Fast and compact.
Good storage for its size and use.
Functions as intended and mainly use for extended storage for my series S but i think this is also good for cameras/video storage.
Very easy to use plug and play and format depending on your device requirements.
Zero noise and very light with its standard warranty from manufacturer.
Overall happy with the purchase.
It’s size is its greatest asset and it’s greatest downside. You could fit it into a shirt pocket, if you had one but it is so lightweight that it doesn’t stay where it is put! Other than that it works exactly as it should. I am a Mac user and have so far encountered no problems.
I also use a Samung T5 and T7 SSD storage as back-up drives and needed some extra fast external storage. The Sandisk Extreme Portable gets good reviews overall. Both devices are small and very fast in terms of transfer speeds. When I looked on Amazon to buy another storage SSD there was a good discount on the Sandisk Extreme Portable 2TB so I decided to purchase it over the T7. I’ve given it 4 stars as I always use the password/encrypt feature of these drives to keep my data safe and I just find the Sandisk Unlocker software less easy to use than Samungs equivalent. When I connect the drive it is detected straightaway by windows but the Sandisk Drive Unlocker is slow to detect the drive and unlock. The unlocker .exe was also being blocked by windows, which I have now allowed through Controlled Access. Maybe it’s just my laptop but If it worked as good as the Samsung software does it would be 5 star.
his product, upon first couple of uses, works very well and fast. the device was delivered extremely quick and is very portable in a pocket, bag etc. it also comes with a USB adapter as its main cable is USB-C.
Having worked in tech retail for many years, I cannot emphasis enough, how important it is to buy reliable products. If you are a photographer, you need to rely on memory cards and storage that won’t fail(or are less likely to fail). Losing data could potentially damage your business. I am prepared to spend more on SanDisk because of their lengthy reputation of producing quality products. I could’ve saved alot of money, but then I would’ve been worried about failure. This item is super fast and super secure. And no. I don’t work for them.
This is a fast, robust SSD , with 2TB of storage. Purchased at a Amazon deal price that makes this a very cost effective storage solution at 121! Highley recomended. Also can take files from both Mac and PC!
“I’ve got one Velcro strip taped to the back of my MacBook Pro screen. I edit directly from it in DaVinci Resolve.” I’ve traveled with it and it seems pretty hardy
This unit certainly works just fine. However, it’s impossible to write a full review until it stops working and know how long it works for. I’m pretty sure it will work for many years – but you never know.
On macOS with this you’re not going to get the speeds advertised (for that you’ll need a tbolt 3/4 SSD) but if like me you’re coming from spinning disks you’ll still be well pleased.
This has taken me from backing up (example) 6.88GB in 8 minutes on a spinning disk (LaCie) to just 39 seconds. I’m not complaining!
I use it to store my photography. If you run on Windows do search online for performance tweaks as there is some latency when accessing. Once I tuned caching etc the device worked perfectly
Very fast read/write, small and light enough to carry around, no moving parts to be careful with, black but with a little bit of orange, so I’m less likely to lose it somewhere. I like it a lot.
The drive is compact and very fast. It also does not require a separate power source unlike some drives making it ideal for travelling. Have ordered a second one to replace and older portable drive as this is so much faster than the older usb2 types.
I bought this because of a faulty SSD I was using was making my downloads extremely slow. When I unplugged the faulty SSD and used this it made the download speed so much faster. What use to take 1-3 hours now installs within 30 minutes. Definitely would recommend if you’re downloading large games, transferring/downloading huge files or need extra space for work projects.
First delivery just had an empty box 🙁 but replacement had the drive inside 🙂
Really slow at first, until I unrealised most of my USB are USB2 and not USB3. Once I used the right port it was pleasingly fast.
Only lose a star as the cable included feels quite cheap and poorly made.
It works, as I’ve tried several before getting one… l purchased this to work with my cars “Dashcam”… It’s a C class 300… this for any other drivers looking for more space to record and an actual drive that works… Works for myself…
I have no complaints, everything is excellent, I thought that the orange insert was active and would light up when connected. The price isn’t bad, hopefully, it will last a long time. However, it hasn’t been thoroughly tested yet.
Bought the 1TB on sale. A fast a small portable Drive to have in my bag.Transfer files on the go from my camera, quickly and have my photos and video stored safely on the drive until I get back to the studio. Highly recommend. Would buy again.
One of the best solutions for portable and sturdy SSDs – great brand!
If you lose the USB-C cable provided, ensure to buy a ‘data’ cable replacement (not to be confused with a regular USB-C power cable as your transfer speeds will suffer.
Beautifully designed, very tactile and very good transfer speed. The only criticism is that the cable that comes with it is too stiff for a lightweight device. It prevents positioning of the drive where you want to put it..
Ive used various memory sticks, and always use sandisk cards in my DSLR. that is what I have bought this device for to store my photos. safe, light, fast speeds all I want as an amateur highly reccomend.
Bought this SSD (M.2 SSD internally) to use as an external drive for an iPad Pro with USB-C but also connects to my iMac with USB, the USB-C cable has an adapter to use USB. Connected it to the iMac and formatted using APFS then moved pictures etc to the iPad, accessing with the “Files” app.
It’s a nice lightweight SSD and pretty rugged and waterproof
Didn’t have enough space for Baldur’s Gate 3 or Starfield. The external drive works really fast and both games load quickly. The drive is quite light. The lead is quite short but the space in the device mean you can hang it from another lead to stop from hanging.
Smaller and lighter than i expected which is a plus. Fits in your trouser pocket easily and is a great memory size to store whatever you need.
Cable is a but small for dangling of edge of iPad when watching films but since the SSD is so light, theres no strain on the socke
I’ve been a loyal customer of SanDisk for quite some time now, and the SanDisk Extreme 2TB portable NVMe SSD continues to impress me with its exceptional performance and reliability. This is actually my third purchase of this fantastic device, and I felt compelled to share my positive experience.
First and foremost, the speed of this SSD is simply mind-blowing. With read speeds of up to 1050MB/s and write speeds of 1000MB/s, it’s like having a turbocharger for my data transfers. Whether I’m transferring large video files or working on intensive photo editing tasks in Lightroom, this SSD handles everything with ease. It significantly reduces the time I spend waiting for files to load or transfer, making my workflow smoother and more efficient.
The durability of this SSD is another standout feature. Its water and dust-resistant design give me peace of mind when I’m on the go. I can confidently take it with me on outdoor shoots or in less-than-ideal conditions without worrying about data loss. SanDisk has truly built a device that can withstand the rigors of real-world use.
Moreover, the sleek black design of this SSD is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional. It’s compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry in my bag or pocket. The USB-C connectivity ensures fast and hassle-free connections with my various devices.
What I appreciate most about the SanDisk Extreme 2TB portable NVMe SSD is its excellent value for money. SanDisk consistently delivers top-notch performance and durability at a price that won’t break the bank. In fact, I’ve made it a yearly tradition to upgrade to a new one because the improvements are always worth it.
First the good points.
It actually lives up to all that SanDisk claims of it. It is super fast. So far it has been very reliable. It is much smaller than I was expecting, but that is a good thing it isn’t a bulky normal-sized SSD, this makes it so very easy to carry with you, It ALMOST fits in my wallet. It is also USB C, rather than the traditional SSD weird USB, making it much more compatible I use it it on my iMac, MacBook, Windows 11 and my Linux server with absolute ease. I love it.
HOWEVER: It has one major flaw, it has no activity light, so it is very difficult to tell if you have plugged in properly and, much more importantly, when it has actually been fully ejected. If SanDisk ever does another version of this I hope they include an activity light (and make it small enough to fit in my wallet); then it will be perfect. Despite this, I recommend this SSD
Well-known reliable quality brand, good capacity, size and weight.
If you’re going to use one of these as I did, to make an image of your laptop disk for protection against losing your system and all the contents, then you want to have something totally reliable to store it on.
I doubt you’ll find much better than this, so its worth every penny. There’s also a nice little case available to keep it in!
During a promotional period, I made the decision to purchase this product. In my assessment, it’s an excellent hard drive that boasts rapid responsiveness. I’ve employed it to store the video files related to a feature film I recently shot. One noteworthy advantage is that I can edit the content directly on this device without encountering any delays, eliminating the need to transport it to the picture editor for further editing. I found its functionality to be so satisfactory that I proceeded to order an additional unit.
4atab for this price in this compact size is marvelous. I’ve already had the 1TB for a year and it’s great. I’ve read in other review that both these do start disconnecting. I had this problem too but bought a new high bandwidth cable cable and its solved it. Now I’ve got this 4TB one and I’m just as happy with that. It is fast. Really fast. 510Gb transfer worked out to be 3 seconds a gig. It ain’t 1 second. But it’s enough.
Apparently my worst delivery with Amazon is for my most expensive order. Cannot believe how you treated this tiny little box..I’m speechless
Product – tiny lovely and wonderful gadget. A bit manipulated by the advertising speed tho…. it gets to around 80mb when I copy the data over….
After a very bad experience with one amazon delivery where a book was coming instead of a phone , today I receive the package open/ broken(as you can see on the image ) , and when I open the box it was almost to swear that I don’t have the product inside .
Grate delivery time , grate value for money .
Very fast and ssd. I truly recommend it !
The investment is truly justified in terms of value for money. Having purchased it a few days ago, I’ve begun transferring all my data from various PCs and laptops. It’s notably swift in writing data compared to other products, and its compact, portable design is a plus. However, it’s important to note that data transfer speed can fluctuate between 80-200 MB per second, potentially influenced by the speed of your PC or laptop. This is due to the bidirectional limitation in data transfer, so it’s advisable not to anticipate exceedingly high speeds on your computer or laptop. Nevertheless, this speed proved satisfactory for me, allowing me to move approximately 1 TB of data in just a few hours.
I love how fast the SSD is but I must say that I bought for one price and they decreased a lot after 1 month so I got a bit sad with that. If you have the chance to wait they normally will cost you cheaper.
On three operating systems (Mac, Linux Debian, Windows 10) I have had the same problem. I run an experiment and capture approximately 20Gb->300Gb of data in RAM and then offload it via USB3 to the SanDisk device – I get around 200M bytes/s – not blistering, but fast enough. The problem comes when I have another large file to write, the card just has zero bytes transfer. It sits there for a couple of minutes and then resumes. The files are written correctly, the CRC of the original and copy are the same. It does get very hot, even when idle, much hotter when writing, perhaps it is a thermal problem?
The first one I got arrived looking fine, but after writing to it for a little bit of time the front popped off around the bottom of the casing between the front pannel and the rubber bumper. (See picture). You could see the inside of it quite clearly if you didn’t press it back into place, but it’d pop again after a few minutes, slowly opening up again. After describing this fault to Amazon, they issued a replacement and I sent this one back – after wiping it completely. I put it down to being a defective unit. Does happen sometimes, nothing is perfect.
The replacement arrived and I started playing around with it.
It came formatted with ExFAT, as well, so be aware, if your device doesn’t support ExFAT, you just need to format it to something that can read it.
I got speeds faster than advertised, 1086MBps read (vs 1050MBps advertised) and 1038MBps write (vs 1000MBps advertised).
There was 1.81TiB of usable space on the 2TB version I purchased, which is absolutely expected and not false advertising as some of the comments suggest. (A quick note to those people, a TB is not the same as a TiB. The 2TB version is 2TB, which is ~1.81TiB, what it shows in the OS, albeit falsely labeled in Windows).
The leaflet suggests I can update the firmware on it, and should do that when I get it, however I am unable to find anything on the website about this and I assume it should be fine. It says it has hardware encryption capabilities, which uses the software provided but I never trust that stuff. I just formatted it to EXT4 in Linux (My OS of choice) and used Veracrypt, which you can use in Windows (and MacOS, I think), to encrypt my drive with FDE (Full Disk Encryption).
The drive is extremely responsive and I was able to fill it up with my files, and was able to read them all afterwards. It should be noted that whilst the first one got hot during operations, the second one seemed to run quite cool. I’m not sure why this is and I’m not going to complain either.
It seems to be quite solidly built and I do recommend it if you want to store lots of things, but it may be more expensive than a hard drive or the equivalent in M.2/NVMe. I got mine during Prime Day so it was quite cheap.
All in all I highly recommend it. It’s a solid drive and time will tell if it’s reliable. I will update this after a year or so.
Edit: Nearly two years later and it’s still going strong. Massive thumbs up for that. Upgrading to 5/5.
Brilliant, pocketable little device allowing you to easily carry ‘everything’ with you. It seems to be well-made and robust but the drawbacks may outweigh the advantages for some people.
DRAWBACKS:
1. Transfer is MUCH slower than expected, regardless of temperature. Using the front USB3 port of my Windows 10 i7 PC, which has a very fast NVMe ‘C’ drive, it takes a disappointing 8 seconds to copy an album to/from the Sandisk compared with 5 seconds to/from my portable USB3 Transcend HDD. It only takes 11 seconds to/from a very old USB2 Buffalo HDD.
It would probably transfer faster via a rear USB port but I don’t understand why the Sandisk SSD is that slow compared with the Transcend. It is a bit tedious making large transfers, taking a whopping 60% longer than the Transcend HDD that I HAD hoped it would replace.
Copying to/from USB ‘C’ on my i5 Surface-Pro is a bit quicker BUT it takes a few seconds saying, ‘Preparing to transfer’ so a single album transfer is even slower.
2. It is so small that it is very easy to forget where I left it 😉
ADVANTAGES:
1. Small & easily pocketable – about the size of a Weetabix but half the thickness.
2. Robust – I think.
3. Fast enough – for most purposes.
4. Light – 58g.
A qualified recommendation!
UPDATE:
I have now found that transfer speed is MUCH faster if you use the very short cable that is provided with the device. Unfortunately it is difficult to use that with my set-up.
I still don’t know why the Transcend HDD is so much faster than the Sandisk SSD with a 1 metre, high quality cable. What is so special about the very short Sandisk cable?
What it does reveal is that there are genuine differences between digital cables. You often read claims that it is not worth buying expensive digital cables but in this instance there is a BIG difference. Is that purely to do with the length of the cable? I doubt it. Electrons travel along a 1m cable in an almost un-measurable time.
Although originally a sceptic, have long recognised that hifi interconnect and speaker cables really can make a difference to the sound. I am interested to learn that digital cables are also significantly different.
