I’m using this with a MacBook Air for an external mouse and printer, and it works well. I had hoped to use it with a 12″ MacBook, which only has one USB-C port – it’s designed for travel, not as a dedicated workstation – but I can’t use it with this if I want to charge the laptop at the same time as the built-in USB-C port is not a power through port – more expensive and newer hubs – typically the ones with HDMI and network ports etc, have this feature, so I wouldn’t recommend it for use with a laptop with only one USB-C port. However, as a cost-effective way of adding additional USB-A ports to a laptop of Mac Mini, it’s a great choice.
This slim USB-C adapter comes with a 2ft cable and has four super-fast USB 3.0 ports that transfer data at 5Gbps, much quicker than USB 2.0.
It allows you to connect things like USB flash drives, hard drives, keyboards, mouse, speakers, and game controllers to your laptop, speeding up data transfer and making work faster.
The adapter also provides a stable power supply of 5V/2A, ensuring devices work smoothly and efficiently.
I use this with an iMac that only has USB C. I have been a Mac user forever and have loads of older USB devices and found those little USB to C adapters are a bit useless. This, on the other hand, is great: it sits on my desk and two printers, a scanner, a CD/DVD reader/writer all plug into it, leaving the other three USB C ports available.
I was unsure whether the DVD writer would work because it draws quite a lot of power (for a USB device), but it’s fine – works beautifully. No issues using the inkjet and laser printers and scanner works perfectly.
I sometimes use the USB C port on the device for an OTG thumb drive, a card reader and a portable SSD drive – it’s much more convenient than reaching behind the iMac and scratching around for the tiny USB C sockets.
The device itself is well made, feels substantial and robust and is an all-metal construction. The longer than usual cable is very handy for my set-up – where I’m not using it on a laptop or otherwise carrying it around.
Great little device.
My search for my perfect USB hub continues. This is one of the better ones, but not quite there for me – but don’t let me put you off, let me review…
First up, it’s presented extremely well. The packaging is really good, an excellent first impression. It’s clear Novoo want to stand out from other manufacturers with similar offerings.
The hub is nicely made, however – unlike most nowadays – it’s a matte plastic instead of the grey metal you might expect. This means it’s lighter than most, so would be easy to toss in a bag and not worry about (although at this size we’re talking about a handful of grammes). The integrated lead is long but not too long – a practical length. On my PC I get USB 3 speeds as expected.
So why four stars, and not five? The USB C port. It’s for power, and nothing else. Three USB A and a working USB C would be more useful (to me at least) than four USB A and a power port. However, if you want to turn a single USB C port on a computer into four USB A ports, this will do you well.
I have a Lenovo laptop that comes with a basic USB Type-C data port (non-Thunderbolt), but the port can be made much more useful if expanded with a simple hub like this one. Important points to note:
1. This has 4 genuine USB 3.0 ports (I have tested data speeds by copying from different flash drives in different sockets and get consistent high speed rates for my USB 3.0 flash drives)
2. Has a USB Type-C pass-through port but it only seems to work for charging (not data)
3. One of the best features is the long connection cable (+60cm). The USB-C port on many laptops is often positioned on the same side as power, HDMI, USB Type-A port and headphone socket and the small area on this side can get cluttered. Many hubs have a very short cable but with this long cable you can plug the hub in on the left (for example) and bring the hub around the back of the screen to the other side where it rests nicely flush against the other laptop side, and all ports nicely exposed. (It fits so well I think Lenovo should offer it as an official hardware upgrade for the IdeaPad range)
When I attached this it was recognized instantly by windows 11 (as a “Generic SuperSpeed USB Hub” in Device Manager) and I have kept it attached for a couple of days now, multiple reboots, several USB 3.0 flash devices and two different external USB HDDs, and no problems encountered whatsoever (unlike with my previous hub which would regularly not recognize multiple flash devices attached and often would require removing and reinserting to recognize even 1 device)
Highly recommended for a simple way to have multiple USB 3.0 port expansion on a modern laptop.
And there is one final bonus surprise, on my Lenovo IdeaPad, the BIOS recognizes USB drives plugged into this hub so you can boot your favourite Linux distros like Ubuntu at full usb 3.0 speeds. (I was able to boot Ubuntu even in secure boot mode)
This is a USB C to 4 port USB 3 hub with a USB C connection that is there only to provide DC power to USB 2/3 devices that cannot be powered from a USB 3 output alone (think spinning hard drives). It generally retails fro 9.99 so is definitely at the cheaper end of the market. This is reflected in the plastic case and very lightweight construction, as opposed to the traditional metal enclosures. It does, however, appear to be well made, from good quality plastics so should last well. All four inputs are USB 3: many hubs have a mixture of USB 3 and the rather pointless USB 2 so they have spent the money where it matters most, which i like.
My only complaint is that the (longer than normal) cable is rather stiff which can put a strain on the socket it is plugged into (though USB C is a solid connection) and tends to cause the very light hub to sit where the cable wants it to go rather than where you put it. A more flexible, maybe braided, cable would be a big improvement here. Still its smart, well made and provides 4 ports of expansion at a very good price. Just fix that cable and it would be perfect. At this price, still highly recommended though.
