Got these initially to use a lightning cable to charge the new AirPod Pro with a USB-C port. They work for this purpose. I was hoping to use them to allow a long lightning cord to charge my old Surface Pro 3 with an additional adapter (65W charger USB-C/lightning cord this new adapter USB-C to Surface adapter). That did not work. I briefly got a charging indicator on the Surface but then it stopped. HOWEVER, it’s hard to know what failed here. The Bing Chatbot tells me that I cannot use a lightning cable to charge the Surface, even with an adapter, because the cable itself doesn’t support enough throughput charge. (Ah, yes. The Surface wants 36W and my cable is rated to 20W. OK, then. My bad.)
To be fair, in carefully reading the listing, nothing there should have led me to believe that these would work to charge my Surface. The listing does not specify the maximum wattage that can flow through these, so I don’t know if they would work for the Surface if I were to buy a more robust cable. (But why would I? It would be easier just to buy a USB-C to USB-C cable.) There is a lot of technical detail to understand when you start stringing together multiple charging products into one circuit, so keep this in mind.
But I digress: I tested this product only on the new AirPods Pro. It works. It is very affordable. The connection at the female lightning end is slightly wobbly, which makes me wonder about long-term durability. One star off for that, but a good cheap product to extend the usable life of your lightning cables for phones and low-power products with USB-C charge ports.
This is exactly what I needed to deal with a future issue. I recently got three six-foot USB-A to Lightning cables for use as iPhone charging cables. However, two family members needing this, will be upgrading to iPhone 15 smartphones in the near future.
This adapter will allow me to use the USB-C ports on these new phones with the same Lightning cables.
I tested this adapter with one of those cables, connecting it to my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra phone, and it worked perfectly in my car as a charging cable. I have not tried these adapters (or the cables) for data, but that should work, I would think. Not sure if it would be faster than stock Lightning speeds though!
I particularly like the little rubber straps that keep the adapters near the cable Lightning connector … they work well to prevent losing them. This alone justifies the 5 stars on the product!
As the title says, I upgraded from my old iPhone X to a new iPhone 15 Pro and ended-up with a bunch of Lightning cables I could no longer use since iPhone 15 comes with USB-C connector. With these, I can use my existing cables. That may not seem that important to most people, but I had routed one of my cables though the panels in my car, and I really didn’t want to go through doing that again with a new USB to USB-C cable for the new phone and with this adapter, I didn’t need to. It works fine both for charging the phone as well as to transfer data, which is also great. One reason I deducted one star is that as shown in the picture, there are 3 adapters and 2 straps to make sure they attach to the original cable and don’t get lost. Again, this may not be important to many people but it made no sense to have 3 adapters and 2 of those straps!
PROS
Good value for 3 adapters. Adapters feel very sturdy. I tested the adapters with my iPhone 15 Pro. They successfully charged, connected to my iMac, and connected to CarPlay in my Kia Soul. There’s not too much to say about them, they simply work. The physical connection feels very strong but…
CONS
There is a lot of wiggle in the connection. It still take a decent amount of force to disconnect the adapter from the Lightning cable though, so it’s not likely to unplug by accident but I’d still prefer something more snug.
The silicone straps are cool and handy, but it only comes with 2 when there are 3 adapters. The listing clearly states it only comes with 2, but it feels like it makes a lot more sense to have another one thrown in for each adapter.
OVERALL
A simple adapter that does what it’s supposed to to and provides a good value.
