I use this for my sunflower seeds and my birds love it. The blue cap and plate are bright blue and the metal is substantial, not flimsy. It holds a good amount of sunflower seeds, so I don’t have to be filling it every other day. My finches and Cardinals especially love this and the squirrels don’t seem to care to even try and get the sunflower seeds out so that’s a nice detail. This would make a great gift for the bird lover in your life. It is well-made end of very good quality.
It’s a nice looking feeder and generally easy to fill. The birds accepted it quickly. I continue to have trouble ensuring the lid is tight. The tabs slide into their places just fine but it’s a bit loose and wiggly. About a week after I got it a friendly raccoon was able to jostle it enough to separate the lid from the seed holder and knock it down. It hasn’t fallen apart in the wind though — and it’s been very windy lately.
This bird feeder is a well made feeder. I use sunflower seeds in it and the birds love it. It is very easy to clean since the top and bottom are removable.
This feeder will serve its purpose. I expected something a little larger (I should have read more closely) and sturdier. I just put it up, so I’ll see if it holds up to much use. It does seem to be easy to clean–all parts can be easily detached from each other for a thorough scrub.
The birds really love the feeder – so do the squirrels. It only took 2 days to find the feeder, jump on it & knock the seeds to the ground and have a feast.
I LIKE THIS FEEDER VERY MUCH. THE BIRDS DO TOO! IT IS EASY TO OPEN TOP OR BOTTOM, AND THE FIRST DAY I HUNG IT OUT, THE BIRDS, ESPECIALLY FINCHES, SWARMED IT.
Good heavyweight feeders – I ordered two – easy to fill – easy to clean. I like the seed saving saucer which the sparrows perch on. The others – blue tits, goldfinches, coal tits, great tits, my two woodpecker families – all hang happily from the mesh whilst extracting the sunflower hearts.
None have a problem taking any – I can assure you – none of my visitors are starving. The feeders – even these larger ones – are empty at dusk.
A really good buy – I shall be ordering more.
Burd feeders are meant to be left outdoors year-round, exposed to the elements. the previous design of the mesh cylinder included a light metal bottom, which ultimately rusted through. This new design is much better, as the seed collection saucer at the bottom protrudes into the mesh cylinder forming a much sturdier base.
If you are planning to use thistle or Nyjer for finches, be careful not to order the company’s look-alike model that has mesh openings too large for thistle. The correct model states “Finch Bird Feeder for Nyjer/Thistle Seed”.
The critters seem to be able to unlatch the body from the top (leaving the top hanging). The body then drops to the ground where they can feed at will.
I love feeding birds and I’m always adding feeders, I wanted another sunflower seed feeder with a “catch plate” so not too many seeds are wasted. This design is well made and does the trick. It’s ok to have a few seeds fall on the ground as the doves appreciate it.
This is a great feeder, but unfortunately, my squirrels and raccoons have taken the bottom piece off, causing all the sunflower seed to fall to the ground and the whole bottom piece. I’ve secured the bottom by hammering the lips together so it doesn’t unscrew easily from the bottom. Other than that, it’s a great feeder !
I bought this feeder to add to the 6 or so that I already have set up for my finches (goldfinch and house finch). I use sunflower hearts, ground up. They absolutely LOVE this feeder because they can easily hang upside down (goldfinch favorite position), can get the seed pieces out easy, and the spillage goes into the wide tray for the fledglings and girls. It even gets more attention than their usual favorite yellow feeders! Great buy! Very happy!
