Having bought new laptops a few years ago, the one thing missing was an optical drive. I realise the desire for smaller, lighter, more manageable devices, but I’ve missed having a disc drive (at the time of purchase, it seemed like a reasonable sacrifice).

This one is a perfect replacement! It’s nicely made, quiet, and quick. It works perfectly with my MSI gaming laptop, and means I can once again play those disc based games I had long thought I’d have to pay for again on Steam, etc. And with the release of Fallout on Prime, who doesn’t want to get back into that world again?!

I didn’t realise quite how much I’d missed having a disc drive until getting this one. I am a happy chappy! Very highly recommended.

I always try to write an honest and unbiased review of all the products I order. My reviews are only my opinion, of course, but I hope they help.

From the product description you won’t be surprised to learn that this looks highly generic, both in the packaging and the drive itself. However, build quality is above average for a drive of this price and function.

It isn’t very loud, even when burning discs. You certainly won’t notice it during playback of CDs or DVDs. There is also none of the pointless clicking and clunking that drives used to do, this is lightweight and efficient compared to those clunky old internal drives.

The main update over cheaper drives is that this comes with extra USB ports (3 x USB 2.0 and 1 x USB 3.0) and both SD and microSD card lots. So basically this is a CD/DVD burner plus USB hub, sort of like an all-in-one data access device.

The price is 27 at the time of review, which is reasonable considering what you get. There many similar devices available, so I would check amazon to see the competition. For the price I have to say this is a good purchase, as this is a useful addition to any desktop or laptop PC.

I am giving this four stars, if you can get it for 20 or less than it’s five stars.

CDs/DVDs have surely massively dropped in popularity from a few years ago but with a few useful one still around my place it is good to have a portable, easy to use and install unit as this one. Build quality appear to be good and I love the versatility of having a USB Hub also included and the neatly stored cable.

For less than 30 this does deserves full marks

This portable drive reads and writes CDs, DVDs (including +/-RW), making it compatible with a wide range of discs.
This drive offers both USB 3.0 and Type-C connections, Something most laptop and pcs have these days.
An added bonus of this drive is it features a memory card reader and has extra USB slots.
Its alsot extremely slim and very portable.

Like most modern machines, my desktop PC has no optical drive. I have an old full size external drive, but that has an external PSU, so is a faff to connect up when needed.

This tiny neat drive is a game changer. I just plugged it into a spare USBC socket, it was recognised by Windows and behaved as normal. I was able to read various old CD-Rs, DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs and copy what I needed to my harddrive. (I’m having a bit of a sort out of old stuff/backed up photos at the moment.)

I haven’t needed to try writing and discs so I can’t comment on that function.

I like the inclusion of the USB hub function. With modern laptops having so few USB ports, that could be useful.

    Review from my husband:

This is a really nice, stylish looking and super slimline CD/DVD burner. I remember back in the day these were a unicorn, and when you found one they cost a bloody fortune, oh how times have changed, you don’t even have to fit it into your computer now as it’s all USB!!! It burns and re-wites DVDs…who even does that now? It’s still good for 32 quid and as I say, it’s a very stylish compact device that can easily nestle unnoticed atop your PC tower, I just said tower…. yes I am old, but it works exactly like it should capably burning DVDs for whatever reason you would want to burn a DVD in this day and age. If you have legacy films and want to watch them, then this is great and if you want to back up Dreamcast or PSX titles then it’s really good too. It has memory card support which I’m not quite sure why they are there, it’s like saying ‘Wow, I’ve just got a DVD burner’ and you instantly make it obsolete by including SSD memory storage capability? but it does it all and it’s really nice to wander down Optical Drive Avenue, it made me smile. 5/5 thank you.

This is a great addition for anyone who, like me, has a computer with no physical drive. I haven’t really missed my DVD drive however I found some old home movie on some DVDs recently and wanted to put them on my hard drive.
This is a simple USB drive that plugged into my Macbook and was recognised immediately, no installation was required.

Within minutes I had transferred all my discs to the computer with zero fuss.
    Highly recommended.

This CD/DVD drive is nice, well made and good quality too. Very useful these days as the most of laptops comes without this option. Easy to use, just unpack and plug in. Has USB 3.0 port x1, USB 2.0 port x3, SD card reader port x1, TF card reader port x1 and a USB power cable port x1. Thank you

Great functional external drive, works perfectly fine. Really just wanted a nice simple product to read the odd DVD’s and CD’s I have around from yesteryear and no new PCs come with drives any more and I rarely need to use it anyway so its great for that.

Nice to have the couple of extra features like USB ports and card reader, I suppose if you travel with this is saves on an extra accessory.

Exactly what I needed, gets the job done. Would recommend.

This KADLUN external drive arrives attractively boxed, with an included Instruction booklet – and comes complete with a fitted Type C and USB 3.0 daisy-chained lead stored in a slot below the unit. The box also contains an optional USB power cable. I opted to test this unit on my MacMini in place of the Apple SuperDrive I currently use. It is equally compatible with Windows systems from Vista upwards.
Please note that this is a dedicated computer CD/DVD drive only and will NOT operate on TVs, on Car systems, tablets, phones – or with BluRay disks. These multi-function drives usually offer a varied range of features and functions – and that is the case here. Usually, such external drives have difficult power needs and, again, that proved to be the case here.
The Drive has four USB 2.0 sockets, plus slots to read TF and SD cards.. Once I had found a USB connection into my Mac which provided sufficient power to get the Drive operating (I ended up having to use the dedicated USB-jack plug lead) I tested it using CDs, DVDs, TF and SD data cards. The data cards worked faultlessly – and the drive read more than 90% of the USB thumb drives I tested in it.
Although not a state-of-the-art external drive, this unit is a stylish and useful addition to one’s desk. I especially liked the ‘closed book’ styling with the black ‘cover’ and silver edges. In use it did have several hiccups (at times it refused to recognise more than one connected item at a time) but I soon got used to working with it and I found it a good replacement for my ageing SuperDrive.

I requested this item so that I can put all my photos onto CDs.
Positives: Although its functionality is of prime importance, it’s also really nice to look at and is very streamlined. It arrived well packaged and protected in a box. Very simple and easy to use. Plenty of ports and an SD reader as well as a CD/DVD player. Very good value and has a long warranty.
    Negatives: None.
This is a really useful device and well worth the price.

This is great – my PC is a beast but the one thing it lacks is any kind of optical drive, until now. This was just plug and play with Windows 11. Handily I have a few USB 3 ports on the top of my PC so I just plugged it in there and placed it on the top of my case. The lead is incredibly short, about 30cm, if that, so it does limit where you can place it.

Anyway I was able to rip a CD and install some of my old games without any issues and also managed to burn a DVD-R. The fact that there’s a raft of USB ports on the back of the drive plus a memory card slot is a nice bonus though I have yet to utilise them.

Works well and is quite attractive too. Recommended.

This SY-910 portable CD/DVD drive from Kadlun is packaged in an attractive cardboard box describing the functions and applicable operating systems – MacOS and Windows 11.

Inside the box we get a plastic tray containing a nicely-wrapped CD/DVD drive and a plastic bag containing a power cable. This device is intended to be powered over the USB connection from a host computer, but as not all computers may be able to provide enough power for all its functions there is an additional power input from another USB source.

Along with the drive and power cable, there is a multi-lingual instruction manual. The English version is generally fine with only a few linguistic oddities.

The device is shaped like a book, with a curved spine on the left side and a black ‘cover’ wrapped around three sides. On the front we have the DVD drive with a button to open or close the disc tray and an activity LED to indicate when the disc is spinning up/down or running at speed. There’s also a pinhole mechanical tray release should you need to open the tray when the device is either depowered or become stuck.

If you’re wondering how you connect it to a computer, there is a short captive dual USB-C/USB 3.0 Type-A cable stored on the underside of the device with a cable channel to route it out from under the device. This cable allows you to connect it to a wide range of USB 2.0/USB 3.0/ USB-C ports but as it is captive you either have to locate the drive close to the host computer or buy an extension cable if you want it further away.

If you need more power than the host’s USB port can provide, attach the additional power cable to another USB power source and plug it in to the drive. Sadly it uses a round power plug rather than having a standard USB-C PD input. That means, while the main data/power cable is incorporated into the devices body and so always available, you’ll need to remember to carry this proprietary cable too just in case.

One reason you may well need additional power is that this is far more than just an external DVD.

On the back is an array of six ports. Far left is the round external power input socket, then we have a micro-SD/TF card slot, a Type-A USB 3.0 port, then 3 x USB 2.0 Type A ports and finally, a full-size SD card slot. It’s unusual to find the micro-SD and full-size SD card slots so separated, but it’s good that the USB 3.0 port is the only one with a blue inner tab. This aids identification, since there are no labels printed on the body of the case.

There’s also no information provided about how much current the DVD drive and integrated hub draws when in use, so it’s hard to make any informed calculation about whether you’ll need additional power or not. A normal USB-C port will notionally provide 0.9A at 5V, so it probably going to be OK if you’re only using the DVD drive. Start plugging things into the USB ports and additional power should be considered.

The base includes four rubber feet to provide stability and reduce vibration noise when the disc is spinning. There is no CD/DVD burning software included which for some people might be problematic but we only really want this device to access archive files stored on CD or DVD on a laptop without a DVD drive. It’s a standard drive mechanism inside, so will be compatible with pretty much any burner software.

Overall we like this device. The build is just a little rough around the edges and there are a couple of odd design decisions such as the power cable type and lack of stowage, not having any port labels and the minimal information provided, but the provision of multiple USB ports and SD card slots makes this more useful than just a standard external DVD drive.

This Kadluin CD/DVD Drive offers a bit more than many, in that it also doubles as a USB hub/card reader – there are three USB 2.0 and a single USB 3 port plus SD/TF card readers. I think it’s a pity that the unit doesn’t have a USB-C port. The out-of-the-box feel is of a reasonably well-made product with rubber feet etc. and I like the textured case.

Power for this USB drive can come from two sources – from the integral USB lead which features USB A and C connectors and which stores neatly in a groove under the drive. In addition, there’s a rather short power cable provided with a USB connection and jack plug type power plug in case additional power is needed. I found that powering the drive from a USB 3.0 socket on my desktop PC required no additional power.

The draw mechanism works smoothly plus there’s an emergency release. The drive is described as Lightscribe compatible (it can burn disc labels onto suitable media) – but apart from some enthusiasts who keep it alive, this is largely a redundant feature. Disc read/write speeds seem acceptable and my PC recognises the media inserted into card readers without a problem. I’ve had no issues playing/recording various types of CD/DVD media and the drive is quiet in operation.

Overall, this is a handy solution especially as many laptops no longer have a DVD drive, although, arguably it’s a bit bulky if you are just going to use the hub rather than the DVD/CD drive as well.

This external dvd drive connects great to my mini pc. I have this pc connected to my projector, so having the extra ability to now play my old dvds via my pc/projector without connecting bulky equipment is really great.

My mini pc recognised the dvd drive without any issues and as you can see in my photo, it plays dvds and also music CDs without any problems. As expected there is no software on the dvd drive so you need to have appropriate software already installed on your pc in order to play a disc.

I’ll be honest, I ordered this purely to play dvds via my mini pc/projector so I won’t be using it to burn discs – it’s probably been a good 15 years since I last burnt anything to disc lol, so I won’t be testing that particular feature.

The dvd drive is slim, lightweight and quite stylish. There’s a split wire built into the bottom of the drive allowing it to be connected via a USB A or USB C port. I’ve connected mine via one of my mini PC’s standard USB A ports – the drive uses power from the pc to run and doesn’t require a power supply.

There’s another cable included with the dvd drive – the instructions aren’t terribly clear on this, however from what I can understand, this acts as a secondary power cable, should your pc struggle to power the drive through the built in cable – of course I could be wrong as the instructions are poor.

To the back of the drive are 4 additional USB A ports and SD/TF card slots. I don’t have many ports on my tiny pc so I really welcome having the extra ones.

As mentioned above, the instructions are lacking somewhat. The included booklet outlines several troubleshooting issues and that’s pretty much it. If you’re not very tech savvy, this might well be a stumbling block.

Overall it’s a great little dvd drive that does exactly what I need it to. The quality is good and it works great, but it really needs better instructions.

My new laptop has no CD player but i have a lot of stuff still on CD’s like pictures and music.
This works great and is very simple to set up.
I can now copy all of my stuff onto SSD so I don’t lose it.
