I’m a professional photographer. I shoot architecture and generally speaking have no need for studio type constant lighting.
I bought this for a product shoot I was covering for a friend. And boy oh boy am I glad I did.
I’m absolutely blown away with this light. Much brighter than I would have imagined. Battery lasts far longer than I thought it would. The ability to change temperature is fantastic.
Accessories are really good too.
To get this level of quality at this price is astounding. Absolute game changer!!
I am updating this review following my discovery that the firmware cannot be updated by the user. This seems to be possible on most other cob lights but not for this unit. I don’t like the idea that I’ve purchased 2 units new within 1 week of each other not being on the same version and I would not have realised this had I not purchased a second unit. I regret to say smallrig cannot give me an answer to suggest this will even be possible at a later date. I’m now thinking of returning both units because this means that smallrig can develop and improve the firmware over a period of time for the same model ( and I’m sure they will) but as things stand if I cannot move my units forward with those developments then something is wrong here. This I believe is a massive oversight by Smallrig and it’s such a shame as apart from this I really love these units and still think they’re fantastic but this discovery is disappointing. If you look at photos 1 & 2 I have posted for one of the units you will the screen showing version 0.1 which is the latest version. If you look at photos 3 & 4 you will see the unit I bought from Amazon shows version 0.0 and I’m now wondering if I have been sold a returned unit that has sat in the stock room? Read my review for the charger which arrived with missing parts and consider why I am now thinking this way? Amazon or Smallrig replaced that charger with no concerns and I am grateful but somehow my enthusiasm for smallrig has taken a bit of a knock and I am now a little disappointed. I have emailed Amazon as directed by smallrig and asked if they would replace the unit with at least one that has the latest firmware and waiting for a response. Please read my review below which is absolutely genuine as I still feel it’s a great unit but I also feel buyers should be aware that the software cannot be updated by the user or at least that there is a possibility the can end up with 2 different firmware products if they buy additional units. Maybe if smallrig read this they might realise they really need to do something about it. Surely they can Despite this concern I still believe it’s a great product and will leave the 4 star rating. but only just
The original review below:
As an actor I’ve been trying to up my game when it comes to auditions and self taping. Having been working with an iPhone and a flat panel led; although I was booking some jobs I knew I could do better if I improved my production values. So whilst looking into what equipment would work better for me I purchased a LUMIX GH5ii from Amazon to improve the quality of my tapes and then considered what studio lighting would be best for the job. My key requirements were to find something that was small and portable but also capable of being used with a soft box. I came across this small rig having read most of the reviews and watched various YouTube videos. Together with the case and the extras that were included ( reflector, hand grip, type c charging cables long and short, stand and battery mount) this seemed to tick many boxes for me. My only negative (hence the 4 stars) was the lack of remote control but hey it’s not as if it’s difficult to adjust whilst working. One of the biggest positives for this unit was the built in battery but this also brought some consideration for concern as to How Long the built in rechargeable battery would last before needing to be replaced and “if” it could be replaced? I will only be using the light on occasions when required to audition so I’m hopeful that it will last me a while before I have to cross that bridge. I do believe that even when the built in battery eventually gives up the ghost the light should still work if connected to a usb c power source or external battery but the whole idea here is to have light that can work independently from its own charge so I will need to see how things play out. The build of the unit is plastic but it feels that it is made to a very high quality and the design is really fantastic. This light fits in the palm of my hand and although not as powerful as larger units it still has a considerable amount of power which I feel is more than enough to meet my requirements. Also, it has an indicator on the screen telling you approximately how much running time is left which increases or decreases subject to the amount of power you are using giving you more time the lower the power is reduced. I have not tested the running time yet but this feature alone is so useful as it’s good to know how much time you have to work. Charging time on the unit using a normal power source I have read can be extremely long but with the right charging unit which I also bought from small rig charging time is considerably reduced maybe from 1-2 hours max. So do consider buying an additional 100 watt charger to give you the fastest turn around time. The colour temperature on the unit is amazing. You can dial the colour very easily to match the colour balance of the lighting in the room or dial it to a day light balance for a much cooler temperature. This for me is a significant must depending on the mood you might need to create. Also, I need to mention that the fan runs pretty much most of the time but it’s relatively silent and if you use the unit in ECO mode not only does this extend the battery life but the fan noise is also reduced. I do not think the fan will interfere with sound unless the mic is next to the unit. So for me the fan is not an issue at all and does its job without interfering with your job. I can go on a lot more as to the pros of this unit but perhaps if I tell you that I have since bought a second unit because I think it is so good and I can light from two different areas that will give me all of the option I need. I really feel that I have the perfect kit to meet my requirements and the perfect portability of this kit means I can take it anywhere very easily and this purchase for me will be a total game changer when it comes to the standard of tape I will be able to produce. I would highly recommend this small rig unit along with the small soft box. I have read that small rig will be producing a mini mount to Bowens mount soon allowing you to use a larger soft box and this will be something I will definitely be keen to purchase when available. I would like to think that when the internal battery packs up that small rig might be able to install a new battery but I guess this remains to be seen. I’m sure this would give potential purchases greater confidence in future proofing their purchase and would be a very welcome option. In the meantime, I’m trying to find out if the software on the unit can be updated? Does anyone know? One of my unit shows version 0.1 the other shows 0.0 this suggests to me that it should be possible but I’ve not seen anything on the instructions or anywhere else that would refer to this. This is not a deal breaker at the moment and I haven’t noticed much of a difference in the operation of both units but there is a slight difference in the way each unit turns on when the dial is rotated and I would like both units to be working from the same page. Perhaps if someone from smallrig reads this review they might be able to advise. With all being said, I have very quickly become a smallrig fan and think this unit will find its way into many peoples baskets. I am really pleased with my purchase and I’m convinced this is just what I needed.
This feels like a very solid, professional light in a very compact and convenient form. Body is metal with easy to access controls, and for the size it kicks out a good amount of light.
Included accessories are good, the reflector turns this from a wide fill light to a more concentrated spot. External batteries can’t connect directly, but you do get a clip-on holder for power packs or batteries, and the internal battery gives a decent working time.
You don’t get a charger plug included, and although you can use any USB-C charger it will be very slow to fully charge if it’s not a high power one.
Excellent quality COB Video Light from SmallRig made from excellent materials and will last a long time.
SmallRig always impresses me with there products and this is no exception it is a beautifully designed light that looks sleek and stylish, you will look the part if you go on site anywhere with this light. I have been using this light for both for videography & photography.
I will start with my only grumble with this light and that’s the bowens mount YOU WILL NOT be able to use your usual bowens mount softboxes/parabolic with it, this has a mini bowens mount which I have to admit is not something I personally have heard of before BUT I see why SmallRig have done this, to keep the overall size of the light small which is a great selling point. If a normal size bowens mount was used this light would almost be double the size so this is something to keep in mind if you are planning on using your existing softboxes, SmallRig sells a parabolic softbox on Amazon which comes with diffuser and grid separately at time of writing this costs 39.90p (UK price) which I feel is a fair and very good price which I have purchased.
Can be plugged into a wall socket to use BUT also comes with an inbuilt battery which makes this truly portable and this is how I have been using this the most at sites now for just over a month. A great feature that sets this light apart from other brands is you can also use it with a V mount battery or even a PD power supply/power bank which I have been doing as I don’t have a v mount battery yet and so far I have had no issues. It comes with a power bank clip that attaches to the back of the light that you can adjust to the size the battery your using which is a very nice touch and the BEST feature about this is you can still use the light while the battery is charging.
All the accessories that come in the pack are excellent quality mini reflector, power bank clip, carrying bag (that can hold all the accessories it comes with), grip handle, light stand adapter & two charging cables. The mini reflector works very well but for my personal taste I fell the lighting is a bit too harsh for my needs and that’s why I got the parabolic softbox BUT you could probably get away with putting the diffuser material over the reflector BUT I would not do this for long periods of time.
The RC 60B COB LED video light is very bright and powerful more than I was expecting from such a small light, has a good adjustable range of 2700K to 6500K which should be more than enough for most situations, Nice size display on the side of the light which has a backlight so makes it very easy to see the settings and battery life. Two good sized knobs/dials to adjust the settings another nice feature is these can both be easily removed should you have the need to replace them.
Overall I am very happy with the COB Video Light and I would not even have to think twice in recommending it.
For video recording and photography I find that having a means of lighting subjects can be essential for both studio and location shooting. This SmallRig 60w rechargeable COB light has sufficient power for studio photography while being very compact and portable with the light itself weighing only 650g. It is supplied with a good quality storage case in which the included USB cables, power bank bracket, grip handle, stand adaptor and reflector can all be transported along with the light.
On the side of the light there is a display panel which shows battery level, charging status along with the settings for colour temperature, brightness and effects. It also displays a time guide for remaining usage before battery depletes based upon the setting being used. Using only the light with no reflector the output covers a wide area. With the included reflector attached the light is much more concentrated into a smaller circular area with shadows being very well defined. I have used this light for portrait photography with a mini parabolic softbox attached to soften the light output and prevent the light from the LED shining directly at my subjects as it can be uncomfortably bright. Modifiers for use with this light will need to be compatible with the mini mount. I have purchased a SmallRig mini parabolic softbox from Amazon to use with this light which is a very good fit.
During charging and use of the light there is a small amount of noise from the internal cooling fan which I barely notice. Charging does take a good few hours from empty and when I have been using the light for outdoor shooting I have been connecting a V battery to the light for extended usage. I have also charged the light a few times using a suitable V battery with PD output.
Overall I am very impressed with the performance and portability of this light along with the build quality and ease of use. I like working with natural light but as it can vary a great deal, having a small portable LED light with a good output which can be balanced with the colour temperature outside is for me very useful. Over the years I have a purchased a variety of SmallRig products and been very satisfied with them. This portable 60w LED COB light is no exception and I am more than happy to recommend.
I love the built quality of SMALLRIG products and the RC 60B is no exception, the Metal top and bottom plate, the smooth knob controls, the handle grip and battery clip are all made to excellent standard. The built in fan does help to keep the unit cool but it can be a bit annoying when shooting up close as it is audible at arms length. The mounting system is non standard but adding diffusing material is easy with just a rubber band at the end of the cone.
It takes PD power bank or power source and can be used while charging, the display will tell you the charging wattage which is great. The ECO mode basically limit the light output so the battery can last longer, the FX function is easy to set with colour icon showing on the bright LCD display. At full power it is a very bright light and both intensity and colour range can be adjusted with increment of 1% to 100%. Colour temperature seems to be accurate with good output at both cool and warm light.
The carrying case has cut out form for each part of the light, very secure and great for outdoor night shoots.
The Smallrig RC60B is a really nicely made light that kicks out a pretty impressive amount of light for it’s compact size.
It’s lightweight and can be easily hand held if you’re shooting, the handle that comes with it has a screw thread on so you could even mount a camera direct to that and have it underslung from your camera/phone.
It’s a mini Bowens mount so any modifiers will need to be mini Bowens which limits them and they would also need to be lightweight as I think if you put a full size to mini adapter and a large softbox on this you’d damage the mounting area.
The battery takes a long time to charge for a short run time, about 3 hours for 45 miniutes, however if you haven’t got a high power usb c charger then it will take a lot longer to charge than that too.
The controls and screen on the side are tactile, easy to use and easy to read and control. The video effects such as firelight, fireworks, strobe, tv etc are fairly standard and pretty nice to have, the compact size of this light means you could tuck it away somewhere hidden and utilise these features.
The light with no modifier on has a fairly wide spread which will make a nice fill, when you put the included reflector on it becomes a little more of a spot light with a pretty sharp falloff.
You’ll want to put some form of cover on the reflector as directly shining this onto talent would be uncomfortable for them as it’s very bright.
As a light to take out with you to shoot quick interview style videos or short feature it’s great.
You can also clip on a power pack or a v mount battery pack to run it from (or run it from the usb c “mains” power) which is a bonus and makes the light more suitable for everyday use.
Overall it’s a really well made light that is perfectly portable, if you have mini Bowens modifiers already then great, if not you’ll need to look at what ones you’d need, you’ll also need to take in to consideration the 45 to 75 minute useage time without external power. For most video makers this will probably be plenty of time, and can be extended with the use of power banks of course.

The light has a built in fan when in use , with brightness and lux settings. Can be run on battery or connected to the mains .
It has a small diffuser but larger light boxes can be added, a real piece of kit for the amateur video/photographer.
