My unit was a returned unit as grease was found inside the box and over labe was apparent .
As this unit worked fine I accepted it and did not make a fuss
This is a nice chunky cable with pre-fitted keyed connectors & dust caps. It’s a metre long, coloured coded (red & black) and comes with a connector for adding more cables in series.
There’s not a lot you can say about it, it’s well made and can help extending battery/solar charging cables.
It uses quite thick cables that should handle 15 amps of charging, which is quite a lot for charging (most battery chargers are only 4 or 8 amps).
This is definitely a useful addition to my workshop, many times my charging cable is just not quite long enough to reach the battery on my bikes, well worth having.
I have received this SAE quick release adapter with bullet connectors. The cable is made from 14AWG cable, measuring a fraction over 1 metre in length. Each conductor core is moulded with red and black insulation and the set comes with a polarity changer, which I can’t really see much use for unless your equipment requires it.
The cable is robustly made and matches that of my existing solar panel. I think that the product could be improved by stating its current carrying capacity and temperature profile, but that’s not common to see, even if it is useful. On the plus side, each connector end has a water-resistant cover, and although not water-proof, if you hang the connector downward, no water can easily gain access. It’s thoughtful to make these caps attached to the connector so they don’t go astray; just make sure that they are dry and free of debris before each use to prevent contaminating your connectors.
The connectors work very well and make a secure connection between your solar panel and this relatively short extender. This is not to criticise; with DC circuits, you want the least cable length as possible to avoid resistive losses. If you look closely, each male pin has a small raised section of plastic supporting it, and this helps seal the connection when it is plugged in. I really like these subtle points of design.
This is very good 10Amp charger and worked brilliantly on my 80Ah Merc battery. My 5Amp expensive battery charger used for a classic car just got very warm with this high Ah battery. Great value for the price.
This is a high quality cable with useful dust caps for the SAE connectors on each end and an SAE adaptor convertor is included to allow the convenient change of polarity if required. The cable is terminated with a SAE input on one end and an SAE output on the other end. Another nice touch is that the dust caps are tethered to the cable so that when they are not in use they do not get misplaced, but the caps can still be completely removed if you want.
The cable is rated at 14AWG to a temperature of 80 degrees C and 300v so was more than adequate for my use which was to provide an extension to a small but very effective solar panel.
From tip of plug to tip of the opposite plug the length is 103cm so the cable hasn’t been scrimped on.
I have been very pleased with the performance of the cable and with the very secure connection of the plugs.
Got this to extend the charging cable for my Optimate so it can more easily reach my motorcycle. Works perfectly. Also comes with a little connector which I assume allows you to swap the polarity if needs be. I had no need for it as it’s just a straightforward job of plugging in one end to the charger and the other end to the lead connected to my battery. Even has little captive dust caps for each of the connectors. Overall, very pleased.
Having rearranged the garage to make more space, my motorbike is now slightly out of reach of its trickle charger that I leave it connected to all the time. As my charger uses SAE connectors, this extension cable appeared to be the answer to the problem.
The cable is more than thick enough for my needs, as I trickle charge. It’s not that flexible this time of year (still getting occasional overnight frosts), but good enough. The connectors are decent enough, and certainly connect securely.
A polarity reversing connector is also included, should you need to flip the polarity.
The downside for me is it’s ever so slightly too short, the one I received is about 95cm long including connectors, with around 85cm of cable. Had it 1m plus the connectors, it would have been perfect for me, as it is, I need another extension.
I have three chargers on the go currently which use these connectors. Although the SAE connectors on battery chargers are widely used, there is not actually a standard for which pole of the connector is positive and which negative.
So as you collect different chargers and the accessory leads it’s likely you’ll get a charger telling you to swap leads at some point. Easy enough with battery clips, not so easy if you have a lead wired into a motorcycle.
So the inclusion of a gender changer here is worth a mention. It’s very helpful. It’s not shown in teh pictures, but they mention it in the description. They usually go for about 2 (buy you’ll need to buy four) so this adds quite a bit of value for me to this otherwise simple lead.
The lead works fine. It’s at the slightly thinner end of wire gauge (14 AWG – suitable for 15-20 A depending on who you believe), but fine for the vast majority of trickle chargers on sale. There are other extensions around using thicker 12 and 10 AWG so look at those if you have higher amperage requirements.
SAE connectors seem to vary quite a lot in terms of how snugly they fit. These weren’t tightest when I tried them, but they worked without issues.
I’m not sure of the value of a 1m extension personally. I suppose there will be circumstances where only 1m is needed and you don’t want a bunch of extra wire dangling, but I’d probably go for something a bit longer giveb the choice for a bit more versatility.
But that doesn’t change the fact that this does what it says and seems reasonable value for an extension and gender changer.
I’m knocking one star off. Why? There are three listings of this product. They both claim heavy duty. One is fine in that it shows a picture of the actual item. Two others (this listing and another) show a picture of a coiled lead which is thicker than reality (it looks like they’ve photoshopped this in). The third listing is also 1 currently for the same item – odd.
I am not a fan of embellished or misleading product listings and hope that if enough of us review accordingly, sellers might start to get the message eventually. But it would be harsh to knock off more than one star for what is otherwise a reasonable product.
