i just wanted a simple charger, what I got was a charger that gives the amount of charge in the battery and tells you when it is full. I have used it and can say that it works well.
I’ve literally only just received the product and have hooked it up- but a startlingly obvious flaw has already hit me in the face. Both ends of the unit have REALLY short wires. I’ve had to connect up an extension lead strewn across my garage and propped up against the car.
It seems to be filling the battery up – and the temperature detected is accurate so hopefully the winter mode will kick in with the low temperatures forecast.
The fan is not “quiet”. Luckily it’s in a garage
This charger has a “Repair” mode that seems to pulse it’s charge. I was sceptical, but gave it a try. It genuinely worked and restored a tired old Toyota Prius 2012 Absorbed Glass Mat battery to full life. 6 hours on the Repair cycle and 12 hours on the normal charge and the battery is working as well as it ever did. From completely flat to holding charge at a steady 12v. The small LED display is very clear and the instruction manual is too.
As another reviewer noted, the mains cable and the charge leads are quite short, but with a mains extension lead the charger can be placed close to the battery, so that doesn’t really matter.
As the headline says, this is super value for money and just works.
Although the charger is advertised as 6 Amp car charger, but the most I can pull out of this charger was around 5 Amp. Not off by a huge margin, I mean as long as it charges and shuts off when its full then I’m happy. It did that on the first AGM I tested. So that’s a pass.
Next, the real test: Reviving a Sulfated battery
The battery was around 3 years old, however it was never really taken care of because the owner mostly drove short distances. Not only that, it has to deal with a huge parasitic draw because of a constant live dash cam. About a weeks ago, after the owner came back from holiday, it was declared dead (by the battery tester). So I took this battery home and experiment with it.
When this charger enters Pulse mode, it sends full charging voltage for one second, wait for 1 seconds and repeats. In the instructions, it was recommended to repair a car battery for 8 hours. Maximum recommended repair time is 24 hours. Me? I left it for 48 hours =P
The reason I left it for so long is because I ask Google how long does it take for a trickle charger to desulfate a car battery. Google’s answer was 48 hours to weeks. Over the course of this 48 hours, I carried out Battery Test periodically (see the pictures). I did carry out more pulse charging afterwards, until I’m convinced that battery can no longer be further Desulfated. The end result is 750A on a 760 CCA AGM battery. Not Bad!
Between the wife and myself we have 3 cars, one which is just a basic backup car our main problem being that when we actually need to go and use it nine times out of ten we find the battery is dead as a dodo.
Now this isn’t so much of a problem with this little trickle charger, okay I have to take off the battery from the car and bring it inside and set it up and charge it but if I do it once a month then it normally keeps the car topped up if it isn’t used …. Then it will start when it’s needed which is the most important bit.
Being a smart charger basically you just hook it up and start off and it’ll pick the best charge needed for the battery. Another thing is it’s a nice compact unit, it’s all ABS stroke plastic construction but it’s not huge which means that it’s not particularly heavy and it seems to do the job that’s needed. There is a nice little LED display which tells you everything you need to know about the state of charge of the battery which is ideal.
I’m happy, the wife’s happy and we don’t get stuck with a car to use in the event of one having a problem!
Hope this helps …..
This unit is so compact and light, I’m seriously impressed with it! It’s very easy to use, you just connect, plug in, and you’re all set.
The quality of the build is very good, and I love that you can pack up and take around with you, it’s very portable. Charge wise it took just under four hours to fully charge my battery – which is faster than many, and for the price of this unit I think pretty good.
I did find that the power cable was a little too short as I don’t have an outside power source, so I have to use through a window into the house and connect to an extension lead, so that was slightly dissapointing (hence the 4 stars and not 5) but it’s the only flaw in an otherwise brilliant bit of kit.
The NetHong 12V 6A Car Battery Charger will charge normal 12V lead acid batteries, batteries used in start/stop vehicles and motorcycle batteries. It can also be used to partly regenerate sulphated batteries providing they aren’t too far gone to start with.
Selecting which battery type to charge, is achieved by simply pressing the mode button, a LED will illuminate next to the selected battery type.
When the charger is connected without mains power, it will display the battery voltage, once mains power is applied, it will also display charging current and ambient temperature.
For some unknown reason, the manufacturers of these types of chargers make both the mains leads and the output leads very short, I could possibly understand having short output leads, but a short mains lead is a problem. I had to use a small extension lead which would fit inside the engine compartment and also had to fit the charger in as well so that I could close the bonnet.
The charger appears to work quite well, it has increased the initial voltage from 12V to just over 13V, however I was using the pulse setting, because the car doesn’t get used that often now. I did switch the charging to normal mode just before disconnecting; from the current reading, I noticed that the battery required further charging, but it was getting late, so I will rely on the alternator to finish the task on the next journey.
Apart from the short leads, I like this charger, it has a fan to keep the internal components cool and it can adjust the charging parameters based on the outside temperature, it is also relatively small.
Update 30/6/23 – After using this charger on my car battery, the start/stop function has started working again.
This is must have item in the car. Material quality is decent, small and lightweight.
I like the battery and LCD display features. Match your battrey parameter before you use.
Super easy to use and It has useful multiple potection and faftey features
