Putting bird feed into the little bait cup was all I needed to do set the trap and by morning it had done it’s job. Set all 4 and the first night caught 3!! Brilliant purchase
Best traps we have ever used, very efficient. Sturdy and well made. Need to make sure your fingers are out of the way of spring, just something to be aware of.
Only complaint is fox seems to have run off with one of them and enjoyed their supper from Two of them
Now attached to long pieces of wood.
These are very good quality and value for money rat traps.
I have not yet caught any rats with them yet as I have only just put them out today (Friday 19th).
There was good communication between me and the seller and they arrived sooner than expected so thumbs up to the seller for that.
10 Minutes! I’ve been watching 3 run around the back of my garden and the live cages weren’t working. They had to go, don’t like doing it, but set them up and 10 minutes later had my first rat. They are clever so let’s see how long before the next one. Seemed like a clean kill so praise for not suffering, which is what poison does.
Got these traps 29th of march put one under my kitchen cupboard and lastnight got my first victim.
I dont like doing it and my wife did’nt to look at the huge Rat eating away at my units…..easy to use so, i give this trap my five star rating.
Used half a rolo in each and got these the 1st night!
Little tip: I’m used to setting traps but hubby trapped his fingers. Don’t touch the part covered with the red rubber, just pull the opposite side to set.
Happy with my purchase. You need to exercise care when setting or deactivating the trap. Helpfully, there are instructional videos online that you can view. An instruction card is also provided with the product. The product arrived in good time and is as described. They seem quite robust. I haven’t needed to clean one yet but I think it would be easy to clean when needed.
Work great with peanut butter or Nutella. Only downsides I think I’ve found is the little red tube helps the bigger rats wriggle out from the trap as it rolls over their body. I’ve cut it off a couple of them and I feel they work better for it. Also when the weather is cold the plastic must become brittle as I’ve had one snap in half from the power of the trap setting off without catching the rat.
I bought the two trap two station version (SXTRAP2-691a / B00XL3P51C) for which the description said: “This kit includes 2 x powerful rat traps, 2 x tamper-resistant bait stations & 1 x BAIT SYRINGE.”
However when I opened the box I found two stations and trap but no bait!
Now I’ve got to set these with my own bait until I can get hold of customer support which will now be after the festive season.
Also, the instructions promised are pretty limited so thank goodness for the online video. And I still have no clue what the metal rods, zip ties and plastic arches are for.
Fingers crossed the traps are as good as the other reviews.
Update had superb customer service from Fort products and they resolved my questions and addressed the missing bait issue.
Nicely made traps that are powerful and easy to set. Worth putting inside a cardboard box with at least TWO cut-outs for the critters to get in, (but probably not out). Keep the traps on the edge of rooms/sheds/gardens as rodents will rarely cross open spaces. The box has two functions. Firstly you can write with a big red pen “Danger – set Rat Traps”, so that no one accidentally puts their hands on them. (You could accidentally leave them dangerously ‘set’ for years and forget that are there). Secondly, if you do SPLAT a rat, it’s inside a disposable box!
As a pet rat owner, I feel bad about killing these intelligent animals but once the numbers start to go up things quickly gets out of control. Live ‘trap and release’ – which can work with smaller rodents – is not really a viable option, as they are very smart and find their way back!
These traps are very sturdy and the spring is powerful. So much so I was a bit unsure how to lay the traps out whilst not setting them off. Holding the base in one corner seemed to do the trick. They are pretty easy to clean as well, the trickiest bit is getting the peanut butter out from the cup. Considering the price I think these are very good value and the most important thing is they work.
I have recently discovered a rat coming into out house through water main pipe entry in kitchen. I’ve been leaving bits of food out on the kitchen floor and it will always be gone next morning ing. This was to relax the rat to any danger. I bought these, set up one in a narrow entry between washing machine and wall with cranberry sauce as the bait. Came downstairs next morning to find a 45 cm long rat fully given the Christmas food send off. I will keep these in place to monitor any other vermin, and I was amazed at how fast these worked, even with my prep. Very easy to install, easy to clean and reset. Comes with clear guidelines and tips as well.
I did have a problem one of the set of four I bought but the company has sent another, which I am grateful for as there was no hassle. The traps are solidly made and the springs are powerful enough for a very large rat. Two screw holes allow for fixing to a solid surface which I have done with mine. It allows for safer setting with no cracked fingers. A decent trap and a helpful company.
The trap goes off very easily which should be a good thing. A few times I’ve been just putting the box in place with the trap set and the trap went off even though I was being gentle with it. This should be a good thing but I found a trap cleaned of the peanut butter I smeered on the trigger and into the cup but the trap was still set. It did catch a shrew in the trap though. But my traps didn’t come with the two bars pictured with the boxes and traps.
I have the traps out with over a week and I can see rat urine in them but no rat ye
These traps are pretty decent and will do the job with medium sized rats. The spring has plenty of power to deal with them quickly. One of these has killed 5 rats in the last week alone.
Not really designed for huge rats, but I have caught one in this by building a tunnel to guide it in head first. The trap was screwed down to the tunnel to stop it jumping.
Otherwise, if you know you have really big rats, use a mk4 Fenn trap with a tunnel. It’s even more powerful and more humane.
To stop the traps jumping, I have screwed them to a half inch piece of timber, just to add weight. See photo. It definitely reduces the number of escapes caused by the trap jumping clear of the rat!
The trap will not go off with smaller rats unless you pre-load the trigger, that is to move the pressure plate a little after setting the trap to create a hair trigger. Don’t do that with your fingers! Without doing this, the rat has a few extra milliseconds to react as they feel the plate move before it releases the trap. That has sometimes been the difference between a kill and a miss, or worse, the rat eats all the bait and the trap doesn’t even fire!
I have found that peanut butter attracts them, and also Thai jasmine rice seems to be popular. If the rats are already feeding, remove the food source and use the same food as bait, they are less suspicious of it.
All in all, these are not bad at all, especially for the price. A simple mod with timber makes them even better!
