Mice
Mice are a highly adaptive and invasive species and they’re able to populate a variety of ecosystems. Agricultural fields, buildings, and boats are all viable habitats. In more temperate climates there will be even more possible nest sites. Swimming, climbing, jumping proficiency, and the two incisors on their upper jaw, all make for a formidable predator wherever they reside. However, despite all of these amazing abilities, the house mouse chooses to reside, as its name would indicate, in a home.
House mice (Mus Musculus Domesticus) are a highly adaptive member of the genus Mus (mouse), yet for some reason they choose to live in the least demanding environment, a human home. They are attracted by the continuous flow of food and warmth, ideal for nest sites. The offer of food and shelter is so tempting that many choose to stay and breed year-round.
Diet
As one can imagine, the palate of a house mouse is highly adaptable since every habitat they migrate through will hold different opportunities for feeding. Outside dwellers will eat insects and a lot of grain, however, inside dwelling mice are practically omnivorous and, just like brown rats, will consume 10-15% of their body weight each day in just about anything we throw away. Most house mice will nibble on multiple different food sources to obtain their required nutrition, up to 20 times each night, since they’re nocturnal.
A large proportion of a mouse’s 3g daily intake will be grain, namely cereal, favouring high-energy, man-made foods. Studies have proven that the levels of aggression in both rats and mice can be attributed to this high fat ‘human’ diet they have both been on for so long. These foods increase oestrogen levels and results in a shorter temper and longer periods of aggression.
Evidence of intrusion
- 3-6 mm long droppings, black and rod-shaped. Approximately 80 per day, often appearing in clusters.
- Spotted in various places including attics, storage boxes, floorboards, disused cupboards. Check around fridges, ovens, heating units and washing machines too.
- Check wood, paper, cables, carpet and furniture for marks.
- Dark grey marks on surfaces from oil on hair.
- Although they don’t sweat, they emit a musky odour and urinate a lot, producing an ammonia smell.
- Hearing pattering feet in walls at night could be a sign of a mouse or rat infestation.
- If your dog is barking at night at what seems to be nothing, it could be picking up the scent or sounds of rodents.

I’ve lived in our house for 14 years and 5 days ago found evidence of mice for the very first time. I bought these traps because of the reviews and have not been disappointed. First mouse was caught within first 30 minutes of the trap being set and I have caught a further 2 the same day I’ll continue to set them and hope the mice will be completely gone soon!
I had a few instances where the mice took the bait and the traps didn’t go off, but as they wear a bit I’m hoping they get a bit more sensitive
Less than 2hrs after placing these got the first intruder that other traps have failed to get for weeks. The trigger is very sensitive so they can’t steal the bait like other traps and the force and design ensure a quick, humane kill. Easy to dispose of the body without needing to handle it as well and easy to clean. Wish I’d of bought these in the first instance instead of wasting my money elsewhere
yea these are good, easy to set, I hate killing mice but if you leave them as I did once they just don’t stop breading my caser 2 became 16, and with it fleas.
Clean kill if you can get the mouse to come near it and easy to clear and reset. Most mice in our house seem to be too wise to do so though.
Snaptraps are, despite appearances, more humane than poison and you get to see how effective they are. Put down poison and apart from the risk they could die outside and be eaten by birds who are themselves poisoned the effect it is having is less obvious. Make sure you keep handling of these traps to avoid scent transfer and they work very well. Cleared the mice in my kitchen after I blocked the hole they were coming in through.
Put two of the four purchased down and caught the critter after two days. Another ate the blue block poison . 2-0 to me. No more trouble since but will empty garage when weather better. Easy to set and reset.
Was kind of tempted to add some photos of dead mice caught in the trap but though that might be too grisly. Anyway these traps work, kill mice. Don’t use big bits of cheese as bait as mice can often get these without triggering the trap. Peanut butter works. I don’t really like peanut butter. Have found a bird peanut stuck in with some honey works well too.
Set these up along with some bigger ones made by a different brand (wasn’t sure if I had a rat or a mouse as I only caught a very brief glimpse of whatever it was). The mouse stole some poison bait from the bigger traps but didn’t set off the trap or die from the poison… I put peanut butter on these ones and caught the mouse super quick. It didn’t kill it instantly unfortunately as I could hear it struggling for about 20 seconds but after that it was very much gone. Can’t really ask for much more especially for the price. Don’t bother with the attractant, just use nut butter as it’s stickier.
Caught the 2 mice on the 1st night !!
We did use the catch and release and caught 1 over 2 months so had to kill them 🙁
Worked fast – very powerful i do recommend
Bought a pack of these after the first two got used up. I put a little peanut butter in the bowl with the attractant (I read this was a good tip). The first kills was in the first night, but I could see another mouse had taken all the food following the catch of its friend. — chewing up the trap to get every little bit.
I put another down, and was amazed as the trap caught another just after I came back from dealing with the first.
Every hit was very decisive – I hate having to kill the mice, would rather have used the non-kill traps, but they just didn’t fall for them – but at least this one kills quickly minimising suffering.
Also realised I prefer these to poison – because the dead mice are disposed off with real ease; meaning no rotten carcass under the floorboards.
I have used these traps for years. They are easy to set, easy to bait and they work. Mice can’t resist the STV163 bait and it doesnt go off or fly across the attic like cheese does.
What more can you say, Big Cheese mouse traps with the correct bait catch mice.
Amazing product, we tried different traps since we discovered our friends mouse visiting the loft and nothing worked.
I purchased this amazing traps and within 2 days we find 3 little mouse. Worth every penny! Thank you selle
Caught it overnight but i have to say that its in the middle of nowhere on land with horses n not much else so not accustomed to them like these vile nasty disease ridden London Mice, these guys are are hard core nothing stops them except a sticky glue pad and even then you got to put a 3 course meal right in the centre otherwise they are likeno way!!!ive sent in the military to these things theyre like “whatever “…pls tell me if you have any ideas ive done all the usual peppermint caviar fxxxxxx filth.
And then they invaded my garage and their lives got even worse.
I can’t think of a single upside to being a mouse. Not one. There you are just minding your own mousy business, happily weeing and pooing all over Childrens toys in a random garage and then WHAM! Corrugated mousy.
Ok so these things work. Never had to trap mice before and I’m not exactly enjoying the whole experience but what has to be done has to be done.
I’m up to nine mice now but thankfully the kill rate has dropped to one every couple of days so hopefully we’ll soon be clear of the poor little things.
Using a combination of poison bait stations and traps. Most of the time these traps kill the mice dead but there’s been two occasions where I’ve had to dispatch the unfortunate creatures with the Mallet of Mercy because they’ve been partially trapped and have still been alive and suffering.
On one occasion Mr mousey ate poison, got corrugated in a trap AND still had to be finished with a tap from the Mercy Mallet.
Like I said, there’s no upside to being a mouse so be prepared to have to get your hands and conscience dirty.
Although its not a nice thing to have to recommend, if you need to resort to these things then they do the job.
We’ve had a few small furry visitors and I have tried a variety of brands, these are the ones that have been the most successful, would definitely recommend. A little bit more expensive than others I have bought, but as they get the job done, I have no complaints.
The lady of the house seriously does not like mice. She had to vacate the premises until it or they were caught.
Left for a week and luckily (well not for the mouse) the trap work. We tried the sticky mats as a more humane solution, but it kept on escaping by time I checked. Would definitely recommend.
I used to have a bigger mousetraps that scared the bejeebus out of me. If the had gone off unexpectedly, they would have broken my fingers
I was a bit sceptical when these turned up, they seemed a lot less powerful – and they are – I’m not scared of them
But, they do their deadly job very efficiently and quickly
The bait they come with seems very, very good at it’s job
And disposing of the catch is simple, requires little effort, and you don’t have to touch it
