At the time of writing we’re just getting past the height of pesky fly season so I’m easing off using this Mosquito Company Fungus Gnat Control regularly but it has been a real boon through the Summer. I’ve tried products like it before and they’ve mostly been successful in breaking the life cycle of sciatic flies in our houseplants and although it doesn’t directly kill the flies it stops them becoming an ongoing problem.
This is a small bottle of concentrate that you dilute with water which you then use to water your plants. However it’s not all that concentrated and you need about a quarter of this bottle to create a watering can full of solution. The solution will be most effective in the topmost layer of compost because that’s where the flies lay eggs which hatch into larvae so I usually apply this solution the day after I’ve watered the plants so the solution isn’t just going to drain straight through the compost or gather at the bottom of the pot where it doesn’t do so much.
It takes a few days but as an existing crop of flies naturally dies off they aren’t replaced by the next generation and the problem is all but eliminated. Of course new flies coming in from outside can lay a new batch of eggs but keeping your compost regularly treated means they’ll never reach adulthood. It does work but it’s not an instant knockdown solution.
There’s nothing worse than bringing a pot inside or even potting up something new in fresh compost to find it swarming with little flies a week or two later. This is part of the control method by targeting the soil. It won’t do anything for flies that are already out but it’s very easy to use, applying to the water like you would a fertiliser. It’s super quick and simple and without harsh chemicals so a real winner for me. Excellent for house plants and anyone with a conservatory. This will get lots of use over the next few weeks and months for me as things like citrus and tender plants come in for the winter. Recommended.
Every year I bring my Chilli plants indoors to overwinter, it gives me a head start for the following year. But every year I am plagued by fungus gnats.
The chemical control I have been using is toxic and I don’t like using it on my edible plants.
This product is pesticide free, a natural fungicide and makes a huge 30 litres when diluted. Not only that but you can use it every 7 to 10 days.
I’m hopeful this will keep the gnats at bay this winter.
You water the soil, so I’m hoping it will be effective at stopping them at the larvae stage.
