Only used a few times but battery life seems similar to the Canon. Importantly it charges in the Canon charger and my R7 recognises the battery so it can be registered in the camera. The advantage of being able to charge via USB will be useful. The blue colour allows it to be easily distinguished from the Canon battery so no mix ups picking up a flat battery by mistake.
Works flawlessly with my Z8, no error messages charges in the Nikon cradle or by the supplied USB lead which is a brilliant thought.
Smallrig has always been a name I’ve trusted, you just know their products are going to work 100% of the time.
Great priced battery.

Positives:
1. Works on the Nikon Z8. No warning messages.
2. The USB-C is a neat fature. Can charge the battery on the move.
3. Good back up battery at a fraction of the price.
Cannot comment on the durability as its almost brand new for me. Will update in 6 months.
I got these batteries to replace some older batteries for my Canon R5. The thing about Smallrig is that they make product that work, hard wearing and affordable (saving around 60% compared to a Canon battery). They work perfectly and can be charged together without lugging around a mains adapter. Would highly recommend!
Good substitute for genuine Fuji battery, the ability to charge via its own USB socket is an excellent Idea. Charge doesn;t last quit as long as the genuine article but not enough to worry about. Good produc
This works great with my a7iv but I get the ‘this battery isn’t etc etc’ message on the fx30 and then I don’t get any kind of battery life indication. Very annoying from Sony
The USB C charging port is a great addition and very useful out in the field if using a power pack. It was this aspect which made me choose this over brands that are much cheaper. Those cheaper brands have lasted just as well as original Nikon batteries, one failed but so did a Nikon one a month later. Third party suppliers are a good choice for hobbyist photographers on a budget. I like the fact this battery is a different colour as I can continue to keep D850 batteries separate from D500 ones, even though they are interchangeable. The extra mAhs is noticeable for sure. Really glad I picked this brand over others.
Used this battery with a Nikon Z7 MKII and it works perfectly. The USB C charging port saves you having to take a charging unit when travelling and enables charging in a variety of locations. Battery life seems very good.
Great batteries, good capacity and easy charging via usb-c BUT watch out, they’re slightly bigger than the original sony NP-F550. I needed one for my battery grip and it wouldn’t fit inside, slightly disappointing, but great for any other use
Fantastic battery.
This is second one i have purchased so i have one in camera and one in the grip.
No need for charger or dock. USB cable plugs directly into battery.
Holds charge superbly.
Quality materials and perfect fit in my camera which also recognises it.
Cannot fault it.
I have tried other brands of this battery and they just weren’t as good in every aspect.
You pay a little more but you get a whole lot more !!
Swapping out my old battery for this one made an undeniable difference. The USB-C charging was efficient, shaving off crucial minutes from the charging time. The capacity kept my camera alive during extended shoots, letting my creativity flow without interruption. Not to mention, the compatibility across various models gave it an edge. Definitely a crucial piece in my photography toolkit.
This battery is a great addition to my Z6II kit bag, its easy to charge via the USB C or standard charger. It lasts longer than the one that came with the camera. It charges quickly and lasts well so I will be using this as a main battery and keeping the other as backup.
It holds a charge longer than the original Nikon battery that came with my camera, and it charges much faster thanks to the USB-C port. I also like that the battery is fully decoded, so I don’t get any error messages when I use it. It’s also the same size and weight as the original Nikon battery, so it fits perfectly in my camera.
Review of Smallrig EN-EL15C battery
Description
Arrives in the usual Smallrig brown cardboard box. The box is sealed which I like for electrical items as you can be sure it is new and not a return. Inside are: a battery with battery cap, USB A to USB C cable and instruction leaflet.
First thoughts this was just a battery, but I was very pleasantly surprised to see it has an integral battery charger as well, no need for a separate plate. Just plug a USB C charging cable into the battery USB C port. The battery has a small red LED when not fully charged which turns green when charged. This is a great idea saves having to carry a separate charging plate although you can still charge this battery in the Nikon battery charger.
In use
This battery fits a wide range of Nikon cameras, often with third batteries the voltage specification is out and the camera will not work or the size is not a perfect fit. I had no issues using this battery on my Nikon Z 8.
In summary a usable replacement for the Nikon EN-EL15C battery. The integral battery charger is fantastic. Only downside is that there is not much price saving compared to an original Nikon battery, but that integral battery charger makes up for this hence five stars.
In terms of openness, I was sent this item under the Amazon Vine programme for an impartial to review.
So…. lots of Nikon owners have the very firm view that they will only use OEM batteries in their cameras.
Fair enough – and if that’s you then this battery clearly isn’t for you.
I try to take a more pragmatic approach – I will not use cheap/unbranded batteries from manufacturers that I’ve never heard of, but SmallRig do not fall into that category – they are a highly reputable company and they are not going to produce an item that is sub-standard and that could damage their reputation.
The huge advantage that this battery has over its OEM equivalent is the USB Type-C charging port – SmallRig claim that this reduces charging time significantly – but it’s the ability to travel with the dedicated charger that really appeals to me.
Compatibility-wise it is suitable for the Nikon Z8 , Z7II , Z7 , Z6II , Z6 , Z5 , D850 , D810 , D810A , D780 , D750 , D610 , D500 , D7500 , D7200. It works fine on my Z7 & Z6 and it’s good to know that it will be suitable for the Z8 that I hope to buy soon.
Early days yet but so far I’m really pleased with it. If it continues to meet my needs then I see no reason for me to buy the OEM version in future – this is a better design for folk like me who are always looking to shed some weight when travelling.
PROS
-work well in my D750
-USB-C charging very convenient (no need to carry dedicated chargers around), can even be charged from powerbanks
CONS
-less capacity than some of my other third party EN-EL15x batteries (but room has to be given to the charging elements, so it’s understandable)
-no indicator of charge when not charging
NOTES
-I have a pair of similar batteries for my Sony A7IV. Charging in the field a few times has been a lifesaver.
MY STAR RATINGS:
1* substandard, mostly cons
2** barely acceptable, cons outweigh the pros
3*** meets the basic requirements, cons balance the pros
4**** good product, pros outweigh the cons
5***** exceptional, all (or almost all) pros
The EN-EL15 battery and its a,b, and c derivatives have been ubiquitous in powering the upper-mid range of Nikon’s cameras for over a decade.
Charging the battery requires an MH-25 mains-powered charger, or one of the many third-party chargers that can run off a car 12V socket. The latest ‘c’ version of the original Nikon battery can be charged via USB-C so long as it’s inside a Nikon Z mirrorless camera, but this stops you using the camera while the battery is charged.
This Smallrig version of the EN-EL15c solves that problem by giving you a battery that can connect and charge directly from a USB-C cable, using a port set into the battery’s side.
The battery is rated at 2400mAh at 7.2V. This is slightly higher than the genuine Nikon EN-EL15c, which is rated at 2250mAh. On receiving the battery, I tried it in a D800, D850 and a Z7ii. All three cameras worked normally with the battery in place.
One concern I have, that I need to investigate further, is that all three cameras reported the battery as full, yet when I put it on charge, it was over an hour before the built-in indicator light changed from red to green to signify 100% charge.
It’s most likely that the battery as delivered was above the threshold level of charge at which the cameras regard the battery to be full, but if, on the other hand, the cameras are unable to report the true state of charge for this battery due to a compatibility issue, that impacts on how comfortable I would be using the Smallrig battery in the field without a ready-charged backup. I’ll monitor this by cycling the battery and report back with my conclusions at a later date.
I’m conflicted about these. Took one as my main battery on a 2-week trip and the convenience of being able to recharge directly from USB-C was great: didn’t have to bother packing the charger and if I got caught out I could charge on the go with a standard power bank.
Unfortunately that happened all too often. It makes sense that including the charging bits in the case will compromise the capacity but in my Canon R6 I was lucky if it lasted a full day. Worse, the charge indicator was completely unreliable – I had it go from 75% charge to dead in less than an hour. Whether that’s the battery itself or the way the camera reads it I don’t know but obviously made management very difficult and you lose confidence when it’s showing anything less than full charge.
To be fair I’m new to mirrorless and need to learn some discipline around turning the camera off when not shooting (never an issue with my old DSLRs) so I can probably improve performance.
I will probably buy another couple because of the convenience, but with slightly gritted teeth. If you’re doing extended shooting or use wifi a lot you probably need at least two to have full confidence, but not having to bother with a charger is a godsend.
So far so very good. The battery needed charging, as expected, before putting in the camera, but once in there were no complaints from the XT5, and it shows it as fully charged. Not sure as yet how many shots I will get from this, but the main benefit for me is having a spare which can be charged from a power bank whilst off the camera, no need for an additional bulky charger and plug when travelling.
It comes with a base cover which doesn’t fit the Fuji battery, so there must be some shape difference, but it’s so minor that the camera doesn’t notice.
I normally stick to OEM batteries but decided to take a chance with this SMALLRIG battery for my R6 mike
and so far I have no regrets. It took approximately just over an hour to charge it out of the box using the original canon charger. (I haven’t tried charging via the supplied USB-C cable)
I checked the battery for overheating etc once it had charged and all was fine so no issues there.
My first trip out and I shot 475 images with my R6MKII and RF100 Macro. Camera settings were One Shot
Single Shooting Electronic 1st Curtain and the Camera switched on permanently for 3 hours. The battery showed 73% power remaining. The camera recognises the battery when you look in the battery info menu.
Time will tell how well the battery will perform etc but at 39.90 I am glad I have made the purchase and it is very well made and as with SMALLRIG the quality is very good (Even the Blue finish isn’t off putting)
If you are looking for an alternative to the OEM Canon LP-E6NH i can recommend this one.
