I love movies that are simply different and yet outstanding. This movie manages to tread new ground without missing a beat or going at all in the wrong direction. At this point its close to 20 years old but its still excellent and well worth your time.
Can’t understand why this isn’t available as a standard UK format,,so had to buy this German version with English dialogue. Still great film that gets better with each viewing .
I’ve watched this film a few times and it works cleverly on so many levels and in my top 10 films ever. Constantly kept me riveted and guessing till the end. Amazing editing
As Nolan films go, this is on point and for me, it was one of the easier to follow ones – inception took me a couple of tries before I fully immersed in his dream state reality. This one is a class performance from Guy Pearce with an accessible twist and is totally watchable, even if you’re not a Nolan fan, you may get under the skin of this offering. My husband gave up, I was in for the long haul and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Memento is a film unlike I’ve ever seen before. The editing is very unconventional but it pays off as it exemplifies the main characters confusion adding depth to the film. Aside from that it is a very slick revenge mystery which demands multiple viewings.
I like indie films that are a bit wierd. This is definitely a difficult film to get into but I found it intriguing. It begins with the end and works back, and forth, and back, and forth. But it’s well worth watching if you don’t like films that have lots of special effects and loud noises. Spoiler; there is a car chase (kind of) though. I suppose it’s the difference between hamburger and a filet steak with truffle butter. Chaqun son gout!
The film begins where it should end? and works it’s way backwards to the beginning. Work that out.
I am deliberately not telling much of the story here it really should be seen without prior knowledge for best effect. Suffice to say the film plays backwards in snapshots of time and is the story of a man (leonard) who can not make new memories. It is filmed from Leonards viewpoint I can only say go get a copy and enjoy.
Nothing is certain, nothing is clear. It is a highly entertaining brain teaser that will have you thinking and talking about the film long after the normal mementos (pun intended) of an excellent film have left your head.
Christopher Nolan’s breakthrough movie is a very clever, slick and highly original thriller which twists your sensibilities, emotions and expectations throughout.
The story is told in reverse, via flashbacks, from the viewpoint of a man who’s memory only lasts 24 hours, and who has to write notes to himself to remind him where he has been and what he has learned. I won’t spoil the plot, but merely knowing this premise gives you a good idea of just how fascinating this movie is.
In terms of the storyline itself, Christopher has a rich vein of concepts to work with here: the unreliability of memory; our subjective experience and how it creates our persona. In the process it poses some interesting existential questions, suggesting that in searching for a sense of purpose we all, in some way, create and live a lie of our own invention, to justify our existence and whitewash our crimes and misdemeanors.
However, given that this is also a revenge movie, this is also an edge of the seat thriller, with a unique suspense (how will he remember the next 24 hours?), and a genuinely innovative twisting plot unlike any other I’ve seen since that landmark British thriller from 1945, “Dead of Night”. It is also somewhat reminiscent of one of my favourite authors, Christopher Priest (his novel “The Affirmation” springs to mind here), whom Nolan has since either adapted directly (“The Prestige”) or taken inspiration from (“Inception” draws heavily on Priest’s “A Dream of Wessex”). But in terms of crafting a good thriller, Nolan clearly has the capability to be the director that M. Night Shymalan can only dream of aspiring to.
The production values too are strong, with excellent photography and editing, and a strong cast including then-Matrix stars, Joey Pantoliano and Carrie-Anne Moss. Supporting cast members are all strong and turn in first class performances, but unfortunately this only serves to highlight how lightweight Guy Pearce is as an actor. Sure, his performance is adequate, and in some ways his somewhat vacuous character rendition sits well with a character who wakes up every morning a veritable “blank page”. However, there’s a missed opportunity, as Guy seems more of a blank canvas for the plot, rather than a man tortured by his loss. I do wonder if Guy’s appearance is one of the few concessions Nolan made to commercialism. That said, his performance is inoffensive, if not exactly inspiring.
Later Nolan films of course showcase his talents more comprehensively and indeed, it is the subtlety of his work in other movies (his sublime subversion of the Batman franchise; the homage to Kubrick’s “2001” that finds a central place for love as a fifth fundamental force) which impresses. But this movie not only is a tour de force of his talent, but also bears repeated viewing, if only to untangle the plot twists. An outstanding movie that only just falls short of a perfect 5 stars, mainly for Guy’s bland acting.
My friend recommended this film to me. Probably one of the greatest film recommendations anyone has ever given me. This has opened up my eyes to how great films can really be, and I can’t believe I ever lived a life before watching this. I treasure her friendship and hope that the amazing film recommendations continue.
Although the jumping back and forth in time can be a bit disorientating at first, once you’re into the rhythm of this astonishing movie you will be hooked to every moment. A unique cinematic experience and arguably one of Nolan’s very best movies despite how many classics he has directed since this one.
This is innovative, re-watchable, thrilling, and thought-provoking. Quite simply one of the best films ever made in my view. The blu-ray transfer is flawless – crystal clear and detailed video and audio. The ultimate version of the ultimate film.
PS. I recommend not seeking out the version of the film that plays in chronological order – it is hugely detrimental to the film and will spoil the experience.
This is definitely a film where you need to pay attention if you don’t want to get lost! Very cleverly done, combining impressive visuals and tense action with a gripping plot, topped off with great performance from Guy Pearce.
Very clever film, leaves you talking about it afterwards trying to make sense of things. Requires concentration to watch in order to keep up with the time shifts and to fully appreciate the story unfolding. Definitely recommend it as a film to lose yourself in and really give you something to think about.
Wow! Stunning! Very clever, very absorbing – will sort out the genuine film lovers from the quick fix thrill seekers. Its only as the film unfolds that it makes sense – which seems obvious to say but, in this case, its absolutely true. I don’t think anyone who enjoys watching it will be satisfied with just the one viewing.
Watch it! It’s incredible and more intelligent than a boffin in a lab coat. I’ve watched this quite a few times, gave my original DVD away when I moved, and inevitably regretted it. Glad I’ve bought it again from Amazon. Watching it again reminded why it was so good. Right up there with ‘Fight Club”, “The usual Suspects” and “LA Confidential”.
On of the best movies of the past 20 years. This movie draws you in, chews you up and sits you out again. A story of a persons lust for revenge and will do almost anything for it.
The movie twists and turns back and forth leading you ever deeper in a story that unravels itself bit by bit, then your back to square one just as if you are the main character waking up with no memory of pervious events.
This is one of my favourites would highly recommend
Enjoyed it. Enough said. Would I have enjoyed the dvd as much? Probably. Blu ray is cheap though do guess it’s all down to whether or not you are like me and like expanding your blu ray collection.
Completely mind boggling. Nolan’s use of non-linear storytelling is superb, adding another layer onto an already compelling story. It presents us with different shades of the truth, leading us to an uneasy conclusion.
I haven’t watched all the special features yet, but the interview with Nolan was insightful, and I expect that the others will be equally good in adding to the whole experience.
For any Nolan fan this is a must buy. I wasn’t totally sold on the film the 1st time i read the plot but on reflection i could not have been more wrong. I highly recommend this movie to not only Nolan fans but fans of great films. You will defo be watching this more than once!
This is an incredible, original film and it looks superb in the blu-ray format. A genuinely innovative way of telling a fascinating story. Guy Pearce is spot-on and the twists in the story take your breath away. A real filmmaker’s film but accessible to anyone who likes action and to be immersed in a strange and dark world.
Only problem I had with this disc was that most of the special features wouldn’t work on my Panasonic DMPBD35 Bluray Player despite a firmware update – my guess is that this is an issue with the player rather than the disc.
This film was recommended to me by one of my students (thanks Jared) and I was hooked straight away.
It isn’t a film to watch if you are feeling drowsy, but if you are wide awake and sober you will find it exhilarating. It has a comic element as you get engrossed in the confusion of the protagonist, but it is basically tragic – like laughing at someone falling over.
I have now watched it three times and think I have mapped out the whole plot in my mind – this is a compliment, how great to find a film you can watch several times and still find things to exercise the mind.
If you like puzzles, detective stories, drama and something truly original, you’ll love it. I can’t recommend it enough.
