Great value for money. Great little present for somebody, possibly for secret santa.
Although the instructions can be a little confusing, it was a great activity for someone to do.
Interesting product. I’m going to buy a fully grown bonsai tree so I have something to aim for. Since I’m stuck indoors it is nice to have a project that can be done indoors.
Bought this for my wife for Christmas as she’s always wanted a bonsai, they are pride of place on the kitchen window, but of the 40 plus seeds she got only 6 have started growing. She’s followed a few YouTube videos to try and trick a few to think its been winter and then spring, but it only worked with 1
Bought this as a gift for my partner at Christmas 2020. Only 3out of 5 seed types have sprouted on our first attempt but we have more than one of each sprouting. I recommended making sure the holes in the bags are made rather big (around .5cm diameter) to allow air circulation prevent mould. I am looking forward to watching them grow
Only giving this product a 4 because only the Scots pine and Norway spruce germinated the rest of the seeds either floated when they were soaked or just didn’t take.
But never the less I have a good few tree seedlings and this is a very good and throrough beginner kit.
i do like this as it a good hobby. however you need lots of patience as it takes 4 years to grow and needs lots of care. as it says it comes with 5 seeds but only 2 of them have germinated and the other 3 haven’t so i will throw them away. However there are more seeds in the pack so there is enough for second round.
I write a review myself, but in this situation I am only a sponsor.
It ‘s support for his wife ‘s passion.
1) A great set of five types of trees.
2) All in one – what else is needed?
3) Absolutely everything is clear, everything is provided. I don ‘t see any obstacles that experience won ‘t succeed.
So far it is a little cold, so they postponed cultivation for 3-4 weeks.
I will supplement the withdrawal, after the mission has been completed.
Thanks a lot!
I’ve had this kit for 3 weeks now and am so pleased with such quick results, particularly after reading other reviews on here!
So far I’ve had 4 Scots Pines germinate, 4 Norway Spruces and 1 Larch.
Half of the six Red Maple seeds I planted rotted unfortunately, but I will try again eventually if the other three don’t take- there are plenty of seeds left!
Will update and post pictures as I go along.
Waiting on seeds to germinate, so it’s not possible to comment on that side of things, but looking inside the box, you get everything you need to get you started + it’s all very nicely packed. You don’t just get 1 or even 3 seeds of each species but you get, or should I say, I got at least 10 of each species, which hopefully makes it quite foolproof, as is the instructions booklet.
Even their after sales service is very good.
All in all, a great little package!…
Nicely packaged product I would buy again, but as you can see from the picture the instructions do not match the content. I would be nice to include information for all the possible seeds you could recieve.
I can see that this item is currently unavailable, and I am guessing that this is just because demand is outstripping supply, so hopefully Urban Turnip will get that sorted soon. Why the high demand? – product is worth six stars if that was possible. There are more seeds for every variety than you need to start a wee family of bonsai trees. All of the equipment is there, and just follow the instructions.
My experience so far? – purchase was followed up by an email offering extra help and information. I’m a complete beginner and started with Scots pine as advised. Have discarded 2 from the warming bowl (non-viable), and planted 6. The experience is already worth what I paid, and I still have the other (more difficult) varieties to try out, using the stratification kit included.
I’d like to edit with updates and photos as the bonsai journey continues if anyone else is interested?
Edit 1. Scots Pine – lost patience and planted all the seeds – now have 7 (SEVEN) Scots pine seedlings up in the pot. Also planted all of the Dawn Redwood seeds at one go – and I have one Dawn Redwood seedling growing, waiting for his friends:) The more difficult ones with stratification required will need to wait until this weekend . Really enjoying this pack.
Well it’s been a week since I’ve planted and have had one little Scott’s pine pop up. Some of the other tree seeds look like they are starting to mould. I maybe adding too much water. But still early days one more week and I will transfer any ones that aren’t germinated into the fridge as the instructions state. A good amount of seeds in each packet I still have some left over for a second and maybe third try. Will update review at a later date.
Update 4th January 2018. 3 more Scott’s pine seeds germinated and are growing fast one looks droopy but that might be because it’s still attached to the seed. I’m yet to see cherry and Judas germinate. They are both in the fridge now.. the red Maple and fern seeds all went mouldy, I’m not sure why.. it could be something I done wrong. I would advise not using the lollypop sticks as they seem to be a home for mould, use a sticky label on a plastic straw instead. Will continue updates throughout too see if any survive. Update. Three Judas seeds germinated in the fridge, I accidently killer one so leaves me with 2 seedlings. Lol.
At the time of writing this it is still too early for any of the seeds to have grown, so this review wil mainly be talking about the contents of the box.
I have had several Bonsai tree kits in the past and can honestly say that this is one of the best I’ve seen so far. The box is strong and well printed, it clearly shows the types of trees you can grow with this set (Red maple, scots pine, judas tree, wild orchid, dawn redwood).
Inside the box you get a pack of each type of seed, mini growing pots, soil pellets, plant markers + pencil, plastic bags, tools, and an instruction guide.
The quality of this set is very high, nothing feels overly cheap, you even get far more seeds than you will actuall need, so if you fail at growing anything the first time, or want to try growing more, you will have the oportunity to save some seeds for later use.
The instructions are printed in a small book and have been written in multiple languages, it is written clearly and everything is easy to follow.
As I mentioned at the start it’s too early for my seeds to have grown yet, but I for the price I would recommend this set if it’s something you have been wanting to try out.
This is an initial review as I can’t comment yet on whether these plants have actually successfully grown. The kit itself is lovely, it gives you everything you need and a nice clear instruction manual. My only criticism is that it wasn’t as clear as I would have liked in terms of how many seeds of each plant to use, etc. (although this is coming from a novice so maybe I’m just being an idiot!)
Everything else is really great though, the customer service has been great. The package arrived promptly and I’ve received a couple emails from Caroline (the seller) asking whether it arrived okay and whether I’ve had any problems.
Currently giving it 4 stars as I don’t know whether it works yet, will update once I’ve had some progress!
Great kit, comes with everything you need, instructions are clear. You get 5 types of seed, and plenty of them. Have been growing now for a couple of months, I didn’t plant all of my seeds initially but I’ve now got 5 solid saplings, and another shoot on the way. Three species are growing and it’s so interesting to see how different they are.
Update – A few months later and still having a lot of fun experimenting, after a few dead saplings I’ve got a good feel for how to grow the plants so they don’t die, and what soils to use etc.
Update – 2 Redwood seeds lived on and are about 6″ big now with some big stems coming off, 3 mountain pine are growing nicely but took a while to come out of the seed and I have 2 red maple growing!
Hopefully they survive the winter
Cherry dogwood doesn’t seem to be doing anything unfortunately which i’m fairly sad about since it was the one I wanted the most
Good pack, came with 5 different seed types with plenty in – my redwood seeds have already started to germinate after 2ish weeks just waiting on the others now!
Ok so, considering growing any form of plant actually takes time, I cannot actually say if the seeds will germinate or are indeed the “advertised” seeds (in the past I have ordered from a different supplier and I ended up with a mini pepper plant )……
Anyways, For the money I am really impressed with not only the quality but also the items you receive, such as the mini clippers etc.
All seem to be of a good standard and not likely to fall apart after a week of use, also you get half a dozen of each seed type which is helpful……
All in all I’m happy with the purchase and look forward to having some nice bonsai trees around the house
Bought this item and it arrived very quickly (prime next day). It comes in a nice little box that would make a great gift for someone who is into gardening. I bought mine for myself as I have been reading about bonsai and wanted to give it a go. I’m looking forward to watching these seeds become trees over the next few years. The cutting tools that come with it seem to be a really nice quality but obviously I won’t be needing them for a LONG while. I like that it has 5 different tree species in it and this is one of the reasons I bought it because I couldn’t decided what species to grow. The instruction leaflet is a great starting place and basically says what to do with the seeds to get them to germinate. I think the purchase of a separate book or internet research is definitely needed if you are a beginner like me, in order to learn about the ongoing care of bonsai trees.
My mother loved gardening, and I would always marvel at how she revelled in watching plants grow from scratch. She passed away recently and when I saw this I thought of her and I wanted to try it myself. I am definitely a novice, but the different components all come in neat little packages with a very succinct and clearly explained instruction booklet, that even I could easily understand. I decided I would start with the Red Maple seeds as it reminded me of my recent trip to Japan and it was very easy to follow the instructions and sow the seeds. I will now wait patiently (or at least try to!) for the next few weeks to see the seeds germinate and can’t wait to see my beautiful Bonsai tree created from scratch. Then I will move onto the Dawn Redwood, Judas Tree, Mountain Pine and Cornelian Cherry Dogwood and create a little tree for each room in our house. I also have other friends whom I will be thoroughly recommending this product to, as it is so easy to follow and a brilliant idea for a gift. In fact I wish I had seen this before Christmas as It would have been a wonderful gift for a lot of people that I know!
Would have given 5 but the box was slightly ripped and it was brought as a Christmas present. But it does come excellently presented so makes a good gift even for the novice of green fingers as it comes with a step by step guide.
