughters 5th birthday. She’s learning her sums at school and we thought this would be fun. She loves it! The sums equal ingredients to make a potion. Fab!
To be honest, anything from Orchard Toys gets my vote. They create amazing games that you can play with your kids that are not only fun, but also educational as well. Both me and my daughter love their games, and she finds them hugely educational as well. They’re simple games usually, but I find that they’re also really helpful in her growth. I cannot recommend this highly enough, or anything from Orchard Toys really.
This is a spelling game which helps youngsters learn, the fact that they can use the magic wand to help see the letters they need is the main plus for this game. My only complaint is that the letters can be difficult to see when using the red filter in the wand so the sand timer can easily run out while the child is still looking to find the matches. I get round this be turning it over again and saying they are allowed extra time.
Bought as a gift and the receiver loves it. 5 year old and she couldn’t wait to get into it. I would definitely recommend this brand as I bought a few more as gifts and even my own 3 year old
My children love this game. Purchased for my 4yo as she’s started school and wanted to help with phonics. We decided to keep it simple by only have the 4 letter sound cards in the game but will add the others as she recognises more sounds and letters. The only thing I don’t like about it is the wand is quite flimsy. It should be made from the same thickness as the letter cards as it would last alot longer. I can see me having to think about how to ensure the wand doesn’t get broken as it makes the game more interesting for the children. Without it it would be a game of memory
Me and my daughter loved this set. It’s hours of fun and she learned to count better too. U don’t need to scratch it to reveal the magic number u just heat it up with your fingers squeeze in-between your fingers. So it can be used over and over again.
Bought this as a stocking filler for Granddaughter for Christmas. She is just 5 and very curious and keen to learn about numbers. According to my daughter, she is obsessed and has already learned lots with it. (Btw, the heated reveal DOES work)
As I have previously said, orchard games seem to have gone up in price of late, which is a real shame.
My grandson loves this game. He identifies with the different ingredients of the spells and loves the pictures. We are just doing the adding at the moment and will progress to subtraction, multiplication as he gets older.
Just getting him used to his sums is nice for him, it’s educational and fun at the same time
It’s a really well made game of great quality. Really good at encouraging solving addition and subtraction problems as well as a few simple times tables (10×2) which is what a child in year 1 (5 years old) should be able to answer (using their fingers to work out if needed) you have to run quite hard to get the magic number to appear.
Brilliant game. 4 year old love it and has easy spelling for her. 7 year old loves it and has the next level up spelling for her. Idea for any age group. It does need some parent supervision if you’re playing with little ones just to help. The timer is very quick so we adapted the game slightly
This is a great little game. Teaches spellings while making it more exciting for the children as they pretend they are wizards or witch’s looking for the letter with the magic wand. Me and my little girl who is 5 have enjoyed this and I would really recommend for kiddies who are starting out learning their letters and basic words but think older children would enjoy too.
Well thought out game as you would expect from Orchard. After some trial and error, discovered card needs to be on a hard surface ( eg table) and rubbed hard to reveal the answer. Downside to the game is that there are a relatively small number of cards so once kids have played it a few times they remember the answers so they get bored and it has lost its educational value.
The game is not as easy as other games and there is lots of pieces and instructions and little one got a bit fed up. We havent bothered with it again
Some of their other games are loved by the whole family and we go back to these.
Brilliant. My son is reasonably intelligent, an excellent reader but really really struggling with basic maths. I think he just finds it SO DULL. But I want him to have a good start so I bought this. And a hundred other bits and pieces to trick him into learning sums.
We already have quite a few Orchard Toys and the children love them all, this game is no exception.
They love the disgustingness of the spell ingredients (bogeys, poo, rottten teeth, etc) and the fact you rub on the cards to reveal the answer. You have to rub pretty hard. It gives them more of a thrill, the anticipation of finding out if they are right or not. Well, maybe.
A brilliant card game that will help children improve their maths skills. We played this with my 6-year old nephew and everybody enjoyed it. Each round involves answering an arithmetic sum (they are about the right standard for years 1-2, adding, subtracting and basic multiplication). The way you check the answer by rubbing the back of the card adds a bit of extra suspense to the proceedings and it’s fun to collect the ingredients for the spell (which are all suitably disgusting such as rotten apples, skulls, maggots etc, my nephew found them all fun to collect). My only gripe was that the ingredients didn’t have any link to the sum that was answered, it would be nice if to get a full set of ingredients you needed to get 1 addition, 1 subtraction and 1 multiplication, which would help to add an extra dimension to the game.
The product is well made with nice bright pictures that are appealing to children. My only concern would be that the way the answers are revealed by rubbing the card might not stand up to repeated plays.
Overall, I would highly recommend this game as a fun way of helping children improve their maths.
