I have a laptop that doesn’t have the cd drive and lots of photos on CDs I think I might transfer on flash drives but for the time being this works great. It is a bit slower than I expected, might be the CDs are a bit scratched since they are at least 10 years old. Haven’t tried blue ray as I don’t own anything like that, but with the right software my wedding video works so it is basically what I need. It is cheap and slow but it does the job I need. Has usb A cable and USB C one. I don’t have a usb C port on my laptop again because it is an old model so can’t comment on speeds on that either.
It is basically just plug and play if you have the software to read the files on the CDs DVDs.

I’m only going to use this infrequently and when I have used to it since purchase it has worked to my satisfaction. I’m not someone who is up on all the technology but it was easy to set up, easy to use and does its job as far as I’m concerned.

This CD drive is a good quality product. It easy to setup and easy to use. It’s plug and play. Built quality is not very impressive but it does work.
    It’s quite lightweight as well.

So here’s the thing, it’s a cheap external DVD writer and it works as intended for reading DVD disks, but I can’t speak to the ability to write a DVD, although it’s technically not sold as a writer.
Out of curiosity I opened the drive and could see this is a used DVD writer from an old laptop. The “manufacturer” had placed there own sticker over the original manufacturer label so I took that off to reveal the drive is a Samsung DVD writer and I know it’s from an old laptop due to the dust under the new label.
As for performance the drive is connected via a USB 1.1 to SATA controller, even though there is a USB-C connector for your laptop or PC, so don’t expect any blisteringly fast transfer speeds.

Basic CD drive to use with laptop. Has attached cables with USB and USBc plugs. The cable stores neatly under the unit so you don’t loose the lead.
    Works plug and play
Have used it for ripping mp3s to laptop successfully.

A simple plug and play to get going which is always good. You do need to add an app for playing of blu-ray but as I don’t have any there’s no worries there for me.
It was simple to play and then burn some of my photos to disc so that’s good.
For the price a decent enough piece of kit, especially as so many of us have laptops with no CD player built in!

Does exactly what I need it to do.

Sleek design and built in space to tuck wires away without losing them. Can be pluged into a computer using a standard USB or USB-C connenction, which is very handy at work switching between a traditional desktop computer and the department chromebooks.

The DVD drive is easy to set up – simply plug in and off you go. Can play DVD disks easily. I have found it can be a bit noisy when playing DVDs, but the sound of the DVD drive reading the disk eventually fades into white noise and can be ignored.

For 7.99 – definetely worth it.

Being a bit long in the tooth, I still have media on CD and DVD that I want to access but as tech progresses, disc drives seem all too rare. This was a perfect solution for my problem and at under 10 Aat the time of reviewing, it’s a decent price.

For me, the device was pretty much plug n play, just insert the cable and windows took care of the installation (win10).

The drive isn’t super fast, but I think that this may just be that too used to the speed of USB-C. The main point was that I can now.access my older media and that makes it invaluable to me.

Overall if like me you have new devices with no optical drive and you don’t want to install one to your system, this is a perfect solution.

Brilliant for playing some of my old dvds; as most pc cases do not have dvd drives anymore. Can be a bit dodgy at times but always works in the end.

Does the job, and for nice and cheap. It’s very no nonsense.

    Would recommend

This item was supplied to me free of charge through Amazon’s Vine programme, however this in no way influences my review, which is intended to be both impartial and informative for potential purchasers.

Whilst there are few occasions these days when you need to use a CD/DVD ROM with a computer, it’s still handy to have one when you need to access DVDs on the go and haven’t (or can’t) ripped them to the hard drive.

This drive is very solidly made (which does make it heavy, so not quite so good for portability) and really looks the business. Very helpfully, the manufacturer has built the cable into the machine with a recess for storage, and it comes with both USB-A and C connectors, making it widely compatible.

It is genuinely plug and play, with no need to download software for me, and although it states that it is for Windows operating systems I was able to use it perfectly well on a Macbook.

The one negative for me, is that it was a little temperamental and clunky in operation – discs have to be pressed very firmly in place and absolutely level otherwise it simply won’t read them. It’s also louder than my other DVD drives when spinning, but it’s a small price to pay for having something cheap and easily carried with the laptop.

My desktop pc doesn’t have a cd drive, so this item just ticked that box nicely. The price is very reasonable for this drive and it’s basically plug and play. That’s it. A nice touch with the connection lead being attached to the unit, but I just wish it was the slightest bit longer, as you’re literally just getting about 4″ of lead. I suppose it’s more geared towards being hooked up to a laptop.
Quiet operation, as shown in the video I’ve uploaded, and the drive opens cautiously, which I like.
    Recommended and a great price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great, nicely designed.

I suspected it would be a DVD drive – I don’t think laptop-style CD drives have been made for a million years now – and my hunch was correct. The case is a generic one for the drives to be installed into (which is why so many of them look the same when you look at listings), so there’s two sides to look at separately – the case and the drive mechanism.

The case is fine. Having the lead curled into the bottom is handy but with these things I worry about damaging the cord, and prefer having a socket instead. (That’s just me.) The plastic feels solid and decent quality.

The drive is identified by Windows as being an HP drive, which is a good company in terms of build quality, and so should last a long time. As it comes, the DVD region is set to Region 1, and we’re in Region 2, so depending on DVD player software you might have it complain. (Pro tip: use VLC like me, and both regions and unskippable screens will be a thing of the past.)

I’ve not tried burning any discs because this is 2024 and it’s been a very long time since I’ve bought blank discs!

So, pretty well priced; good quality drive mechanism; nice case. Not disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just CDs, this is a not-at-all-bad DVD burne

Does the job as intended but it is an older model Blu-Ray drive which means it won’t be getting firmware updates for newer titles.

Sometimes I have to unplug and plug in again to get MacOS to recognise the drive but that might be an issue with the laptop, not been able to test it with a Windows PC. When it finally works, it rips as it should and burns as it should. No failures yet but it is a little on the slow side.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThe drive is well made and looks more expensive than it was and functions really well. I had some difficulties setting it up as it did not seem to work with the BluRay player installed on my laptop. This was remedied by installing the recommended software. The downside to this is the impression given is the software is free ad infinitum but it very much looks like it is only a free trial, and ultimately it has to be purchased. I will only know if this is the case when I try to use it again. Since my use of the item is infrequent I will not be purchasing the software but will look for a free alternative or workaround with my existing software. If this had not been the case I would have happily given the drive 5 stars.

Once installed to extention cable from back desktop USB port, the bluray writer works superbly. It would be helpful if cable from unit to computer was at least two feet in length.
