ROKR Locomotive Wooden Model kit For Adult – Locomotive Model Building Kits – Christmas Birthday Gifts For Teens and Adults (Prime Steam Express)
Was given the Prime Steam Express Train as a gift and have just finished it!
Really great fun and VERY well put together.
Particularly impressed that they included lots of spare parts for the more fiddly and critical pieces.
I am already thinking about which model to get/ask for next!
I brought one of these from a different website it was far more expensive it took weeks for It to turn up and when it did it was a Chinese lucky cat. I was very very disappointed.
Then I found this on it was a lot cheaper so I brought another one and this one was exactly what I wanted, it was a Christmas present for my sister in law and she loved it, would only buy these from Amazon from now o
I bought this as a christmas gift for my step-dad who loves trains. It was a hit! He has been building bits every day since. The wood is thick enough that it doesn’t look flimsy, and the cut out parts are all beautiful.
first attempt at wood art and my partner loved it. beautifully cut wood, some small fiddly pieces need a bit of patience but well worth the effort.
quality is very good. delivery was quick too.
highly recommend
This is absolutely not a model for beginners. It is extremely complicated especially within the inner workings of the engine. It is however absolutely absorbing and an excellent antidote to long covid ruled days!!
What can I say, this product was a life saver for my elderly grandfather during Covid-19 lockdown. He literally told me, building this saved his life, giving him something to focus on. We sent him several puzzles, but he loved this the best! I wholeheartedly recommend these to anyone looking to keep their mind active and pass the time. Any age can build these, young and old. My grandfather has his proudly on display in his living room, along with a clock from another similar seller. Highly recommend this product!
This model is enjoyable to make and took me an afternoon. No glue is required. The parts are well produced and fit together well. It has been well thought out. The instructions are good and they have taken care to point out common pitfalls – so make sure you read ahead.
The valve gear is a little tricky and you need to ensure you know your left from your right. There are some internal cogs which I could not fathom the purpose of. They appear to have no function and are fiddly to fit. They include a tool for this.
There are some spare parts of the smaller items so don’t worry if you have some left over. What ever you do keep the parts on the sprue if you can as not all are marked. Some are printed on one side so use your common sense (and the instructions also indicate) when to have them facing outwards.
It is reasonably strong but some parts are fine and easily broken. Some of the components do have a fairly tight fit and I was left wondering just how much pressure I could use. The wheels remain quite loose and I may put a dab of glue on those now it is complete.
The tender top opens and it looks like you could use it as a “piggy bank” if you wanted. Cool.
Definitely not suitable for a child and they say for over 14s.
Great gift, but I would say quite challenging to build. No glue or tools needed.
Once made I would put it in a safe place as it would not tolerate being dropped.
I’ve done simpler versions of this in the past but this is the first time I’ve done a massive build like this.
As others have said this isn’t a beginners kit, and generally I’d say for adults or older (11+?) children who have the concentration and persistence for it, it’s not airfix, it’s properly hard. It’ll take days.
You may find various tools will help finish edges where they don’t fit properly, stuff like craft knives and the edge of scissors, tiny nail file things (I think they call it emery boards?), stuff like that. It does come with a piece of sandpaper but the nail ones are on a wood stick so definitely help.
You may also wish – although it’s entirely optional – to glue some pieces.
The finished model is pretty epic, and quite sizeable too. It makes the whole thing well worth doing, it’s a display piece.
I’ve seen these for sale at various science based attractions (before lockdown obviously) but for much more than the price at time of reviewing, it’s really good value here.
The only downside I can see is that it opens a can of worms. You’ll want the next set, and it might be an automaton one. I’m eyeing up the clock.
This is the third product I’ve had from Rokr, I’ve got to say, we LOVE the brand.
My son aged 11 is massively into DT and has tried his hand at numerous wooded construction kits. Some from the Imperial War Musuem in London. Some kits to build military vehicles that were sadly ill fitting and flimsy. We’ve had varied success from such kits and with experience, have grown to realise that it’s all in the quality , thickness of the wood and how well it’s been laser cut in manufacturing.
The kits by Rokr have never let us down. The sets are plentiful with many small intricate pieces, yet not one if them has ever snapped on us.
This one is manufactured just as well it’s counterparts my son is really enjoying the challenge of constructing it and requires no help as the instructions are clear and concise.
Now, this is the first time I have ever attempted to build a model. The box contains instructions, pre-cut sheets that have all the pieces you need to build this train and also a small piece of sandpaper.
The pieces pop out the sheet easily enough and following the instructions I was able to start building. I did find that there were times when the intrusions felt a little vague and this did cause some head-scratching. Luckily for me, I have a neighbour who was able to point me in the right direction.
The majority of the pieces were fine to fit together, but some felt a little bit flimsy and I did have a couple of breaks and had to carefully glue back together.
While I did enjoy putting this together there were times when it was infuriating as I felt I needed 6 hands to keep things in place while fitting bits together. This is why I think it is a set better suited to someone with prior experience. At the moment I still have a few more steps to do, and I have progressed further on than my photo shows.
This is a nice model and so far looks really good. It does take a few hours to put together and I probably still have another couple of hours to go before it is finished. If you like a challenge or something to keep your fingers and brain busy then this would be good.
This is a good model kit that I think modellers, train enthusiasts and hobbyists would like and even though it has frustrated me at times I would recommend it.
My son-in-law LOVES puzzles so he is delighted with this 3D train locomotive puzzle and is in the middle of building it now. I was surprised when I received it that the box is so small and slim as it makes a model that’s approx 30cm long, 80cm high and 70cm wide, so it’s definitely flat packed!!
The level of detail is incredible and quite intricate with real attention to detail. The individual pieces are well made and the scaling seems accurate. It’s quite fiddly as you would expect for this scaled model of a locomotive, so lots of lateral thinking and patience required, but I’m sure this will be paid off by a stunning to scale intricate model at the end of it. I love the fact that the model just assembled without glue, and that does make it seem more like a puzzle than a model. Due to the complexity of the model the age suggested is 14+ (very + in our case!), it if you have a particularly bright child who loves detail and engineering and has patience, then I’m sure you could give to a younger child, especially if it’s a parent/carer/child household project.
You may feel that 21.99 (at the time of review) is a bit steep, but when you see the detail and craftsmanship you’ll see why and it will be a long project to keep everyone occupied, so overall offers good value for money. For something a bit different for anyone who likes puzzles, models, trains, budding engineers or is detail orientated, or likes to keep busy (it’s quite a good way to stress manage as you’re so focussed on the complexity of the build there isn’t room for any other thoughts) then this is an ideal gift.
p.s. will add photo when complete!
