The film reminded me of a spaghetti western set in WWII. Great to watch and though far fetched at times really enjoyable. Very violent but keeps you interested. This will become a cult film in years to come.
Was a good movie till towards the end when a woman called the men “bitches” Really? Set around world war 2 it was so out of place, even if the movie is meant to be tongue in cheek, edit it out!
Made in the mould of Quentin Tarantino movies. Really quite entertaining with bits of bodies flying all over the place. You cheer for the hero and boo at the baddies. Only worth watching once. A good two hours of mindless entertainment. Worth a look!
Not your typical WW2 storyline
Great cinematography,
Make sure you give it 15 minutes to get going as my partner wanted to switch it off initially but actually loved it.
Only reason for not giving 5 stars will become apparent (in a good way) when you watch it!
Great movie, lots of action, but subtitles were missing from the last 5 minutes, so unless you speak Finnish you have no idea what they are saying. Maybe it was just the version I watched. Be prepared to suspend disbelief, but it’s a compelling watch.
This film was well made actors first class and the action was brilliant and brutal great story line felt I had only been watching it for 20mins was glued to it from the moment Sisu bump into the Germans,
Top notch movie in English highly recommend it.
I wasn’t expecting too much but here is an original WW II action drama. OK it’s got nods to Tarantino perhaps but the landscape , photography and period detail make it visually memorable. The plot ? Well it’s about an old Finnish guy fighting the Nazis ! The film is so well done it should automatically suspend your disbelief in what you are seeing !
Based on a true story, this film is very graphic with in my opinion, far too much blood with some of the fight scenes beyond the impossible. A 50mm machine gun bullet would cut a man in two with ease yet our hero sustains several hits and survives.
If I had paid the full purchase price I would have been extremely annoyed, as it was, i opted to rent at the reduced Prime member rate.
Essentially a man mining for gold in Finland at the end of WWII strikes lucky but has the unenviable task of transporting it whilst Nazis haven’t fully withdrawn from the country. Cue action and mayhem – recommended.
If you like John Wick I think you’ll like this. There’s not much of a story line, as you’d expect, but the film is expertly delivered and doesn’t seem too short/long.
A really easy action film to watch, maybe without the kids! It has some ‘tasty’ combat scenes but this is reflected in its age rating.
Not so much a movie more a series of ultra violent vignettes . The story is well advertised – man finds gold and has to protect it from the Nazis. There is something very Tarantino about the flow of the movie including labeled chapters.
True movie buffs will be annoyed with the stereotyping of the Nazis in filthy uniforms and driving a Russian tank but the movie zips along so fast you forgive it.
As usual Blu Ray is the better option but remains a bit pricey . Probably worth it for a Friday night treat and a few beers. !
Be aware the film is much gentler than the trailer implies .. it is beautifully shot and yes it has more than its share of cartoon violence but don’t expect non stop violence … The ending got a bit too silly imo but it’s still a fun film and as they say what’s not to like about Nazis getting their come uppance ..
If Rambo, Commando and John Wick had a film baby this would be it.
It’s a modern version of all those utterly ridiculous action movies from the 80’s and 90’s and is as fun to watch as they were, maybe even more so. Most of the film is completely over the top action scenes and it’s glorious to watch. There’s a definite bad guy and there’s a definite good guy, very little subtext and an absolute extravaganza for the eyes. It’s just so very refreshing to have a film you can sit back and enjoy without the constant morals and politics being rammed down your throat like most films these days.
There’s really not much more to say about it than that. It’s an absolute blast to watch. Good old fashioned action movie mayhem at it’s very best. Highly recommended.
A magnificent WW2 homage to the SpaghettivWestern. If all ye want to do is sit back and watch Nazis die in horrendous and creative ways ,then this is the film for you. Loved i
A very different war movie, starts very well and the premise is good, but it does tend to drift towards Rambo territory in the back half of the movie. But it is gory and lots of fake blood and matter are thrown about with abandon. Overall an entertaining if not challenging watch.
Well, that was an interesting film, the protagonist was a man of few words and some of the action was so visceral that we had to turn away even though we knew it was pretend (field surgery was particularly gruesome). It is Comic Book action at it’s best with some truly graphic but oddly comedic deaths that made you want to wince and laugh at the same time. Some of the CGI was weak especially in the aircraft scenes but the reason that I could only give it 4 stars was a common bugbear of mine and perhaps it was a bit unfair to judge a comic book on this…… the wrong Tank. It is hard to get Nazi era Axis tanks and so a curvy Soviet Era T-55 was used and not (as sometimes is done in war movies) squared off to approximate the appropriate type but as it was such an integral part of the movie it kind of spoiled it for me. The US 2 ton truck was contemporaneous but again unlikely but the Citron truck was very possibly in German use so that gets a pass. Still it was an entertaining romp that I would recommend for a little mindless entertainment perhaps with a few beers and adult friends.
After a trend that sees most film being driven by Mary Sue characters a strong male lead is a very welcome change. OK some scenes stretch credulity but that is nothing new in cinema. Fun and gratuitous. Recommended.
I watched this film today to help me get through this period before major surgery tomorrow to save me from a deadly cancer that has no symptoms.
Not only is the film exceptional in so many ways that others have pointed out, but it appeared to me to be a story for so many of us. A person plans and toils for something into their future but suddenly things change. The man is like anybody going through the day job but with hope for a happy future. The Nazis are the ruthless indiscriminate killer of everything and anyone carrying out their orders of the scorched earth policy from Hitler.
The gold could depict that wealth wont save you, but of course here it is used to make the Nazis keep coming. If he had nothing the Nazis would have moved on, cancer doesn’t.
The man wants a peaceful and prosperous life after all his efforts. He gets it and he earned it.
A brutal film of hope against all the odds. Plus excitement, surprises and some good laughs.
What’s not to like?
It was a very easy to watch action movie. Pretty unrealistic so needs to be viewed from a totally entertainment value position. If you take it as it’s meant and not very seriously then it’s good to watch as you don’t have to think too hard. I ended up laughing at some of the action as it can’t be taken seriously and the bad guys get what they deserve. No need to engage the brain as the storyline is so simple, reminded me of some of the early 80s low budget action movies, but with more gore. The goodies win the baddies die.simple.
Fantastically shot against the landscape of a destructive retreating Nazi army laying waste to all Sisu walks you through a tale of pure revenge and the desperation of one man to salvage something from this hell he has tried so hard to escape from , very graphic in every violent detail with a real portrayal towards the horrors of war .
At the end of World War 2, a prospector finds gold in the Finnish wilderness and has to hide it from the Nazis. Fun very enjoyable action thriller from Finland with good brutal action scenes and good performances from the Finnish cast.
at 56yrs old, having watched the first top gun, commando, die hard , Rambo etc..I have to put a review on for this film..I loved this film 100% really enjoyed it and am well happy i actually bought it on DVD as i will watch this film again and again over the years..this guy in the movie makes all the 90’s/2000’s/2010’s etc mainstream hero’s seem lame..WELL RECOMMENDED movie to buy..hope Sisu2 will come out..i will deffo pre order i
Wow who’d have thought a dark, moody Finish/Nazi war movie could have you on the edge of your seat. Well it’s so good I have just watched it twice, back to back, just because i knew I would have missed something first time around, and I loved it just as much second time.
The landscape cinematography is stunning, and then there’s the blood, guts and gore ….. and there’s a ton of that! The main character is an ex-serviceman who’s turned his hand to gold mining and doesn’t like having that gold hoard taken from him, who would?
The Nazi’s soon learn that you shouldn’t mess with this lad!
It felt like a mix of John Wick and the Hateful Eight….. just brutal, but fantastic all the same.
Highly recommended.
Yes, it’s a bit far-fetched and a one-man-army movie but so are Nobody and John Wick. Like those and The Revenant it’s a movie about sheer will. It’s a wild romp and worth the time. Great acting from the leads, Jorma Tommila and Aksel Hennie. The pace winds up slowly at first but once it gets going the director, Jalmari Helander, keeps it going like a juggernaut.
Not much dialogue but it doesn’t really need it. It’ll leave you with a sense of what the word sisu means.
