I’ve been using this as a low-powered alternative to my old desktop or Nvidia Shield as a Plex Media Server, and frankly, this does the job just fine. I added a 2TB SATA SSD to it to store all of the Plex data and a powered USB3.0 hub to run a bunch of external drives for media content. Plex runs very smoothly, it can even create a large number of thumbnail preview images in short order, and I can’t say I’ve had any real issues. The device even handles my rather large photo library very well.
It can even transcode some 4K videos (3840 x 2160 @ 30FPS, struggles with 60FPS at that resolution, and any framerate at higher resolutions) although that’s not a major consideration as most devices will playback 3840 x 2160 @ 30FPS natively these days.
The device does get rather toasty, however, so I’m using a USB powered cooling fan to help with heat dissipation. Don’t want to toast that SSD!
I don’t normally bother writing reviews, but decided this might help somebody with same views I had. I was sceptical about buying this pc because of its size (never had mini pc before), when it arrived it made me even more nervous because it was so small. Anyway I decided to bite the bullet and give a go (so glad I did). This is a wonderful little pc that has plenty of power and speed, set up was super simple and Windows 11 pro updated itself no problems at all. I mainly use for laser and 3d design and printing in Lightburn and FreeCad (lots of graphics, some big files), its copes admirably and connected to a 32″ monitor life is so much easier. Really glad I took the chance and fully recommend, will not be going back to large bulky tower pc’s again. PS I did buy a powered usb hub to increase number of available ports (4 wasn’t enough for me, with machines, cameras etc. attached)
This works perfectly, works great with my two screen set up and takes up no space. Functions really well for work purposes and takes up almost no space. Great purchase and super convenie
Wanted a mini pc to hook up to my TV to use rather than the smart tv software, it mostly get’s used for YouTube and does this well for the most part. The problem though is it it just slightly underpowered and can suffer when viewing a 4k video (many people produce 4k video even if it’s just them sat talking to a camera). If you full screen the video it usually plays just fine and only occasionally gets stuck, but when you first open the video and it auto plays, the video playback lags and eventually gets stuck on an endless buffer so I’m constantly having to fullscreen and rewind to start the video.
To be fair It’s ok for the price, but if you’re looking for something to hookup to a 4k tv and browse video’s a lot, then perhaps go for something with a bit more power.
The specs on this device are excellent for the price. If you are somebody looking for a pc to do small to medium price which is small and cheap this is the perfect item. My only complaint would be that the processor isn’t very good and is slow. This however I had expected for the price and type of processor that it is and it is perfect for what I wanted to use it for. I wouldn’t recommend this item for anybody who plans to use processor heavy software such as photo editors and video editors.
After getting it running it’s now quite a nice PC, plenty powerful enough for what I need it for and easy to fit additional internal SSD or nvme M.2 drive. The memory slots are easy access too but with 16Gb ram already installed it’s adequate for me. I’ve now calmed down and happy with the purchase after a troubling start.
It is space saving. Good to have the microsoft window11. Fast processor.
It has only 2 UBS sockets. It is better to have at least on more for the printer.
Simple but effective processor.
All good things come in little packages sums up this PC. Having used desktop PCs for a long time I expected this PC to be a stop gap until I get enough cash to buy a “proper computer”. It has already provided pleasant surprises. I may have found the one for me!
The mini-PC has a smart grey plastic case and came in nice packaging (think Apple vibe). The unit has comprehensive connectivity with 4 x USB-3 ports, 1 x USB-C, 2 x HDMI, 1 x ethernet and a 3.5mm audio-out jack socket. There is also a VGA connector for older monitors.
Also included in the box:
a laptop-style power supply
HDMI cable to connect monitor
bracket and screws for mounting unit on back of monitor
a cable for adding an extra internal hard drive.
Keyboard and mouse are not supplied. I used an old Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo. Windows setup was quick and easy, boot time super fast.
There is internal space for mounting an extra hard drive…. easily accessed by removing 4 screws on the bottom of the case (see photo). As supplied, the unit has 500GB storage space, so I personally don’t need to add more storage at the present time. The RAM can also be easily upgraded – there are two memory card slots, only one of which is occupied (with a 16GB card). The i7 has demonstrated great performance so far. As well as the usual office applications, I work with a digital audio workstation and plug-in synthesizers/effects. These can be very demanding on the CPU and so far the unit has handled multiple plug-in instances with ease. Fan noise can be an issue when working with audio and I am pleased to report that the unit remains relatively quiet, even when working under load. One other point worth mentioning…. I work on the other side of the house from our wi-fi router and internet connection can sometimes be a little flaky (especially with my laptop). However I was pleased to see that the Windows indicator showed full signal strength and the internet connection remained fast and stable.
So, all in all, I am extremely pleased with this purchase!
I have this pc connected to my tv so mainly use it for music, streaming and movies as I can take advantage of the usb audio connection, which certainly improves sound quality especially when streaming. The pc is very quiet so when in use their is no distracting noise.
Very happy with the size and performance of this superb powerful PC which meets all of my day to day needs. It has more than enough required connections . Also great customer service. If you are after a mini pc then this is the one you should consider. A++++++++++
The box itself is nice and has a bottom expansion section that you can either use to add a 2.5″ SATA drive, or remove to reduce the height of the system, which I thought was quite nice. Internally, it will also accept a Gen 3 2280 NVMe SSD M.2 SSD, as well as SATA models, of which a 256GB SATA M.2 is already included. You can also add an up to 2TB 2.5in drive in addition to this and have a nice small media server that runs relatively quiet with low power consumption.
The Processor is decent for low power low clocked CPUs. Installed programs run fine, but I have noticed that when internet browsing, its not as fast as I thought it would be. I also noticed that when using the AC Wi-Fi, there were persistent dropouts which were annoying, and that didn’t happen when I ran from an AX Wi-Fi card on my larger desktop to the same modem/router. Over Ethernet, internet is stable, however.
There are some downsides to the way the AK1 has been configured. The CPU cooling fan, although not at jet engine levels, is audible. The 8GB of RAM only runs at 2400 Mts in single channel, where competitors such as the Aerofara A2 Pro Mini run a 2X4GB dual channel configuration at 2933 Mts. This model also has some competition with the MELE Queiter 3 which is also currently reduced to around the same base price of 230, although only 128GB eeMC storage capacity out of the box.
PROs
Really flexible internal storage expansion
Dual HDMI at 4k 60fps
Relatively faster compared to older Celerons such as a J4125.
CONS
Weak Wi-fi
Fan noise
Less than optimal RAM configuration
I was considering returning this and getting the Aerofara instead, but that only has 1 single HDMI, whereas this has 2. The Aerofara uses 2242 M.2 only and you can’t fit a 2280. The only other internal storage expansion option with the Aerofara is a MicroSD slot which this model doesn’t have, but this has much better SATA/M.2 flexibility. For my use case, the AK1 is probably the better choice.
However, I’m tempted to return and pay the extra for the MELE which is silent and passively cooled, as well as expandable and can run from USB C.
Overall, this is a good option, but you really need to consider your use case before deciding what to go with. It’s ok, but DO NOT OVERPAY.
It looks smart with a solid and sleekly built touch. Not sure if it offers the other colours the one I’ve got has black colour and is made of quality plastic. I am particularly impressed by its high specs and capabilities for multi-processing, and online gaming and video streaming. So far we have watched a few Netflix movies, played a few online games, and performed several Microsoft office processing jobs on it and we have encountered absolutely no performance issue or transmission delay.
