ND Filters are a MUST and having a CPL is always recommended having both in the same frame is even better! My life is lived in 4K 24fps (sometimes 60) and an ISO NEVER above 400 period.
Here is what I like about these ND/CPL filters:
Fixed ND filters that are correct stops that I do not have to worry about from scene to scene that does the job and allow me to have the natural motion blur where life is real.
CPL makes things better in the long run in the final product, ND & CPL coupled together makes life easier.
Before getting this set I was stacking and for those of you reading this we all know how the Pocket 3 loves stacked filters (said with complete sarcasm) so for me these filters are a great convenience item that work almost perfectly. So for that alone I highly recommend but there are a couple of things that I have noticed or been told about that you may want to consider.
Something I was told These do not work overly well with the wide-angle lens. This is not an issue for me but another friend who is running the same gear complains that the CPL does not offer full use with the wide lens. I do not know and I have not tried it so I suggest a little research if you want them for wide use.
Something that I have noticed, the CPL is harder to “tune” in this kit of filters. I could not get it dialed in enough to make it viable and ended up pulling the filter off and going back to a stacked ND and CPL. It has happened a couple of times.
All in all, this is a great kit that does the job that I need it to do although not always perfectly.
Ok so with all of this, I want to offer you a tip to make using the CPL a better experience…. Quit trying to make the CPL adjustments with your fingers stop it now. How many times have you gotten the gimbal alert while you are fidgeting around with the wheel? Get a soft-tipped stylus for a tablet and use that to turn the wheel. You’ll get used to it in no time at all and your end results along with your gimbal will thank you.
The overall quality of the product is satisfactory, and it functions as designed. However, there is an issue with compatibility when trying to use the lens on the factory wide-angle lens. This is because the polarity of the magnets prevents it from sitting properly on the wide-angle lens.
Hard to compare as I haven’t used any others. But it’s of decent recordable quality, a good mix in the combo pack, seems scratch resistant, and is well packaged with a good case. A recommended buy minus a few cons:
– Will not work with a lens protector on your screen as the filter is too thick to give the gimbal enough clearance to close and lock when powered down when attached on top of a lens protector. If you have one, you’ll have to remove the filter first before powering down
– The magnet is possibly slightly better than the one that comes with the Pocket 3, but they still aren’t great. Don’t believe the reviews, these are not strong enough to have when mounted to a car or bike, or running. Jolts will knock the lens off or out of place
– They can build condensation up on the inside. I think this goes back to the magnets. Micro jolts are likely letting in moisture through the magnetic seal from the environment that can get trapped. I’ve found myself having to take it off and wipe it down a bit more frequently than I’d like in high humidity or cold climates
I will go with 3.5 stars, rounding up to 4.
I was a bit curious when buying these CPL ND filters how well they would work, since the Pocket 3 lens is 20mm focal length and it is well known that polarizers are a risk on wide angle lenses for getting uneven light or vignette type effects.
The polarizer effect is indeed challenging to manage (as with all wide lenses) and can darken only parts of the sky in some angles looking similar to a vignette, but polarization is still the right choice for some shots where reflections must be managed. I think I might prefer a separate set of just ND filters in many scenes, but there are definitely cases where ND and polarizer are needed at once. I will experiment with stacking of a regular ND with the PL only filter, and if that works I may move to adding PL only when needed rather than trying to use ND+PL combo filters.
Overall these ND-PL filers are a decent value and do the basic job they are intended for, but I wish there was an ND8 and no ND64 in this package, as I cannot imagine using ND64 except in rare occasions, but often want ND8, ND16, or ND32 (3,4,5 stops of light reduction would be more useful to me than 4,5,or 6 that is included).
The label text for the ND factor / stops of light filteres should be larger. I cannot easily read the NDx labels without effort (staring at the filters with corrected vision). The NEEWER logo text is larger than the functional labels you actually need to be able to read to choose the proper filter, which is a bit silly.
If you have a glass screen protector on the pocket 3 lens, make sure to remove it before using these. I found out the hard way that some of those super thin protectors have a polarized UV coating that shows up as color banding with the polarizer stacked on top. They also reduce the magnet strength of filters grabbing the lens, even though they are extremely thin glass. Since this and all other filter packages usually have a UV protective magnetic snap on filter, that can fill in for a glass lens protector.
This is a value pack to include a good sett of filters for OSMO Pocket 3. As always, I’m amazed by NEEWER quality. It’s comprehensive with 6 pack: UV CPL ND16/PL ND32/PL ND64/PL ND256/PL.
The filter are built well, very impressive, seamless combination of quality glass and sturdy aluminium alloy frame. They are perfectly machined and feel very professional. the magnetic attachment is indeed helpful, making installing and removing filters a breeze. The filters stay in place stably and work effectively.
The image quality is stunning. They are great overall and I’m a happy man to spend little and get fantastic results out of that. The filter set deserves 5 out of 5* and I would recommend this kit, 100%.
Good set of filters. I do wish the filter case was a little more compact to fit inside the Creator Combo bag, but its a tad too big. The filter case is nicely designed. The filters hold in place using magnets and also the lid is magnetic. Fits perfect on the Pocket 3 camera. Magnet is also very strong and it’s never going to fall off under normal use. Still haven’t had good weather to fully test the dual cpl/nd filter to see if there is any vignetting around the corners, but so far image looks good.
In my video you’ll see how easy these filters are to apply. I hope magnetic filters make more of an appearance across other DJI products as I also have many of their drones.
The case itself is magnetic as well so your filters are held securely in place and protected by the foam insert.
I’ve uploaded two photos to show the effectiveness of the CPL aspect. You can prove something is polarised as it’ll effect the visibility of most computer monitors. CPLs are directional and you may need to adjust them through the day to counter the reflections and glare on water and glass, so keep this in mind and adjust as necessary.
I’m looking forward to using these in two weeks in Madeira where there will be significantly more sunlight than here in the UK.
