As it turned out I should’ve ordered a smaller size, but contrary to other reviews, I had no problem splitting them down with a hammer and bolster.
I bought this tub to replace the small and inadequate rocks that came with a table top gas bbq. I was able to sort through the pieces and assemble a layer of thick enough rocks to entirely cover the lower mesh without chunks falling through. Some lumps needed to be split to be usable but, for the price, I’m quite happy with the result. The only downside is the rocks are so chunky that they actually impair heat flow, so things cook slower than you might expect. However the flavour from the fat in the rocks more than makes up for that. In the same situation I would buy these again.
