I’ve been using this to connect an old Panasonic HC-X920 video camera to my Apple Mac mini (M1). I use it for work-from-home video calls through Microsoft Teams. It works very well. No driver was required and there’s no configuration – just connect it up and forget about it. It’s always there when I need it and no fussing with it.
It’s probably over-specced for this main requirement, since I think Teams downsamples my video stream before sharing it with colleagues. Perhaps, one of these days, I’ll be tempted to record my “talking head” video next time I’m using Camtasia to record an instructional video and be able to take better advantage of the higher resolution output this device offers.
Do I recommend it? Yes I do.
Using this with my GoPro for a handcam for streaming, using 1080p60fps, works an absolute charm. No delay needed in OBS. Quality looks identical to that of an Elgato HD60, but with zero latency.
I ordered the Newhope HDMI to USB/ USBC 3.0 (1080P HD) Capture Card with the intention of converting some VHS footage to share digitally.
I got a little frustrated as initially there was no audio and I had screen stretch, however my distinctly more tech-savvy nephew was able to capture footage quickly without issue.
The 23.99 pricetag represents good value for money.
This works great with OBS on Mac.
Shows up as ‘USB3.0 Capture’ and worked straight out of the box.
Only tested with a 1080p60 source, but will do 2160p30 also.
Excellent little device and highly recommended.
I purchased a USB video capture device back in 2021 which has a lower specification than this device – I am not sure why they call these “cards” as the is the old PCMCIA standard these are definitely external devices
Since then there has been a general chipset improvement within these devices giving better image quality for the frame rates.
I tested via OBS (software) and all performed as expected
My original capture device cost about 16 back in late 2021, so this at just over 20 seems a little more expensive however it does have a nicer look and feel about it
Images show how received and what was in the box
Note: The standard sized UK plug/adapter is used as a size reference
A budget video capture card that works OK Ideal if this is the first venture into capturing
Newhope Video Capture Card, HDMI to USB/USB C 3.0 Capture Card, 1080P HD
The capture card works well. With its attached USB adapter, it can be plugged into the standard USB-A ot smaller USB-C sockets. However, always use as socket rated as USB3 or higher as that is faster.
It works as a basic video card, and for the price is good value, especially if this is the first time you’re trying video capture out. If you want something for more professional, you will probably need to get a more higher spec (and more expensive!) device.
The device you want to record from needs to be connected to the Capture card via a HDMI cable, presumably the one that you would need to connect the device to a monitor or TV. The video that you are capturing will be displayed on the monitor of the PC that you have the capture card connected to. A downside is that there is no additional HDMI out socket on the card, so you will not be able to watch the video on a different device while recording it. This may or may not be a problem for you.
Bought this capture card to connect a Sky Stream Puk to my laptop and did the job superbly. Most suprising of all is the capture card barely gets warm even after long periods of usage. Great sign of good quality electronic components inside the device.
A great, cheap video capture card.
I loaned my last one out to my workplace to replace a missing one that was used for green-screen videos (connecting to a HD camera and using Open Broadcast Studio with its Chromakey filter). This one was a perfect replacement for that task, but also others.
I used it to capture from a Steam Deck and it worked perfectly first time, and I even had my phone (using the USB Camera Pro app) connected to it over USB-C while I captured the HDMI of the Steam Deck with it and it worked perfectly.
You need to expect slight lag between the live image and the recorded / streamed image with these, that’s inevitable, but it works great for recording (I used Shotcut, USB Camera Pro, and other free software) and even using the captured HDMI for other purposes (like green-screen or the video image in Zoom etc. calls).
Can’t fault it, and for the price it’s amazing.
This device seemed a little too good to be true at this price but it does exactly what it says and gives HDMI video and audio in the clear. The OBS software proved a little problematic for me when it came to audio. My windows 11 system could monitor the audio coming from the source but OBS would not record it no matter how many tweaks I made. Nevertheless, this is not the fault of the device which decrypted HDMI video/audio signals on the fly as if they weren’t there!
I got this for looking at capturing output from various HDMI sources. Works a treat at 1080p with picture quality virtually indentical to the source. At higher resolutions upto 4k it will scale down with some quality loss which is to be expected.
Installation is plug’n’play, Windows picked it up in a few moments and it was available in OBS and Windows inbuilt camera app.
So far during initial usage, this capture card has enabled me to connect my cameras (Olympus PENs and OM-Ds) to my Windows PC and Macbook to use
I plan to try connecting my Nintendo Switch soon, but so far in usage I have had no issues so far. Will report back with updated findings
This was I think one of my best purchases. This capture card is small yet durable, and came in a plastic wrapped box, which helped stop any damage occurring to the box whilst shipping. You get the capture card device & instructions manual in the box.
Now for the device itself, it comes with a USB-A adapter which is super handy, as it allows me to connect it straight into my PC, and also has USB-C as the main plug, for faster speeds and for other devices like my MacBook. It has a fast 60hz pickup speed, which is plenty for most cameras and devices, and works well with my switch. It also has video and audio capture, so I can listen to the audio coming from my camera and switch and also record it. The software to use was free to download for my PC with instructions in the booklet. It was a simple plug device and connect to the software to start using it.
It is small and compact, and very useful for travel.
Got this to capture footage from my various retro consoles and computers (that I already have HDMI conversions for) for my online blog. Really simple yet effective device that simply plugs into a USB 3.0 socket and can capture full HD footage including sound to pretty much any video capture software.
The instructions suggest OBS Studio but I used it with Bandicam and Premier Elements without issue. Just make sure you select ‘USB 3.0 Capture Device’ for both the video and audio source and you should be golden.
Super little device that takes up next to no space to store when not in use. Definitely recommend.
This capture card (card?) is used with my mirrorless Sony (An A7R3, so a few generations old now) for the odd time when I do live events and I need good quality with background blur done naturally. For this purpose, it’s pretty good. There is still a very slight delay despite it being USB C, though in the manual it also suggests you need a fast computer to help minimise – I’m using an M1 MacBook Pro Max, so it’s no slouch. There is less lag than with my last capture card though.
The delay is about half a second, but still noticeable (only to the person recording). It might not sound like much, but in practice, but it does mean you need audio monitors and to mic up from your camera so that everything runs OK sound wise – lips in sync and no echos.
My camera limits me to HD even though it’s 4K capable, it just can’t output 4K over HDMI, so I can’t really push the card. That said I’d never require 4K for streaming anyway, HD is plenty for current requirements.
With USB C I was hoping to remove much of the lag – it’s better but still noticeable, but that may not matter in your use case.
Got this to capture video from my old computers C64, ZX Spectrum BBC etc. via my HDMI convertor.
Does the job well enough for these old computers with a lower refresh rate so I am happy with this.
Connected this to my computer and without any driver install it just worked, appeared as a camera I could select. I didn’t have a 4k video source to try out with it, but my 1080p worked just fine using the USB C connector. It has a handy integrated adapter should you wish to use USB-A instead with a long enough retaining strap that it doesn’t interfer with getting the USB C connector in even to crowded areas.
It feels good quality, with a nice metal case to the adapter. Overall a capable capture device!
This product is really good. I was skeptical if it would be of much quality given the low price of 21.99 (at the time of review), but it is actually a little gem of a device.
So, let’s talk about the boxing. This is probably what made me go “bleh”. Sorry, but when you use a Romanesque font on a high-tech product, it just screams “we tried to make this look high-end and failed to hire someone who knows about typography”. But the odd thing is a really good font is used around the rest of the packaging. I know the box is just a box, but I thought from a review standpoint, it was worth a mention.
Inside, you get the product and an instruction manual. It’s worth a read, but take it with a pinch of salt. To be fair, it’s plug-and-play. They want you to use a 3rd party software OBS to make good use of the device. Again, fair enough. If software exists already, why reinvent the wheel? So, the manual gets you started, but the pictures do not necessarily match the current version of the software.
The device has a metallic body with an indicator light to show when it is active. I watched some streams using my Fire TV Stick to test out how usable the product is. The picture quality is fantastic, reaching 1920×1080 at 60fps as advertised. The sound is equally of good quality. I may have been being over-scrutinizing, but there could have been a few points where the audio felt a few ms out of sync. But I do feel that was me trying to find a problem and mentally making one than there actually being one. I mean, for that price, surely this product had to have some form of issue, right? Fortunately, not.
My actual future use for this product will be to enable me to Twitch stream gameplay on my Commodore Amiga. Hardly in need of 1080p, but if you need a decent, pocket-friendly capture card, this product is a very strong option.
It is about 15 years since I owned a Vid Cap card and back then they were quite bulky devices, so I was initially a bit dubious this would be up to the job? as all the electronic wizardry is packaged into such a small casing.
However there is no need to worry as the quality of the output is completely satisfactory. Latency is very
low making it great for streaming games, which it copes with ease.
Would have liked an additional HDMI output to be able to stream to two sources simultaneously but still this is great value and easy to setup and use for the price.
The capture card, on Windows 11 is a case of plug and play. You just insert the device, it is recognised straight away and you attached your input source and off you go. The manual provides brief instruction on how to get it working using an open source application so even it you have never used this type of device before you should be able to get it working. As advertised this capture card works with 4k sources but the video itself can only be captured in 1080p. The unit itself is well made with a metal body and braided cable. Handily the connection cable has a USB-C > USB-A adaptor it built into the connection cable.
I’ve used this with an Apple M1 and M3 computer to feed the output of my mirrorless camera in to the computer. In effect I can make the camera a super high quality input for Zoom, as well as capture the video feed in QuickTime Player.
No drivers or software were needed, I just plugged it directly in to a spare USB C on the computer and it was picked up and worked straight away. I had to choose the connection from the list in Zoom and QuickTime instead of their defaults.
The instructions explain how to add this as an input for OBS should you want to expand your live streaming capability.
Thank you for reading my review for the Newhope Video Capture Card, 4K HDMI to USB/USB C 3.0 Capture Card, 1080P HD 60fps Live and Record Video Audio Grabber for Gaming, Streaming, Teaching, Video Conference
This device will capture video from a HDMI source and display it on your phone, laptop or desktop computer via USB-C connector.
The software for PC is free to download and use. Instructions are provided in the manual. I guess VLC would work too. Uncertain about mobile phones, I do not think that they are in the same league as a desktop computer for video capture.
I found the software was fairly intuitive to setup with the USB 3.0 Capture Device. No delay with connectivity, just plug it in to your PC and add the device within the software and you can record from your video source immediately without delay.
I tested with the default resolution from the original source device and tried different audio quality modes. I was pleased with the quality output of the recordings. File sizes will increase if you adjust to better quality decoding options in the settings including lossless audio.
External DVD or Bluray players, games consoles and other multimedia boxes output just fine. Test recordings played back well but you will have to keep an eye on audio playback, plenty of tweaking options in the software.
Certainly you could spend hundreds of pounds on high end video capture hardware if you are perhaps making a motion picture. If not then you will not be disappointed with the low price today.
Highly recommended.
I was skeptical, I have a couple of HDMI capture dongles which I use with various cameras and on each occasion they have cost well over 100quid even for a mediocre one.
Seeing this listed at under 30, I didn’t expect much when coming to review it however I was pleasantly surprised by the results.
The video and image attached were both taken on my PC using the capture dongle itself connected to a DSLR camera, I literal just plugged it in, it worked and it did this for 1/6th of the price of other such HDMI capture devices.
The hardest part about this is reading the instructions once that’s done with it was simplistic and easy to use.
I used it multiple times on my PC without any issues and it did record in decent quality as expected.
I tested it on DTP work video streaming and live gaming without any issues.
The resolution of 1920 1080 and 60 fps work perfect for me after setting it from the OBS settings.
In order to enable the audio: from windows search > change system sounds > recording > USB 3.0 capture > listen > turn on listen to this device > apply
Then you can go fullscreen by right clicking and simply selecting the fullscreen option.
And to share screen with audio from discord just download OBS virtual camera and start it from OBS.
Overall, it is totally worth the price. If you are not a streamer and just want to chill just like me, you will love this product.
I wanted to take advantage of the new features on my iPad Pro and display HDMI content on my iPad screen.
I was very quickly able to connect the device to the iPad and plug in my mini PC. The picture is really clear and runs at 60hz really means retro gaming works flawlessly.
Highly recommended for this application!
Update: the seller contacted me and send me a new one and I can say that it works with no issues. I think the one I had must have been faulty or something. I recommend this product good value for money.
