Starfield – 25 years in the making – has arrived and, from day one (even until today) I am still hooked and playing after more than 1,000 hours. It is, in my humble opinion, everything that DESTINY should have been and more… More Planets. More Side Missions. More Fun. Exploration on Starfield is a must for anyone and everyone who is into Space and Adventure. With more than 1,000 Planets and Moons to explore and, of course, Interact with, there is always a surprise or two waiting. Best buy since Skyrim. And I would highly recommend it to any Console Gamer.
My background is probably worth mentioning, I am returning to console gaming after a break of more than 10 years. I kept things going on the iPad with WoT but prior to that I had a N64 and gamecube. Even further back I began gaming in the 1980s and I remember Elite with extreme fondness which is one of the reasons I decided to buy and XboX and this game. For younger readers, Elite is like the grandfather of Starfield with all the additional things that the programmers of Elite were not able to add (because of computing limitations at the time) being added to Starfield including being able to leave your ship and interact on each planet, etc. Note, space combat is almost identical to Elite.
In terms of the game itself, the start is very slow and in general when interacting with other characters there is a lot of waffle in the conversation. Also unlike when I used to buy games there is no instruction manual! I had no idea what a HUB is or even what LS was so I found myself looking online a lot. It took ages to figure out which button to press in which mode and when to dock a ship. You have to be careful when doing this to avoid spoilers. I’ve just been reading up about space bases and where to build them. All the stuff on surveying and what it all means. There are other things, often mundane, I still look up – how to use a grenade for example – it’s not obvious to me. Initially my main gripe is with one-to-one combat – there is no auto-aim so you need to somehow control two joysticks (yourself and your view) while pressing the firing button. Really difficult to do without getting shot yourself. You might say well in real life there is no auto-aim but in real life I don’t need to move a joystick to make my legs work. However, over time this became less of an issue. The main story line is great but the side quests particularly if you join the Crimson Fleet are awesome. There’s lots of decisions to make – to use force or social skills. The skill tree is huge and perhaps progression could be quicker but over time these add significant nuances to your abilities. I think I will be playing this game for a long long time.
Overall the game has huge scope and I will undoubtedly spend hours exploring it.
Very good game, but not quite as good as the advertising before release makes it sound. When you advance a bit in the game the story line and characters and game play improves in my opinion. Does have a few minor bugs currently but runs very well and graphics and gameplay is fantastic
Starts of a bit slow as you start to get use to the game but about a few hours in you get to explore, adventure, start interesting side quests, build your ship, see some really immersive sights and areas…etc. It looks great, plays smooth, has all the right ingeidents of RPG without become a chore or a bore. This is a huge game and with further Mods arriving – this a sort of game that can last for ever!
HINT: Sart to doing the main quest first for the first few hours then go tour own way!
This is an incredible game. Having bought the early edition I am probably somewhere around 10 hours in and know, can see, that I am just scratching the surface. Side quests are plentiful, space exploration etc is streamlined and i haven’t yet encountered a single bug (on Xbox Series X)
People who are Skyrim and Fallout fans will probably be surprised that things like ship warfare are actually fairly complicated, as are the skill tree choices, manufacturing and building outposts. Its the sort of game that will become second nature after a playthrough but notes might be your friend at the start! Be wary of cargo management and if you can, look to upgrade your ship relatively early as it’ll give more cargo space which quickly becomes limiting.
This feels like a game you could play a lot of times over.. dangerous but a worth skyrim successor in that respect!
Have fun.
