Brilliant radio better than the Baofeng radio’s only let down is battery life but you can buy better battery if you search Google. But over all would definitely Recommend this radio
I bought this radio to listen into 2m and 70cm transmissions whilst preparing for mu UK ham Radio License. After reading the comprehensive instructions supplied and watching some You Tube videos, I found it extremely easy to use. Free software to programme the radio is available. I did buy a different antenna to improve reception.
This works well, and I have had good contacts over 10 miles using as a handheld inside a 2nd story flat with just the supplied aerial. However when transmitting on 5 watts it delivers mild RF burns if your hand touches the charging pins while transmitting, which are situated in a postion that you will normally touch them when holding the radio. Just uncomfortable rather than painful so not a huge issue, but knocked off a star.
After having a pair of RB85 radios and being pleased with them I thought I would have a look at the RT85
First impressions are good. The radio shares a lot of similarities with other Chinese radios in this price range.
However, in my opinion this one is better in a number of ways.
Excellent display, very readable.
Comfortable to hold. Unlike others it does not have the feeling of half a brick.
Must mention the Aerial connector, unlike most others in this price range it has a female aerial socket and the aerial itself has a male plug. So opposite to Baofeng’s and others. But easy enough to use a gender changer if you have aerials that have the opposite fittings.
Power output is fairly consistent across its range into dummy load. The supplied aerial works well and I can’t see myself changing it for another.
Easy to fit in base charger unit and just standing it in the base makes it more stable than most.
Audio quality is excellent as is the volume of received audio.
As with most Retevis radios the instruction book could be better written and the print is very small. I have downloaded a copy from the Retevis site and put it on an e-reader which solved the readability problem.
To sum up it is in my opinion excellent value for money and worth purchasing.
If you have experience with Baofeng radios then the menu system is very similar. The build quality is good, the unit feels sturdy and is comfortable in the hand. Audio is adequate both receive and transmit. VFO mode is simple to use and with dual watch you can monitor one frequency whilst using another. It’s a capable radio with a fairly good battery life, however the supplied antenna isn’t great but fortunately there are aftermarket ones readily available. A slightly better option than Baofeng and, at the price, well worth the investme
Using the dedicated software this radio is very easy to program and keep up to date with later acquired frequencies. Quality is very good for the price, don’t know how this can be produced for the price
A nice radio with good audio on receive. I’ve had good reports on transmit audio quality. Retevis programming software is hard to find and Chirp does not support this device at this moment. Battery life is poor, I am only getting a days worth of use from a fall charge. Programming via the key pad is complicated and time consuming.
A good buy for a first radio.
I really like the feel of this radio, it’s important when you are using for any length of time that you are sure of a good performance and the radio is not going to let you down or let down the people you may be supporting. So far so good, I am well pleased.
Radio was brought for an experiment and a replacement for radio that I accidentally broke. I seen this in the corner of my eye and thought for the price il try it out. Great little radio. Great for your first radio. I.e. foundation license holders.
