We had some early hiccups over delivery addresses and dates, SJRC and I, and it took nine weeks to get this computer delivered. That said, their customer service person Amy took ownership of the problem and was polite, amiable and effective and agreed a generous discount to recognise the delay. Once the computer arrived I was really glad that I had ordered it and decided it had been worth the wait. Incredibly compact, 14cm x 13cm by 4cm, lightning fast and totally silent (no fan) it is superbly competent and well built, it looks fantastic, with its heat dissipating very tech looking ribbed black aluminium body, almost a fashion statement. Well done SJRC, a great result.
This is proved to be quite a capable mini computer. What I’ve done is place this in a cupboard and then ran HDMI cables out to the TV so we can have a Windows 11 PC on a big screen. The graphics on this aren’t amazing for things like games, but it does do an amazing job as a basic PC for web browsing or video conferencing.
I love the design as it. Uses a lot of the surface area to displace the heat. Means that the fans don’t have to work too hard. The last mini PC that I had, the fans went in about six months of continuous use, whereas these seem to be much quieter because the fan isn’t spinning as hard. No issues as of yet.
This does have two outputs on the video, but be warned, one of them is a HDMI and one of them is a VGA. I’ve had to convert the VGA to HDMI with an adapter so I can get them both working at the same time.
One great addition on this is the external aerials that you get to pick up Wi-Fi. The other mini PC I have has a small internal aerials which makes it very hard to pick up the Wi-Fi signals from inside the cupboard. These external aerials provide a much stronger, more reliable Wi-Fi connection, to the point of where I can use it to monitor changes on websites and I just leave it turned on in the background 24/7
It might take a short while to figure out what need this computer fulfils. For eyesight I prefer to work on a full size Mac at my desk, but sometimes I feel imprisoned and feel like a change of scene. I also go away for work frequently and it isn’t practical to cart the Mac with me.
I have an iPad Air with a magic keyboard, which enables me to work on the sofa or on the bed, but my eyesight is not as good as it was and particularly for spreadsheets or reading detailed specifications I need to zoom in. This reduces the ability to reference the wider picture, literally.
I have got into a bad habit of sending and receiving emails on my phone (simply because it is always with me) but this is very bad for my eyes. I have a laptop that I take with me when staying at hotels (along with the iPad) but screen size remains a problem, and I have never adapted well to laptop keyboards and cart around a mouse and full-size keyboard.
For me, the SJRC fulfils a need when I am away and need to work on a full-size screen for the benefit of my eyesight, accuracy and speed. I can simply leave behind my heavier laptop (which does tend to require frequent recharging via a bulky fast charger) and use the SJRC mini PC along with a lightweight, portable full-size screen (which are very economical) along with a keyboard and mouse. This simply goes back to the days of yore when the computer was a separate unit, but with the benefit that large light, white, separate portable screens are now practical.
The mini PC is the size of a thick doorstep sandwich, not particularly heavy and made of what feels like heavy gauge durable aluminium. It has an industrial look and although it is not trying to win any beauty parade, the surface cooling fin design provides a pleasant aesthetic.
The product page provides a full rundown of the slots and cables, and in summary, it provides all that is required in terms of inputs, outputs and cables. Fanless (fin -based heatsinks), loaded with Windows 11 pro and a choice of RAM and flash drive storage. The model I reviewed has 8 GB of DDR RAM, a 256 gb SSD Flash, Intel Celeron J4125 CPU with a base frequency of 2 GHz and a burst frequency of 2.7 GHz integrated Intel graphics that will support 4K UHD and two screens. Choice of Wi-Fi or LAN connection.
This is plenty enough for my use and options range from lower RAM/SSD through 232 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. If you worked fine with a tablet or laptop, you probably won’t need this. I really benefit from the ability to use a large screen (preferably two) along with a full size keyboard (not supplied; I have already) and ergonomic mouse (ditto). This enables me to work, swiftly, comfortably, accurately, and without eyestrain.
For me, this has come along at the right time because I will be spending more time away on business and need to do detailed accurate work when I’m away. My laptop, iPad with Magic Keyboard and iPhone have their place but this piece of kit fits a niche that has for sometime been filled with a less than optimal solution.
In practice, it doesn’t require carting around a whole lot of bits spread all over the place, because one of my existing computer carrier bags easily accommodates the doorstep sandwich mini PC, two lightweight large screens, full-size keyboard, mouse and cables. Less than two minutes and I’m up and running
The mini PC comes with a durable UK plug (none of this makes shift converter type plug set up and a modest in line transformer. Note – mains powered but I wouldn’t use the set up in a situation where there was no mains electricity, and you could always use a power bank.
I have become accustomed to Mac for several years and it has taken me an hour or so to switch to Windows but it really isn’t an issue and I synchronise via Dropbox.
This presents as a well thought out piece of economical kit, with everything thought of, good quality, robust design, and no sense that quality has been compromised. Over time, I have tried various pieces of kit that are lightweight in design, construction and execution. The SJRC makes a refreshing change in the field where it is difficult to differentiate value for money and the specification I have found covers my needs and I find it rather delightful.
I think it is worth reflecting as to whether it fulfils a niche for you. I see people sitting at desks happily using laptops with limited screen size all day long. I far prefer a large screen (preferably two screen) environment with full size keyboard and mouse. To date I’ve had to compromise but no longer. Happy days, full marks. I am very pleasantly surprised. And surprised to be surprised because there is a lot on the market that doesn’t come anywhere meeting this level of utility, durability, whilst remaining economical
