This outputs 1080p 60hz signal from the Steam Deck to iPad Pro. I used the Orion app on iPad to receive the video signal from Steam Deck. There is more lag than using Steam Link over ethernet between the iPad and Steam Deck – but you are not stuck in the 1200 x 800 resolution, so it is much better for non-gaming use. There is not a lot of lag, it’s fine for stuff like Google Docs and watching videos. The adapter worked using both Steam OS and Windows on the Steam Deck, though fidelity and color are significantly better outputting from Steam OS. I used a Ugreen brand USB hub to patch power to the iPad – it only worked using a fast-charging adapter, when I used the usbc port from my computer it did not draw enough power. It also worked putting usbc directly into the iPad. I did not experience notable overheating from any of the Ugreen brand products or the iPad or Steam Deck. Definitely warm but under 35/40C.
As a technician I used it to connect my Android phone as monitor when clients NVR monitor died. Got me out of trouble and fixed the issue quickly. This device works as expected.
I decided to gamble on whether this would work with the new Orion HDMI monitor app on iPad OS 17. Yes, it works perfectly! The warning on the page is valid, yes, but only for iPad OS 16 and lower, there was no capture framework in the OS to use this device.
Just be sure to give permissions to the app to access “camera” (it’s considered a camera I guess) and audio.
Also tested on OBS studio, and of course it works fine there also.
Works great to turn your Android phone into a portable monitor for the field, but I have tried an hdmi to vga adapter and an hdmi to vga unidirectional cable and neither will get video to this device unfortunately. On Android, get the app “USB Camera Viewer”. It works really well with this adapter.
Would have been so amazing for field work on servers with no monitors if the VGA would work x.x
Update: I was going to return this but decided to try it as a cheap solution to making a streaming PC. So I plugged it to a Dell 3050 micro PC and installed OBS. It’s amazing. Works so good. I duplicated my monitor in Nvidia settings. But – I’m going to get an HDMI splitter instead as this will make controlling the audio levels way easier. OBS uses Intel quicksync to make use of the onboard graphics for encoding…so this solution is truly awesome.
For Windows 10, plug it in, plug in the source HDMI cable, wait for the operating system to jiggle around the drivers (less than one minute), open windows camera (if it’s a laptop or you have a web cam, use the select source button to choose the USB adapter) and voil the picture appears. If the source is dead you will get what looks like a test card screen with seven also coloured stripes.
For Windows 11, guess what, plug it in, plug in the source HDMI cable, wait for the operating system to jiggle around drivers, open windows camera, select the USB adapter and voil the picture appears.
My use case for the product, I work in information technology and have a need to carry around a server with me for demonstration purposes. I also carry a laptop. Having this adapter and HDMI cable save me having to carry a screen if I have to do any local terminal-based interaction with my server.
Plugged it into my phone and just like that I now have an external monitor for my camera. Plugged it into my PC and now I can capture 1080p footage in OBS. Lag is very minimal, far far far better than wifi or Bluetooth. Great product!
I wanted to use my Smartphone as an external monitor for capturing the POV of the camera to show how the Autofocus system worked.
My ELGATO CAMLINK 4K just keep crushing and using it with an adapter was to clubbersome.. soo.. i find out this UGREEN Capture Device, that didnt required and adapter to work with smartphones so i decided to give it a try.
Works really well. Doesnt get overheated in the sun, its just plug and play and has minimal latency and it didnt show any artifacts in the recordings.
Another great UGREEN product… im really a Fan of their Poweradapters and powerbanks, and this HDMI Capture device its as good as those.
