Our kids loved taking turns and opening the day’s gemstone. It is a nice collection of stones, though we had some repeats that they were disappointed about. The squares where you punch out the days are also fragile so by the time you get halfway through, the top cover gets quite torn up and you can easily see underneath to the unopened squares. I wish it was glued down or something to help maintain an element of surprised. Otherwise, a nice advent calendar with cool gemstones!
It’s great stones. But there’s no numbers on it, so I guess you just pick and choose. Definitely for a older kids. It’s really good quality tho and my teen is enjoying it.
I have not opened it because I got this for my little friend next door (he is 5) and every time his mom and he visit he is obsessed with my crystals. So I thought this was a really cool idea, very unique idea and I am super excited to give it to him!! He is gonna love it!!! Will update if I encounter any issues when we open it!!
I have loved rocks since I was a little kid, and several members of the next generation feel the same way, so I’m super excited about this advent set. It’s a good variety of rocks. I love that there are photos/descriptions on a big card, but I kind of wish they were smaller cards that opened with each rock since it would be more exciting to read about each rock as they were opened, and not get a preview to what other rocks are in the advent. Also, it’s not really a preview because some rocks are duplicates. Also … the calendar isn’t labelled 1-24! I really wish they had labelled each one so it’s easier to keep track that that day’s rock hadn’t been opened yet.
I have bought a “bag of gems” at tourist shops before (like near the entrance to some national parks) and it’s less expensive to buy rocks that way. Really, the fun here is the surprise element, which makes me all the more frustrated that there isn’t a 1-24 advent calendar label.
Overall, it’s a really fun advent calendar with a nice set of gems.
My kids are big rock and gemstone collectors. I thought this would be a fun advent calendar for one of them. It’s a great candy alternative. The assortment is great and has some that they’ve never gotten before. It includes a chart with all the gemstones and information about them. It also came with a velvet pouch and magnifying glass. The box was a bit rough on arrival though. One of the punch outs was gone and several are already partially opened.
I am very impressed by this advent rock calendar’s offerings. The rocks are pretty big. The smallest is about 3/4 inch while the bigger ones average about 1.5 inches. I’m used to the gemstone digging kits because my kid likes them, and those gemstones tend to be tiny for the effort. These are a satisfying size with nice variation. I would have preferred a collection of all polished ones, but this is still a great set.
Inside the box is a small black pouch with a plastic magnifying glass, which is a nice touch, except if I hadn’t opened the box to pull out the tray I probably wouldn’t have realized it was in there. The only negative is that the box needs to be sturdier, especially the perforations for each day. One slot already opened up when I got this, and a few others are about to. It’s because the weight of the rocks are a bit too substantial and can just bust through. There was a loose piece of card stock with rock descriptions on it that I slid in there to prevent the other slots from breaking until the countdown begins. Otherwise, I’m pretty happy with this unique advent calendar!
I was expecting to see a bunch of small stones when opening the calendar but was pleasantly surprised to see that most are rather large, and about half of them are polished. Due to the larger size of some of the stones, the flaps of the calendar could be a bit hard to open, although since the intent is not necessarily to reuse the box, ripping the flap off is no big deal. Or, the box can be opened and the entire tray slid out to see all the stones at once.
Included in the box, beneath the tray were two pouches, one containing the magnifying glass. The back of the box has a separate poster that describes the different stones, in addition to the actual back of the box which also includes descriptions. It would have been nice if each stone was labeled, but that would also take away some of the fun of determining for yourself what each one is.
I did deduct a star, though, as I have a couple of duplicates in my box, and therefore don’t have all the stones that are shown on the poster and box back. However, I’d still recommend this for those who are interested in geology.
