I got the PenPower scan pen for many reasons and it works great, and I have had no problems so far. It works great for studying or if you have a hard time seeing or reading this is the best tool to have. Easy to use and easy to carry around. I highly recommend this for anyone that has a hard time reading or studying.

Amazing product that is great for school and being able to copy from a book and paste onto your computer and save the time typing. Pretty accurate, easy to use

I was a bit skeptical that this pen would be able to capture written text with accuracy. To my shock it actually works surprisingly well. It was able to pick up every line I’ve thrown at it so far with 100% accuracy. The operation of the pen is fast and simple as well. There is no app involved, all the text for the web version of this pen is transferred to a web app (see description above for web site address). While its worked fine so far, I’d much rather see this not tied to one platform. I do believe there is another version which possibly eliminates the requirement for wifi connection and using the website. Satisfied so far.

I am a full-time college student and this is so nice to have!! There are so many things that I would rather listen to than read, and this makes that a lot easier. I am very impressed with how well it works too!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis item reads text in a variety of different languages and translates, too, line by line! I absolutely love this! It is very accurate in reading and has not messed up at all in the translation. The directions for usage is very clear and super easy to follow.
The only downfall– is that you need to connect it to the internet– so at home– you just enter your password for your wifi… but I really wanted to use this at school for my ESL students.. but connecting to the district internet was a pain– and blocked many features of the device. That was also the issue we ran into using it other than at home– if you have a hotspot on your phone– the connection was hit or miss… so using it at home is great– but using it in other places without wifi does not work as well.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’m actually stunned that this works and how well it works. It was pretty simple to setup and use. Its scans pretty accurately. Great for students and copying study material into notes.

We ordered this for a nearly blind family member for solely for the text-to-speech capabilities, and it works fantastic. Really amazing technology.
Simply scan the barcode, or manually browse to the internet address (I just created a link on phone and tablet), and go. The website reads things back nearly instantaneously (I anticipated a delay).
Really works great, and allows for more independence, which is greatly appreciated by the user.
This would make a fantastic and likely highly appreciated gift for anyone with major sight impairments.
    Highest recommendation!

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersMy daughter is learning Japanese in school – trying to read texts can be difficult because of the characters. It actually takes a lot of knowledge to even try to look one up in a Japanese dictionary. Being able to scan it to look up in an electronic dictionary is a great advantage. The scanner was able to copy Japanese text from books and had no problem recognizing it from right-to-left or top-to-bottom (though it outputs in right-to-left either way). It never missed a single character, got one wrong, or missed any punctuation, etc. It’s actually quite amazing how accurate it is. It’s very easy to scan with – you just push down, a light comes on, and you drag. When you lift it, it knows you’re done and sends the text.

Once the scanner is done is where you have a bit of a problem – the software, or more correctly the lack of software, is a bit of a pain. It uses a webapp for everything. In theory, that’s nice, since you can output it to anywhere – a phone, a tablet, a computer, etc – you don’t need to install proprietary software. The problem is, if they ever go out of business, you’re left with a paperweight. You also have to have an internet connection to use it, so that eliminates some of the useful scenarios.

The other problem with the webapp, besides being a webapp, is that it is clearly designed for people learning English as a second language. There are several language dictionaries installed, but they only work one way – English to other. However, the app lets you choose the other way. For example, I can set it to translate from Japanese to English, but when you input text, it doesn’t do anything – it just outputs the Japanese you put in. If this was being sold in China (which I’m sure it is), that’s fine. But if you’re going to sell it in the US, you should expect most of your users will being going from some language to English, not the other way around.

It does have a one-button copy feature, so I just copy the text and swap over to the Google translate app. It gets the job done, but it takes a couple of unnecessary steps.

The pen itself is well-built and has a very bright screen – so bright, in fact, I had to turn it down so my phone camera could scan the QR code to get to the webapp (it generates a unique URL for each pen). It would have been nice to include a case, though it does have a cap for the sensor end so at least the most sensitive parts are protected.

I really want to give this a 3.5 stars, but Amazon only let’s you do whole. Since it works amazingly well as a scanner, I guess I lean towards 4 stars. If the company goes out of business, though, it will quickly go to 0 stars. I’m not sure how different the standalone version is; if it’s as accurate as this one without the webapp weakness, it might be a better way to go. That said, this does work well out of the box, and again, I can’t overemphasize how great, fast, and accurate the scanning is. They really nailed that part.

Overall, it’s a neat pen that could be made a little better with some tweaks to the software, but works well enough as-is to recommend.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe hardware on this Pen Scanner is very well done. There is a little sliding piece to detect when it’s up against the page and that is well hidden and well constructed so it works reliably and smoothly. The light is good and the viewing window well framed such that I never had any problem targeting the pen or figuring out what line it was on. (I am using it to get notable quotes from books as I read.)

The way the software works you scan a QR code on the pen from your phone to open a web page and anything you scan shows up as text on that web page. Now, clearly, you will want to copy and paste the words off this web page into a document or note of some kind. Unfortunately every time you switch from the web page to your other app to paste text you will need to re-scan the QR code to establish the link with the web page again. I imagine this is because mobile devices save energy by suspending activity on web pages that are not the focus, but other web apps manage to maintain connectivity. HOWEVER, I am not removing a star because if you sign into the web app, it preserves text for you across sessions so you can use various workflows to gather a bunch of text before copy/paste. Still, it would be nice if the web page just held a session and I would recommend that to the developer 🙂

Well executed hardware, one small thing I wish the software did better, still 5/5
