Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI mostly like the feel of this controller. It’s lightweight but feels robust, all of the buttons are high quality rubber domes with tight tactile feedback, and despite the decidedly retro form factor it’s comfortable to hold. What lets me down is the joystick.

I use an arcade stick for fighting games, and I think the joystick in this is *so close* to replicating that same feeling in a pad. I think the diagonals could stand to be a bit bigger, and the deadzone smaller. Someone could probably get used to this, though, and between the feedback and the square gate I would choose this 9 times out of 10 compared to a normal gamepad. I still have consistency issues with quarter circles and DP inputs, but how much of that is the controller versus my own unfamiliarity with pads for fighting games I can’t say.

Otherwise, it feels like a high quality controller for retro games, and I’m looking forward to using it more where it’s appropriate.

Okay, let me tell you about the 8bitdo NEOGEO wireless controller – it’s seriously top-notch! First off, the feel of this thing in your hands is like pure gaming heaven. The design is spot on, and the build quality? Super solid. It’s got this premium vibe without breaking the bank, which is huge.

The material they’ve used? So good! It’s like they nailed the perfect balance between durability and comfort. You know that feeling when you hold a controller and it just feels right? That’s what you get with the 8bitdo NEOGEO.

The fact that it’s wireless and works with both the Nintendo Switch and Windows? Game-changer! No more tangled wires, and switching between platforms is a breeze. The connectivity is rock-solid, and the buttons are super responsive. Playing on this controller is seriously smooth sailing.

And get this – the price? Surprisingly low compared to other big-name brands. You’re getting this high-quality controller that feels like it should cost way more, but it’s actually a steal. I mean, come on, quality like this at that price? It’s a no-brainer!

Whether you’re diving into some retro gaming on the Switch or kicking it on your Windows setup, this controller is a total win. It’s like they’ve packed all the good stuff into this sleek, affordable package. If you’re looking for a top-notch controller that won’t burn a hole in your pocket, this is the one, hands down.

It took a day or two to get used to the clicky thumbstick but it has grown on me and I very much like the way it plays on my original MVS/ AES.

Initially thumbs kind of slipped off but you have to position your thumb a certain way and it ends up being perfectly fine.

In game performance there is no better way to play metal slug games especially if you enjoy using the heavy guns. The 8 way directional stick is slick and precise!

Build quality is typical 8bitdo. Which is a plus usually. The thumbstick again is amazing. I can imagine using this for modern retro run and gun/ metroidvanias.

Someone mentioned it was too light. This isnt an arcade joystick. Its light but solid and its heavy enough for a retro pad and I even prefer modern analogue dual stick controllers to be lighter since weight contributes to gaming fatigue.

I could possibly see this not getting made much longer just because Neo Geo is very niche, which is a shame. So grab some while you can.

I’m someone who has never used the original version of this controller. I like fighting games only casually and I’m mostly using this with MAME arcade stuff that uses 4/8 way sticks originally. I’m also using it only wired to a Windows PC. No setup, no special overlays or software.
This thing is EXTREMELY unorthodox. Actuation distance is massive and things like spraying machine gun rounds in an arc in Metal Slug or a full half circle forward special move takes a lot more effort and intent than a DPAD.
I guess I hold controllers weirdly because I spent the first few days hitting nothing but diagonals. I almost thought about returning it, but decided to adapt my grip and pay more attention to my inputs. This had paid off and in the end I’m glad I didn’t miss out on this thing. Once you get used to it, it really does feel like a highly portable arcade stick. I’ll probably end up putting some kind of stickum on the stick itself since I still tend to slide a bit on it, but even that has gotten better with practice.
Over all, a very cool controller to have around.

Neogeo is my favorite arcade game company and 8Bitdo is my favorite controller company. So I was quite excited for this gamepad when it was announced. I have never actually laid hands on the original so I can only judge 8Bitdo’s version on its own and I like it a lot. It took some getting use to because the “D-pad” is essentially a joystick with micro switches. I got nervous when I touched it for the first time because the Xbox 360 D-pad is basically the same thing without micro switches and that one is horrible. But the Dogbone feels incredible. I played a lot of games with it like Mega Man, Kirby, Pokmon and of course Metal Slug and KOF. The only complaint I have is that the Stick is the only thing that has micro switches. The buttons are rubber contact pads like ever other controller on the market but they are huge and feel good. This is now my go to controller for anything retro. Well worth the money.

Really nice build quality that I’ve come to expect from 8Bitdo. Retains all the clicky goodness of the original with added features. Happy to have this for use on my MiSTer FPGA for playing NeoGeo cores.

I’m an unashamed retro gaming nerd. I still play the games I was first playing in the early 1980’s, across pretty much all of the mainstream consoles that I still own. I’ve got more than twenty game controllers in my home-office. But, and this is a big but, I’ve never owned any SNK Neo Geo gaming product. Not the AES cartridge bases system, the Neo Geo CD or the Neo Geo Mini that is currently available. As such, I’ve never used any of their game controllers. Yes, I’ve played many SNK arcade machines, but never used their home controllers so had no idea what I was missing out on. But that wasn’t an issue to me as I didn’t play Neo Geo games. That was until I discovered that I had access to the Amazon Gaming service via my Prime subscription, and on there are dozens of classic SNK games such as Metal Slug and King of Fighters.

Suddenly, I had justification for buying the 8BitDo Neo Geo Wireless Controller.

8BitDo are big name in retro gaming controllers. They’ve produced several big selling game pads for several systems, compatible with many formats such as Windows, Android and Nintendo Switch. The SN30 and Pro 2 that derive from the SNES and the M30 which is a SEGA Mega Drive / Saturn style controller are all well received controllers. I’ve got both the Pro 2 and the M30 for playing Nintendo and SEGA games. I’ve also recently bought their N64 controller wireless conversion kit that allowed me to take one of my original N64 controllers and make it compatible with my laptop. They’re a knowledgeable company and the Neo Geo controller had been greatly anticipated.

Compared to many of their other controllers, the Neo Geo pad is keenly priced. The RRP is 10 less than that of the Pro 2 for example. What you get for your money is the Neo Geo wireless gamepad, a USB-A to USB-C charging cable along with an adapter cable to convert the USB-A end to USB-C, a USB dongle that allows the controller to connect by 2.4g to your computer, and a simple instruction manual.

The controller is a simple 4-button layout, so traditional Neo Geo, Nintendo, Playstation, Xbox style. It could be used for SEGA Dreamcast and Master System, but not Mega Drive or Saturn games. 8BitDo have added two shoulder buttons that weren’t on the original Neo Geo CD controller that it’s based on.

The thumb controller is a rather unique D-pad that is almost like a mini joystick. It is so much better for typical arcade style games than the usually poor D-pad you get on Dual Shocks or most other controllers for that matter. This makes it perfect for fighting games as you can move the thumb controller smoothly to pull of special moves, something that can be difficult on modern joypads. Additionally, by pressing Select and either Left or Right on the thumb controller you can turn the D-pad into a left or right analogue stick. That was quite impressive.

Ergonomics wise, the pad is generally very comfortable. The right thumb and shoulder buttons sit nicely, and the D-pad is great in action. I did feel a bit of fatigue over time in my left thumb, something which does tend to happen with me and older game pads. Maybe I’m just old, or I’ve become so used to modern analogue controllers.

Pairing it with my laptop was easy. It connected by both Bluetooth and by 2.4g. You need the included dongle to connect by 2.4g, but it is the way I’d recommend connecting to a Windows computer. Although it connected by Bluetooth, Windows detected it as a 16 button controller and that caused a few calibration issues. With the 2.4g connection all of the SNK games I played were spot on.

As retro gaming controllers go, though, I think this is superb. For the right games this is an essential controller. It won’t suit every game, but certainly anything made by SNK is a match made in heaven. I have my own personal favourite controllers from all of the ones I own, and the 8BitDo Neo Geo wireless controller has joined that exclusive club.

4.0 out of 5 stars An almost perfect retro controller, offering something different to usual SEGA & Nintendo pads.

Sehr schn verarbeiteter Controller.

Got this for my SNK NEO GEO Mini as the official ones don’t have micro switches. Absolutely love this controller the 8 way directional movement is second to none. Bonus with the 8bitdo Retro PS adapter I can use this on my PS1 for metal slug X. Only gotcha for the Nintendo switch is you need to buy the 8bitdo USB Bluetooth adapter separately. Not an issue for me as I have one

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI was afraid I would need to configure tons of things like one typically has to do if not using a xbox360 controller, for PC gaming. However I just plugged the included dongle in and BAM off to the races.

There is no input lag, the clicks of the stick are amazing, the start and select buttons are plush, the L and R feel clicky and nice too like the Sega Saturn controller, it’s larger than the main body of the Dual Shock controller, and it’s easy to connect to modern SNK devices and your favorite emulators.

For $35 there is absolutely no downside to this bad boy, and I highly HIGHLY recommend it.

I think this might be one of the best controllers that I’ve ever used. I never had a Neo Geo but I do have a Neo Geo Pocket Color, so I’d tasted the beautiful precise clickyness of an SNK control stick and I knew I needed it when I eventually picked up the Neo Geo Mini. The official controller was much cheaper (especially secondhand) but unfortunately it’s really bad. The stick feels really loose and imprecise, the complete opposite of what you’re looking for. And the buttons are in the wrong places too. So ignore the official one and buy this instead, it’s brilliant.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis isn’t just a controller. This is preservation. I never had the chance to use the real thing, but all the reviews I’ve watched say it’s spot on, and if it is then I now know why everyone loves this thing. Is it the best for every game? Absolutely not. Is it the best for certain games? Absolutely yes. It’s also entirely unique, worth having as an oddity at the least and as a shmup destroyer at best. I’ve also had so much fun testing various games across generations with this thing now that its design is no longer locked to the obscure Neo Geo CD. This is the first time we can play NES Mario or Contra 3 on SNES with one of these. It’s truly sublime, and I hope to see more licensed replicas from 8bitdo, a company that has proven they truly GAF.

I recently bought a NeoGeo Mini and was looking for alternative ways of playing said apparatus when I came across this gem. As an older gamer, I cannot tell you how happy I was to learn this item has the old school micro-switches built into the joystick as it is not your general analog switch. This also adds an extra layer of precise-ness and tactile responses one would expect to accommodate such marvelous joystick innovations as such. The controller itself is very comfortable to grip, even for extended periods. The face buttons are large and clicky. There are the addition of 2 shoulder buttons on top, I’m sure to be able to use this on other systems. The plastic itself is of very good quality itself, there is a lot of integrity to this build and pretty faithful to the original controller(s). The battery life is very good so far, as I am now on Day 3 with the same charge it came out of the box with.
Nothing but praises for this controller as well as the avenue it helps open when I plug the NeoGeo Mini into the big screen and choose to play it that way. All in all a very good experience I cannot recommend enough to anybody looking to purchase one for themselves. Thank You.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAlthough I’m an SNK fan, I never got to actually try out the Neo Geo CD console or its controller as of the time of this review, so I can’t really make much of a comparison on how well this controller holds up to the original NGCD controller. But what I can definitely say is that this controller works very well! 🙂 The micro switch thumbstick is very responsive and has a very nice clicky feel to it, which I imagine is on-par with the original controller. The buttons are also very responsive and all work well. I don’t know how well it compares to the original pads, but from what I’ve seen, it’s pretty close, if not identical.

I’ve tried a couple of neo geo games on PC with the controller and they all work fantastic. I’ve also tried out some steam games with it and they worked pretty well too. 🙂 Obviously this controller won’t work well with certain games that require more than six buttons (considering the controller only has four face buttons and two shoulder buttons.) but I got this controller with the intention to use it more on neo geo games and games that use six buttons or less, so this is not a dealbreaker for me.

I’ve heard mixed opinions on the neo geo mini controllers that are replicas of the NGCD controller. As with the original pad, I’ve never got to use one of those as well, so I also cannot make any comparisons with those too, but if you were disappointed by how those versions were built, I think you will be very happy with this new controller as an upgrade to those mini pad controllers. 🙂 Especially since this controller can also be used on the neo geo mini itself! (I’m assuming it can be used on the Neo Geo Arcade Pad Pro as well, but I’d look this up just in case as I don’t own that console either.)

As of this review, the controller is advertised to work with Windows PC, Android devices, and Neo Geo Mini. From what I heard, a beta firmware was released that allows it to be used on the Nintendo Switch and Analogue Dock, but I’d advise you to google for more information on that department. Would be great for them to eventually release firmware updates to officially support those systems. Also heard the controller works great for the Mister.

Overall, this is a fantastic replica of the NGCD controller and definitely one I’d recommend for any SNK fans out there. 🙂 Although I’d recommend just getting the standard version of the controller as oppose to the special edition that have character sprites from the king of fighters games printed onto the controllers.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersMust have for playing NEOGEO games.
It has the proper clicky microswitch thump-stick.(it’s like a tiny arcade stick under the thumb pad).a unique feature from the original NEOGEO CD console’s pad from 90s.
the controllers feels very precise and satisfying to use and performing moves and combos are much easier.
I use it with my Mister FPGA system.
I highly recommend it for NEOGEO games if you want the authentic feel.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersA high-quality construction and great homage to the original. Having owned a couple NGCDs, I have a special place in my heart for their wonky little controller. I played many first rounds of fighting games over and over with the “click click” of the microswitched marvel singing me to my defeat once the NeoGeo Hard rounds started. And while this isn’t a 1:1 match, it sings in the same key.
The ‘click’ is more of a ‘clack,’ but a very pleasant clack it is. It almost has a bamboo windchime tone, versus the ‘pinging’ click of the original. The feel is wonderful. Pulling off a half circle is auditorily and tactilely satisfying. This is the mechanical keyboard of 6 button controllers. The buttons are pleasant plastic with good travel and decent response. The shoulder buttons, while apocryphal, are a very welcome addition, allowing this as an easy option for Genesis, SNES, GBA, and other 6 button offerings.

FPGA fans should rejoice given the recent news regarding cores coupled with this timely controller. Good stuff.

    Pros:
    Solid construction
    USB-C
    Tactile ‘clicky’ thumbstick
Quality of life improvements over the original

    Cons:
Not 100% analogous to the original (frankly, in a good way, but I can see this being a con to some)
