We wanted to make the kitchen a little more user-friendly when it came to night-time background lighting – and as a long-time user of Govee products from other LED strips to fully fledged lamps I couldn’t go elsewhere given their quality, the app for overall control and the ease of adding these as a routine in our Alexa devices.
Fitting them was a doddle – the adhesive backing works a treat, as well as the supplied fixings when it comes to creating corners etc – I had these under our kitchen units in minutes, set up on the Govee app even quicker, and added into Alexa all totaled in less than half hour. We set our routines as simple wake words (Kitchen and Kitchen Off to simply have them on and off as needed) to make use of a smarter home (even my wife who completely hates change loves the ease of use when entering rooms etc).
Also – and worth thinking about – is the Govee app lets you completely dial in the colour of your lighting to such a tweakable level that you can practically colour match these identically to any other lighting – I prefer all lighting to match as opposed to having differing shades all coalescing into a weird mess – that it makes absolute sense if you’re looking for LED lights anywhere in the home, don’t sleep on these.
First and foremost, the adhesion of these LED strip lights is exceptional. The high-quality adhesive backing ensures a secure grip on various surfaces, making the installation process smooth and worry-free.
Setting up the Govee Alexa Strip Lights was a breeze, thanks to the user-friendly design and the Govee Home app. The app offers straightforward instructions, allowing even those less familiar with smart devices to navigate through the installation process effortlessly. Connecting the LED strips to my Wi-Fi network was quick and hassle-free, and I appreciated the intuitive controls within the app for adjusting colors, brightness, and various lighting effects.
The highlight of the Govee Alexa LED Strip Lights is undoubtedly the seamless integration with Alexa. The voice control functionality works like a charm, allowing me to effortlessly command Alexa to change colors, adjust brightness, or turn the lights on and off. This hands-free convenience enhances the overall smart home experience and adds a touch of modernity to any living space.
The versatility of the Govee LED strips truly shines through with the myriad of colour options and dynamic lighting effects. Whether I’m looking to create a vibrant atmosphere for a party or a calm, ambient setting for relaxation, the Govee LED strips deliver on both fronts. The ability to customize and synchronise the lighting with music or set schedules adds an extra layer of personalisation.
In conclusion, the Govee Alexa LED Strip Lights are a fantastic addition to any smart home setup.
With their excellent adhesion, easy setup, and seamless Alexa integration, these LED strips offer a hassle-free and enjoyable way to enhance the ambiance of your living space.
If you’re in the market for smart, customisable lighting, the Govee Alexa LED Strip Lights are an excellent choice!
Only just received so l hope they are as good as most people say they are about the govee led strip lights. Mixed reviews on these ones better reviews on the waterproof govee ones so will compare once l receive my waterproof ones.
These LED strips are very easy to setup, and the remote control function via an app was very easy to setup as well. I had no problem sticking them to the back of my pc monitor. Would buy again, but be warned, their price on site goes up and down like a yo-yo, literally from day to day. Which is a bit of a ripoff, but hey ho.
Not very bright on max but provides a pleasant glow behind a computer monitor for eye strain free all day usage. Can be powered using a 5v-12v step-up USB cable if desired. WiFi+Bluetooth app control is excellent. Well worth the price.
Govee products are usually excellent and do exactly what they say they will do.
These lights are no exception to that, they are bright and work well with the app. They are easy to set up and the connection is stable. A lot of more expensive products could benefit from being as easy to connect and set up as these are!
The one niggle I have with Govee is their pricing. Its very flexible and they often put the prices up from day to day and then back down again. Its very noticeable if you use one of the price tracking extensions
Bought these in the hope they would be better than a previous purchase from a different supplier and manufacturer. Totally superior. Well made. Quality product that was really simple to install and configure with Alexa. There was also an alcohol wipe provided to clean the surface before fixing the light strip to the surface. Would recommend.
Very easy to use and comes with an attached controller to change colours and such! Unfortunately it doesn’t come with a remote control but you can download an App that works great which you can set up timers and other features.
We have connected it to our Alexa device which can be controlled via Voice.
I’ve tried a few different led tapes for various projects and nearly all have failed to impress. This kit does everything it promises to do , is easy to install and set up. The tape and power supply have a quality feel about them that most kits don’t have, the app is really good. Overall I would recommend this kit to anyone looking for colour change tape that’s Alexa compatible
Great product if your looking for cheap LEDs but app is weird don’t download it unless your trying to connecting it to Alexa, lots of colours and I particularly like the brightness setting
The Govee LED strip light is an excellent choice for anyone looking for an easy-to-install and versatile lighting solution. The installation process is quick and straightforward, taking only a few minutes to complete. The included adhesive tape makes it easy to attach the strip to any surface, and the ability to cut the strip to length makes it perfect for any space.
One of the standout features of the Govee LED strip light is the ability to control it using voice commands via Alexa. This makes it incredibly convenient to adjust the brightness, change the color, and turn the lights on and off without having to reach for a physical switch or app. The integration with Alexa is seamless and responsive, providing a smooth and effortless experience.
In conclusion, the Govee LED strip light is an excellent choice for anyone looking to add a versatile and convenient lighting solution to their home. The ease of installation and the ability to control the lights with Alexa make it a must-have for anyone looking to simplify their home lighting setup.
I chose these to add internal glass cabinet lighting so wanted to be able to run the led back and forth inside the cabinet for maximum illumination
A – Installation
I bought the recommended redtron installation kit which included corners splitter cable extension cable etc
The kit has lots of elements.
The best parts were the corners which I liked
To stick them to the cabinet I bought bostik double sided pads which were a good thinkness when used on the thin ribbon part of the corner rather than the connector plastic
The led strip itself is really good and sticky
Even when I had to peel off and reapply but was good.
They cut Easy with scissors
2. App and connection
Straight forward – good user interface and experience on the app
I followed the small included pamphlet and connected to my wifi and Alexa app.
What I liked was it auto reconnected even after i turned the power off
3. One negative – the led strip has specific places to cut it shown by the copper coloured RGB+ connections but! My strip had been made full
Length by soldering some lengths together
I could still cut at this point but the addition of the solder meant I couldn’t easily slip it into the connector.
So I carefully cut away from the centre of the solder joint so there was still a slope to allow the joint to slip inside the corner connector. Hope that makes some Sense
B – Appearance
Not as bright as I had hoped
Colours good and colour variation good too.
Warm white is a bit yellow and the cool white a little grey compared to some led lights I’ve had.
Overall good for my application.
The other colours nice and vivid
Red is a good deep red
Blue is nice dark blue
Purple is currently our favourite
C – Use
The controller is only three buttons so once you work out the on off button the rest is easy.
You can control the colours and brightness and set to respond to sound from the other two buttons.
The 3M sticky pad on the controller is 3M so it’s good!
The app and voice control works well.
I wound buy again but I would still look for better first
Enjoy
I ordered this item this morning and I’m here this evening to say how good it is.. I’ve purchased a few of these for different tv’s and this is the best set yet. I had to replace the lights I had on my main tv as they had given up working last night. It took me last night and this morning to finally choose a new set as the reviews are very conflicting. I decided to upgrade seeing as I was replacing and opted for ones with the usage of both an app and Alexa. Wasn’t looking forward to the installation as so many were saying how complicated linking these things were. But the total opposite was what I found after having these ones delivered today. Both setting up the Govee app and linking to Alexa’s app couldn’t have been more straight forward or quicker. I will admit though I already had the Alexa App as I have a couple of smart plugs. So adding the lights on was pretty straightforward. The lights themselves were very easy to put on the tv. The adhesion was very good and secureand found they fold very easily on the corners. I had to trim them slightly as I made sure I had ample to put right round the tv. It was very simple to do as long as you cut where indicated. I’m not sure how bright people expect them to be but for ambient lighting they are plenty bright for me. They light up most of my wall @ 60% brightness as seen in the added pic. The photo I’ve included is of a large wall, that is a 65inch tv. So if your looking for tv lights or for room surround or wherever, these are definitely a really good choice. The app is easy to negotiate. The hardest thing in all this is choosing a name for my tv for Alexa to interact with lol.
LED Review
This review applies to the Govee 5-metre RGB (multi-coloured) LED strip with Alexa/Google home capability, plus remote control via the Govee Home app.
In the box you’ll find 1 x 5mtr rolled LED strip, 1 x white power supply, 1 x white LED controller with 1 x Strip connector, along with basic Installation Instructions. Everything looks to be of good quality. This kit Does Not include a handheld remote control — everything is done through the Govee App.
This set has been installed in a converted loft which my son uses as his bedroom. I had already worked out where the strips were going to be located and installed a dedicated 13amp socket close by. The power supply has an approx. 100cm lead and the LED controller an approx. 50cm lead. So, you need to ensure you have a 13amp socket within 150cm of where you want to locate the start of the strip.
As I needed to split the LED strip into two separate strips, I also used a splitter (purchased from Amazon) to connect the two strips to one controller.
The LED strip is quite thin, so needs to be handled carefully — this isn’t a negative statement, just an observation.
Installation was quite straightforward. After rolling out the strip and cutting to length, I began sticking it down, starting from the end closest to the power supply. I found it best to reveal approx. 2 inches of sticky tape at a time and use a single finger to carefully apply pressure to the strip, avoiding the electrical components. The adhesive felt strong to the touch and has bonded with the painted wooden beam very well. It’s imperative that the area has been cleaned and prepared prior to sticking (I used strong alcohol wipes and a soft cloth to remove any excess moisture.
Once installed I then connected the strip to the controller. I found the weight of the connector was enough to slowly start pulling the strip away from the beam. Therefore, I used some double-sided tape to also stick the connector to the beam.
When you turn everything on for first time, the LED strip flashes through several colours. There is also a button on the controller that lets you scroll through the main RGB colours.
To get full control of the LED stripes, you need to download the Govee Home app from the appropriate app store. The app requires you to create an account and needs location permissions to work. Once registered, you then connect to the LED controller. This can be done by either WiFi (2.4g only though – there is no 5g WiFi connectivity) or Bluetooth. The instruction booklet gives clear instructions on how to connect. For some reason you get a wider range of controllers & effects when connected via Bluetooth.
I was very surprised at the Govee app’s comprehensive functionality. As well at the obvious single colour & brightness options, there is also a full spectrum colour wheel. Unfortunately, dragging your finger around the colour wheel doesn’t automatically change the LED colours. You can only tap on the colour you want & then the LED’s will change. The app has a vast range of different ‘scenes’ that you can choose. You can also choose scenes with an accompanying soundtrack eg. Thunderstorm, running water, campfire, etc. The ‘Rainbow’ scene was used for the video demo.
Overall, I am very impressed with the whole kit — very straight forward to install with plug & play simplicity. It would’ve been nice to include a handheld remote control, but the impressive functionality of the app easily makes up for this small omission.
For a stress free and successful installation, I’d definitely recommend planning things out before hand, make sure you got access to a 13amp socket, clean the surfaces thoroughly and just take your time when sticking down the strip.
I had to reduce the LED brightness down to around 40% for my photo’s. Any higher and the brightness was too overpowering for the camera.
Update 25/10/21: I have installed a second set in the same room. Using the ‘Same Device’ option in the ‘Smarts’ section of the Govee app I was able to sync & link both controllers so they work in tandem. The short video demonstrates the ‘Rainbow’ & ‘Fire’ scenes from within the app.
I also managed to connect both controllers to Alexa. Once both controllers were added to the same group, they would both respond at the same time to the usual voice commands. However, I did find that you could only select single colours via alexa. There is no facility to activate multicolour sequences in the same way as the ‘scenes’ section of the Govee app.
EDIT: After owning and using these lights for about a month I’ve discovered a flaw that’s annoying enough to report. I’ve found they sometimes lose the connection to Alexa. They are still connected to the wifi, and can be turned controlled by the app, but Alexa only reports an error. Nothing I’ve tried seems to reconnect them, but after a couple of days they mysteriously submit once more to Alexa control. Very irritating, and disappointing.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: Recently started buying LED strips as ‘mood lighting’ and my home. When scanned on Amazon, they all look much the same, apart from the length and price. But I’ve learned that they’re not. These Govee strips are very good. They’re bright, deep in colour, respond quickly and reliably to changes made on the app. (or to Smart Assistant voice control, or to sounds picked up on the mic in Music Mode), and the app. is well designed. The cable length between the connector the strip and the mains plug (with the controller and mic in the middle) is generous – somewhere around 2 metre. Cheaper ones, I have found, do not match these requirements. So if you’re wondering, “Is it worth paying a bit extra”, I’d say the answer is ‘Yes!’.
The only very small complaint is that the options on the app. are so extensive that they really need some sort of proper manual, either as a Help section on the app, or online. Still can’t work out how to create my own combination of Scene and Colours.
The light strips themselves are fantastic value! They also come with a WiFi controller which also doubles up with a manual power button in the line (take that Philips)!
Not only that but as they are fairly basic RGB light strips you can purchase any led strip connectors to customise these as you need. The light quality is also really good and their app has a plethora of different effects you can get the strips to do (Philips has lighting effects in its beta labs section, and has done for a long time… That section also SUCKS).
However it’s integrations are basic and there’s some notable delay between sending a command and the strip performing it.
Integration wise you have Alexa and Google home, but anything else is just not easily possible at the moment. You can use home assistant but you have to use HACS first and then you’re limited by the govee API limits which is actually pretty small at 60 per account per min and works on a polling basis. If you have just 5 strips then you’re limited to either using separate govee accounts, or polling their api every 5 seconds! If you need an instant response from these strips, these may disappoint. But as ambient lighting where response time isn’t as critical, these are great!
There is an alternative though… You could get the cheaper Bluetooth govee strips and replace the controller with a shelly rgb2 device. This will be a little more expensive overall and requires a basic amount of wiring, but remains much cheaper than Philips or lifx and shelly offers a much greater level of integratio
I bought the 10M version for my daughter for around her bedroom for Christmas and the 5M version for myself as a back light around the back of my TV.
The Good….
The strips look brilliant, my daughter was particularly happy with hers, and I think the ones around the back of my tv are superb, it almost makes the TV look completely different.
The Remote which is actually attached does a suitable job however as I am sure most people who get these do i have attached both sets to the Govee app and linked with Alexa which seems to work seamlessly
The Bad….
Although there have been no problems with my 5M strip My daughters 10M strip has had sections of the LED’s fail where the strip was only able to display Red. READ ON!!
The exceptional…..
I’m Going to name drop here now ….SARAH…. from Govee support deserves a medal and Govee customer support deserves commendation.
After my daughters failed I sent photos of the failed areas to Amazon and Govee direct (on a Saturday night) on Monday Sarah contacted me saying they stand by their product are concerned i’ve had a problem could i send her the Amazon order number and she would sort out a replacement, which I did. Sarah then followed up by informing me when they shipped the replacement, the next day, and again at the end of the week to confirm I had received them and was happy.
What Support – I think a lot of companies could learn from this the only time i have received such support was from the giants Microsoft and Logitech.
I would recommend these without hesitation.
Craig
I’ve always wanted to install Hue LED strips in my kitchen and under my bed to control with Alexa, but the cost was too pricey to justify it. My whole house is decked with Philips Hue lights with the exception of the kitchen spots, so my trust is with Hue. I knew that a cheaper LED strip alternative would come on the market but I’m always highly reluctant to purchasing anything but Hue due to complex setup procedures and products that just don’t work.
Even though, it does suggest that you don’t plug in the strip whilst it’s on the roll, I wasn’t going to unravel it all to find that it might potentially not work, so tried it on the spool, plugging it in and it lit bright. I installed on the underside of my bed within 15 minutes. The backing peels off easy and the adhesive holds really well. If you misplace the strip however, it’s easy enough to remove and reposition.
Installation
To install, you download the Govee app, select the product or scan for nearby Bluetooth devices. I done the latter. It picked the strip up straight away and the strip blinked to confirm connection. You can then name the device. This is what you’ll call out to using Alexa. If you want to run via Alexa, you download the Govee skill from the alexa app and you’re good to go.
The build quality of great in the strip, wire and connected 3 button switch panel. You are able to cycle through colours using one button, another turns on music mode in which the lights react to sound and there’s a power button. All functions including custom colours and even scenes can be controlled from the Govee app. I really like the control on the wire since it’s a lot more authentic than the mass produced remote controls that come supplied with many LED products.
For only 2 metres, Philips Hue LED strips (Alexa controlled) are 69.00 at time of writing and these Govee LED strips were a mere 23.99 for 5 metres! I’ve managed to line the entire underside of my bed for 23.99 in contrast to the 138 it would have cost me to do the same with Philips Hue strips!
The command differs slightly from Hue. You have to say ‘Alexa, set the [name] to Blue’, rather than ‘Alexa [name] blue’ as an example. i.e ‘set the’ seems to be a requisite. It works flawlessly!
After realizing these are such good quality and actually work seamlessly with Alexa, I immediately ordered another one for the underside of my kitchen cabinets.
Save a small fortune and buy these!
I looked at lots of different LED lights before settling on these. They were not the cheapest by any means but I think you get what you pay for and these are well worth the money. The packaging is excellent they look and feel like a quality product when you open them. I used these lights to go on the back of my sons 32 inch TV. You can see in the picture that I used the entire 5m strip by looping around from the outside to the centre of the back of the TV. It took me about 5 minutes to apply the product.
The corners can be a little tricky initially but once you have done one it becomes second nature and you start whizzing around the TV. Once everything was applied I connected the power and put the TV into position. I used the adhesive on the back of the remote to hide that on the side of the chest of drawers that this TV sits on. It’s within reach if needed but out of sight as well. Then I downloaded the app and it took a few minutes to set up the lights and connect them to the wifi network. It was really easy to do. Then we tried out the lights and they were fantastic. Super bright! Lots of different colours, and I mean lots. You can use a colour wheel to make almost any colour you can think of.
Finally I hooked them up to Alexa which was a fairly quick process. Once I had done that my son was able to control the lights with his voice. It works really well. Just to take it a step further, I also connected his Xbox to Alexa and then I created a routine. Now, when my son says “Alexa, it’s game time” the Xbox turns on and the LED lights illuminate at the same time to a colour of his choice. It works really well and looks impressive when you do it. When he is done he says “Alexa, game over” and it turns of the lights and the Xbox together. Very cool.
The quality of the lights and the brightness is great. These pictures do not do it justice at all. They were taken in a room with no other lights turned on at all. They are super bright. I’m really happy with them and I will be buying some for our downstairs TV in the near future.
This strip light is very easy to set up. It only took around 10-15 minutes to stick the light strip into position, connect to the Govee app on my phone and start using it. You can cut the tape to the required length if you need less than your purchased length, providing you cut along the marked areas on the tape. The app is very intuitive and useful for changing modes, such as static colours, music mode or one of the preset sequences. The remote is good, but I’ve linked the light to Alexa for voice commands which is a far greater experience, or I use the app. The light is in my son’s bedroom and I’ve set up a couple of routines in the Alexa app, which work seamlessly. One to auto switch his light, TV and Xbox on, and another to play music and the lights on for party mode with the light flashing various colours. He absolutely loves it, and I’m more than impressed with the light myself.
The only negatives I’ve discovered are that the colours arent necessarily true to form. Orange is more yellow. Yellow is more warm white. Other than those little things that don’t matter a great deal to me anyway, it’s a fantastic bit of kit for the price. Highly recommended if those small issues don’t bother you. My wife wants another for elsewhere in the house now.
*EDIT*
The light failed across across a few LED’s recently, as they weren’t emitting the correct colour tone to match the rest of the strip. I used the in-app feature of reporting a problem and received an email from Govee the following day to arrange a replacement light strip, free of charge. Customer service was excellent; in fact, probably the most proactive CS I’ve ever received from any company after sales. They even checked back with me to ensure I was happy with the replacement once it arrived a couple of days later. I’d 100% recommend Govee and their light strips
Just installed these on a 60″ TV. The 5m strip still left me with spares at the end, which is helpful if you need to make cuts and remove sections to get corners in the right place etc. When you do these be really careful to plan the pattern first. It’s really easy to start sticking down a strip and then realise that you’ll have to go around a power cable on the back of your TV etc and it would have been better to move them down an inch 😉
I’ve done a few sets of LED strips and these feel like good quality with decent adhesive. The mains plug adaptor is fairly compact and the switch unit on the back of the TV is neat and fits tidily away with its own adhesive. I opted to use additional L-shaped corner pieces for this install (sold separately) which I think are totally worth the extra time for a more professional finish.
All the LEDs lit perfectly, and the app picked them up first time and easily integrated with Alexa after installing the Govee Home Skill.
The app itself works perfectly, both over bluetooth and WiFi offering a bunch of functionality, but in my case i’m using Alexa routines to control these lights. Alexa works well, the lights respond quite quickly and in routines you can select power on/off, brightness and the normal range of colours (see note further on).
The brightness is excellent. At night I found that 65% was more that bright enough.
My only slight niggle is that the colours don’t match up well with some Philips Hue bulbs in the room. Thats obviously not the fault of this product but be aware if thats important to you. Selecting ‘warm white’ on both these leds and the Hue lamps produces quite different results, although standard colours like red, blue, green obviously match perfectly.
These seem good quality, good adhesive (which is important!), work with Alexa, have a good app and offer great brightness. Pretty amazing price too. Totally recommended.
I ordered these LED strip lights to fit around the back of my TV and my desk. They arrived quickly and were simple to install. They stick really well onto both the plastic and the IKEA desk top material. They haven’t moved since I fitted them. Setting them up with Alexa was also simple and painless by following the included instructions. I can now simply walk into my study and say “Alexa switch on the lights” and they ping on. You can also ask Alexa to change the brightness, change the colour etc. I tested these scenarios and everything worked perfectly.
After about a month, I noticed one of the LED’s started to have a problem. It wouldn’t display white like the rest of the LED’s on the strip. I contacted Govee Support by using the contact us option inside the Govee phone app itself and within minutes I received a reply asking for further information and a photo of the issue. I supplied this and Govee agreed to send me out an entire replacement set. This set arrived within days and I got that set up (again without any issues at all). My TV/Desk LED’s are now working perfectly again. A big Thank You from me to Govee Support. It’s very rare to find customer support as good as this nowadays. I would sincerely recommend these LED strip lights. They are brilliant and excellent value for money. I’ll be buying more in near future to fit around other areas in my home.
I’ve had a few different strip lights over the past. Originally about 4-5 years ago I bought a non WiFi set which i used around my tv. Although they worked well you can see with this Govee set how far they have come in quality. They are well made everything is sealed and the clips securely hold the lights to the power pack and WiFi module
The package comes with a CE certified plug which was important for me as they are going in my daughters bedroom under her Highbed. A lot of the cheaper alternatives I’ve had in the past don’t and I have had to spend more out for a UK plug to replace them.
Using them they were easy to connect plugging the WiFi module to the plug then to the lights.
I tested them by pushing the button which changes the colour and also the mode from flashing to still with a few variations in between. All easy to do and use.
It took a few minutes to set up with the ap and Alexa together. If you set up something with Alexa before it’s the usual process and nothing is harder or easier. Alexa worked well with them as shown in the video.
Overall they work really well. And are of super quality. Im looking for lights for other areas in my house will will stick with these and purchase a few more sets now I know they are a good alternative to hue.
I’ve put up some test pictures for now and will update a further picture once installed in the bedroom.
