Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’m a big plant guy love me some plants, but I always struggle to get the watering right, and we all know how frustrating it is to over-water a plant and get those pesky gnats, because once they move in, there’s no getting rid of them. So I had the idea of getting this, covering the top few inches of all my plants with it, and then using this as a water indicator (i.e. once these have dried out, I’d know that it was time to water the plants), so let’s review and see if that actually worked

Spoiler alert. It did! It worked like a charm. So first of all, the quality of this is great, it’s well packaged, you get a lot of this in the packaging, it’s fantastic value for money and this goes a long way I have a decent amount of plants, and it covered most of my collection to be honest – I basically removed some of the top soil, and added this in its place.

The good thing about this stuff is it retains the water / moisture, meaning that when it’s drenched with water, it’ll darken as it absorbs the water, and then once it dries out, it’ll turn back to a pale / dried out colour – meaning you have an indicator that your plant needs to be watered again soon.

Works so so well! I am very happy with this, and my plants are looking fantastic if I do say so myself right now, so this is a definite recommendation from me, and a big fat plant loving 10/10

I ordered this because I have been noticing fungus gnats flying around a few of our houseplants, and I wanted a natural way of treating them. I tried other treatments, like neem oil, but the smell was atrocious. I wanted something effective that was also odour free.

This plant topper is exactly what I was looking for; it works great without nasty chemicals or horrific smells, so I am very happy.

I don’t particularly like houseplants, simply due to the fact that I end up with infestations in the soil and pesky flying things despite trying many things.
This grit says it will stop this naturally. I like the fact that it is apparently safe around pets and children and does not use chemicals.
It is simple enough to use, you just add a layer to the top of your houseplants. I was surprised that it was a beige colour as it is shown as white on the packet. Also there were some quite large lumps which did not break up between my fingers.
I have not seen any creatures since but time will only tell, but the pots do look nicer without the soil on show. I always water from the bottom, so think one application will last a long time.
You get quite a lot for 9.99 as I was surprised how little I actually used.

I’ve had issues with little flies invading my yucca plant recently and nothing seems to have gotten rid of them. I’ve repotted it, I’ve had the sticky yellow traps (and they do get loads of them), but they still keep coming. I was advised to cover the top of the soil in pebbles to stop them getting access as easily, but this also hasn’t prevented them multiplying down there.

So this Gnat Stop is my next best try. I’ve used it as per the instructions and so far I think it may be reducing the population somewhat as the number I’m seeing is certainly less. It’s too early to say for certain if it’s going to completely rid the plant of the flies altogether, but I’m hopeful based on the results so far.

It works in a way that’s similar to the pebble coverage, but with added ingredients to help counter the pesky gnat resilience. It tells me this is made from natural ingredients so should be child/pet safe, although I’m not sure what those ingredients are exactly as the details aren’t clear. Here’s hoping it’s the solution I’ve been looking for though and so far it’s on course to be!

The Gnat Stop Plant Pot Topper arrived well-sealed and as described. The pouch I received looks just like the photos advertised.

I got this to kill some pesky gnats that were destroying my happiness and my house plant. I found the product easy to apply and it didn’t leave a huge mess. It’s an ultra-fine powder that I sprinkled on using my gloved fingers.

The product claims to be all-natural however there are no ingredients printed on the packaging and there’s nothing on the company’s website to claim what the ingredients of this product are so I guess I’ll never know. A little bit annoying as I like to know what I’m putting on my plants, I assume it’s diatomaceous earth as it looks and feels similar but who knows?

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’ve been battling with fungus gnats for a looooong time. I’ve tried all of ye olde gardener’s tips: the water/dish soap/neem oil spray; the sticky yellow traps; the total repot in fresh compost. Nothing worked. Then one of the many YouTube videos I’ve watched talked about putting horticultural grit round your plants to cover the compost. And, do you know, it damn near completely worked. Reduced the gnat population drastically. The only thing about horticultural grit is, it’s weighty, and some of my plants didn’t really like it. I switched to broken sea shells, which look nice and seemed to work, but they shift around too easily with watering and leave the compost exposed – the flippin’ gnats are back. Grrrr.

Short of going full-on nuclear and using the tub of Mosquito Bits I bought as a last resort, I’m piloting this Gnat Stop stuff on my unhappiest of plants, my bird’s nest fern. The packet doesn’t actually tell you the product ingredients, but by the look of it, it’s a mix of what appears to be fine grit and diatomaceous earth powder.

It was easy enough to spoon in around the top of the pot and although dusty at first, it settled down nicely onto the damp compost. Let’s see how it goes. I’ll report back when I’ve finished the bag…

Having battled with fungus gnats for many years I know that the only sure way to eradicate them is to remove all plants and pots for a few weeks in order to break the life cycle.
Sticky traps are very good for removing adults but they will already have deposited eggs which quickly hatch into larvae and then metamorphose into adults. Spreading a material such as Gnat Stop can help by creating a repellent barrier on the surface of the soil.
I am disappointed that the composition of the material is not shown. Saying that it consists of non-toxic ingredients sounds good but, as far as I’m aware, there is no legal definition of ‘non toxic’.
Will I use Gnat Stop? I already am.

Seems to work pretty darn well at deterring infestations! I only had a few fungus gnats constantly pestering my dendrobium and they’ve all cleared up after applying this.

There’s no real instructions other than to apply 1-2mm around your plant/on top of the soil and to re-apply after watering.
Mostly it seems like its a protective barrier to deter gnats from getting into the soil begin with – and it’s pretty easy to make a solid layer with how fine the powder is.
There are some larger chunks but they can be sieved out or broken down into powder again.

Not knowing what this is made of, despite its safety label, I wouldn’t advise using it around areas where pets will come into contact with it. I would assume it’s something along the lines of Diatomaceous earth or pumice.

I’ve had trouble with Fungus Gnats for years and my house has yellow sticky fly traps with every plant, which do a good job in catching them but it would be good to stop them rather than kill them, so I’m interested to see how effective this Topper is.

It is made up of small balls and a lot of dust in the gripper-topped packet – you can see it in my photos. It’s a little fiddly getting it onto the soil with plants that have leaves near the base, but I put it over a larger plant saucer and it caught the little balls as they chose to roll off where I’d placed them! I can see how it would stop the Gnats getting access to the soil and it looks quite attractive too. There’s enough here to do a lot of pots and it states it is made of natural ingredients, so not harmful to plants, children, or pets. I will wait to see how this progresses but for now, so far, so good!

I’ve been using this for just over a week now to see if it will cure a problem I have with a monstera plant.
I have had small flies and gnats on the surface of the soil and tried various remedies to no avail.
This is a pack of a sort of fine grain sized grit and lots of dust that sits on the surface of the soil and presumably stops the insects from getting to the sail.
After a week I have noticed fewer insects in the air or on the pot but at present it hasn’t eradicated them completely.
I am going to continue using it, and probably replenish it after a couple of weeks.
They are less of a problem now but the jury is out on whether they are going to continue to decline.

The granules don’t have any instructions on the packet, the only instructions are on the listing pictures and it only says to sprinkle 1-2mm around the plant base and reapply after watering, which isn’t very in-depth.
The topper is granular, mostly fine grained with some larger bits mixed in and is a grey colour. I don’t think it looks very attractive on top of the pots but I’m hoping it will do the trick though and get rid of the fungus gnats that have been plaining my house plants for a couple of years on and off. Only time will tell if it is effective and I shall update this review in due course.
