This cage/L bracket designed for the Nikon Z8 is great if you want something that’s just small and lightweight, that still gives you a few extra mounting points on the camera plus an Arca Swiss compatible base.
The extra height the cage gives the camera actually makes it a lot more comfortable to hold, as it has a larger area to grip. It also protects the bottom and side of your camera. It gives you multiple mounting points on the bottom as well as a few 1/4 threads on the side for attaching monitors/accessories. Battery door is still accessible easily too. Also the small bit of extra weight from a cage helps to balance better when you use a larger lens.
All in all a great product! No complaints besides perhaps a wish for even more 1/4 threads on the side, but that’s the trade off going for an L bracket not a full cage.
Fits perfectly, seems to be quality construction. Has enough places to attach Peak Design anchors for strap-carrying, without having to worry about the Nikon strap lugs. Just what I needed for a great price!
This is my third Smallrig product this time for my Nikon Z8 and what a superb piece of kit, beautifully engineered to the very highest standards, this item just cannot be bettered. Buy with complete confidence!
The SMALLRIG L Bracket for Nikon Z8, is a must have making this ideal for Gimbal use.
For landscape photography with a tripod for landscape and portrait use of your Nikon Z8.
A well-conceived aid for my Nikon. Transition between vertical and horizontal shooting is swift. The battery compartment accessibility is thoughtful. No scratches, stays firm, testament to its craftsmanship. A fine tool for photographers.
This bracket fits the contours of the Z8 perfectly, it does make access to the side ports difficult but doesn’t completely block access to them.
They alert make a cage bracket for the Z8 plus battery grip which is the most stable L-Bracket I’ve ever owned.
Review of SMALLRIG Nikon Z 8 L-Bracket
Description
The L-bracket is a good fit on the Nikon Z 8, it is attached via a 1/4inch screw head rather than the more common Allen Key, a small screw driver gadget is provided for this. The plate has a pin for anti-twist and the fit is very secure with no movement. The portrait arm can be extended by loosening a screw using the same screw driver gadget. Battery door access is a little odd, you have to open a hinge on the L-bracket base plate. Portrait arm was flexible when the camera eyelet was in place, I found to get the portrait arm to be secure it was necessary to remove the camera eyelet so the arm was snug against camera otherwise it flexed.
What I liked:
1. At 126 grams it is lightweight for an L-bracket
2. Screwdriver and Allen Key provided
3. Secure no twist mount
4. Additional 1/4″-20 & 3/8″-16 threaded holes for attaching accessories
What I disliked
1. No means to store screw driver or Allen key in base of L-bracket
2. Vertical use is not as stable as landscape orientation
3. Battery access is a fiddle
In summary an L-Bracket is very useful for quickly switching from landscape to portrait mode on a tripod. I was able to test this on a Nikon Z 8 camera and it fitted well. There are a few niggles, no showstoppers so rated this overall at four stars.
This is pretty much the best thing ever for switching from landscape to portrait quickly and easily, perfect for my landscape photography and also the bracket as an array of mounts which makes using it for video easy too as you can attach lights and field monitors very easily, you can also change the battery without taking this l bracket off which is a great design feature in my opinion, for the price point it’s great value for money too.
Perfect fit for the Nikon Z8 camera. The priority is a secure fit and the ability to remove the battery while the L bracket is fitted and both of these are possible.
It’s an invaluable device for attaching peripherals on the side, or mounting the camera in an upright position.
Very sturdy IMO despite the cutout around thr battery it is a solid construction. No instructions but very self explanatory. There is a little pin that locks into the far side of the body so that no rotation of the l bracket on the body can ever occur. So far so good. Now to test in the wild. That reminds me…I need a new ball head.
WARNING – be cautious of buying anything from Amazon from independent sellers like Smallrig of Ubeter (for camera screen protectors).
Your account from Amazon shows a nil final payment (if you have enough Amazon credit) – but the Amazon price seems to be processed in full on your designated credit/debit card !!!!????
There are no instructions in the box, or full instructions that I can find on the Smallrigg website.
Not mentioned anywhere is that the L plate between the camera battery compartment and lens mount area is hinged – and has to be turned outward to allow fully opening of the camera battery door to change the battery. This in my view reduces the rigidity of the unit.
The left side of the L bracket in the closed position allows easy access to both USBc connections and the 10 pin connector – but not the video connection cover.
Not mentioned due to no instructions is the smaller screw on the base of the L bracket has to be screwed into a “mini tripod screw hole” on the Z8 base to be correctly fitted – IDEALLY BEFORE tightening the main L plate locking screw.
Having done this the smaller screw can be loosened to slide out the left hand side of the L bracket (from the back of the camera) to allow access for video cables.
There is an Allen key in the box and 2 small screws on the left hand side of the unit that allows the vertical section of the L bracket to be permanently removed. This would be convenient for video work with a camera in landscape position but again in my opinion slightly weakens the strength of the unit.
My score would go up to 5 with reasonable instructions in the box.
EDIT – there are now reasonable illustrations on the Amazon web site – my score goes up to 5 END OF EDIT
My unit was ordered on Friday evening and arrived Monday morning despite an initial delivery estimate of 8 days.
