We’ve had a log burner for a few years and kindling is expensive to buy compared to the volue of wood you get. This device is a safer and more controlled way of making kindling so I was keen to try it.

It’s quite solid , and comes with everything you need including a short and long handle to adjust the amount of leverage.

The main issue with a device like this is the cutting power. It clearly states it’s not for hardwood and after testing it I agree – you need an initial impact on hardwood to split it which this device can’t really do as you need to hold the log in position , so it would be no safer than an axe ! It cuts softwoods ok , so you need to make sure that’s what you have.

It comes with 4 bolt screws , so you may need to adjust your mounting method and it will need to be very securely fixed.

There are other styles of kindling makers out there which provide a safe cutting solution , but can manage hardwoods , however these need a heavy lump hammer. This is a good option if you only need softwood kindling and want to just lean on it to cut.

So this kindling maker is probably best fixed to a lower bench if you need the extra force/pressure of your body weight.

Firstly use softwood as hardwood logs will be a lot harder to split on this.

Secondly, there is a trick to using it and that is the move the log or wood up and down the various ridges to get the right force you need at the time..
I.e doesn’t work vertical? Then move it to one nearer the handle so it’s virtually horizontal and that should work.

We tried it on some general softwood as we havent got our winter logs in yet and it was fairly easy to use.

The machine is heavy duty and sturdy but this is really for more of a safe kindling cutting than using an axe. Or if you don’t have the strength to use an axe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Takes time but safer for kindling making
