It’s a very simple and basic introduction to the pokemon tcg. My daughter and I both wanted to try the game and we enjoyed it. We did come across a few situations while playing that the instructions didn’t talk about. That part was a little frustrating. Turns out Pokmon battle academny game explains those situations so we will try that next. But either way, we did have fun learning together.
I bought this for my 8 grade son who just started collecting Pokmon Cards. He loves playing and it’s super easy to learn. It even has some sneaky math skills your child will have to work with (hit points, damage points, etc.). It’s a great gift and I’ll be buying the other set as well.
Really loving the simplicity of this set. My 5 yr old loves “playing” pokmon, but until now, this has just been playing a single card and seeing who has the most damage.
I wanted to step it up to a version that introduces more strategy and resembles real game play, but at a level he could understand. This set is perfect. Plus it’s been great for me since I never played Pokmon cards as a kid so I’m also able to play with him.
Each round lasts about 10-20 min which is great for his attention span. The cards have less text making it easier for him as he’s developing his reading skills (see included pics comparing cards from this set with standard cards)
It’s not designed to incorporate any of his other Pokmon cards from his collection, but I think that’s a good thing bc he has so many powerful ones (EX, GX, Vmax, etc…) that it wouldn’t be balanced with this simple game play style. (FYI, I like that the back of the cards have different art from standard cards so they can’t get mixed up with his other cards).
I think this is a perfect game for young kids who love pokmon, but also for adults like me who aren’t looking to dive into the complexity of a true pokmon card game, yet still want to play a fun strategy battle game.
Got these each for our sons and nephews this past Christmas aged 5, 6, 9, 12. Was something that each age range was glad to get since they didn’t have any idea on how to actually play the card game battle style and have just collected the cards.
Recommend for any age even adults lol who want to learn how to play the pokemon card game.
Although my son watches & reads Pokmon books for kids, PLAYING Pokmon was a completely different story. This kit has everything you need to start a simple game and learn how the cards work. There are even instructional YouTube videos to get you started.
This is designed as a starter for a small child to learn how to play Pokmon the card game ( aka TCG). It is aimed at tiny children ( or those who can’t concentrate for long) as it has very few cards in, a tiny deck, unlike the 60 cards normally needed for each player, and you play for cardboard ‘ prize tokens’ rather than the usual prize cards. The game plays much faster than the full game, which is more appropriate for younger children. It is a standalone product, as it is not compatible with the rest of the Pokmon cards – they are a different size and have different backs. It is not aimed for serious players, and certainly not for those just collecting cards (a ‘battle box’ like Lucario Ex or Chien Pao Ex would be better for them ). It does however give a very simple introduction to the game – though for an older child the Pokmon Academy would be better (also sold on Amazon).
My 5 year old grandson struggles to concentrate, and this is great for him as he feels included, whilst the rest of the extended family play the full game. His 5 year old cousin finds this too basic, and prefers the full game, which just goes to show how different products are suitable for different children.
This is a great game for my 5 year old Pokmon lover, and easy enough for both him and me (who knows almost nothing about Pokmon) to figure out and enjoy!
My son is pokemon obsessed aslnd I really can’t understand the instructions on other games so to be able to play with my son I ordered this. I now understand the rules!! Its a hreat set with two mini decks the play mats x2 and gou get accessories with the set. Quality is good and robust enough for what it is. A great set to understand the rules as it also comes with a rule book that is so simple to understand. I would buy again.
I purchased this My First Battle set for my nine year old daughter. She loves Pokemon and has tried to play a normal full size deck (60 cards) with her dad but it’s a bit too much for her (too complicated and too long winded). This set however is the perfect simple introduction to the game and she really enjoys playing it.
In the box you get everything you need to play a two player game, which is:
Two playmats
A sheet of damage tokens
A rulebook
1 coin
6 prize tokens
2 mini decks
The rulebook is nicely set out and fully explanatory for a complete beginner. Right through from setting up your playmat/game, what you can do on your turn, evolving your pokemon, and playing trainer cards etc.
The decks consist of just seventeen cards each as opposed to the usual sixty cards of a full size deck. Each deck is built with 11 character cards, 4 energy cards and 2 trainer cards. The pokemon are basic and level 1 only, making it ideal for beginners.
The game itself is like a simplified, half size version of a regular game with a player only able to have 3 basic pokemon on their bench at any time and only needing 3 prize tokens to win instead of the usual 6. The playmats are laminated too which I like. They don’t fold flat when you first take them out of the box but if you just fold them back on themselves they soon flatten out.
All in all I think this is a fantastic little starter set for young fans to get a taste of playing an actual game without feeling overwhelmed by super powerful Pokemon and special moves. Being much simpler and shorter also means my daughter, who has autism and adhd and who struggles with her attention span, can actually enjoy and complete a game without losing focus midway through.
It’s a super little set.
I used to play Pokmon as a teen, but that was a long time ago and I’ve forgotten almost everything about it. My 5yo son has recently got into collecting the cards and watching the show, so I bought this so we could learn together. You get two small starter decks, a playmat, coin and some damage tokens.
All I can say is it’s worth every single penny. We had so much fun learning the game and we can’t wait to start building our own decks.
It comes with a really cute play mat so new players like me know where and how to position your cards when playing, I was a bit disappointed that the final evolution of bulbasaur (i also bought the charmander/squirtle set) is not included in the deck, but I’m happy nonetheless. The cards are super cute and I’m very happy with it as I grew up on gen 1.
