I was bought this (W702) for my Birthday as was about to ride across Europe and wanted something more capable than a SatNav. The functionality is good, but also somewhat limited. This is mostly not due to Carpuride, but rather the limitations of Android Auto. Google you need to get your act together. I saw two Apple iPlay linked Carpurides on my trip and their functionality is head and shoulders above Android Auto. With Android Auto you are VERY limited on what apps you can use and the Navigation is usable, but not great.
In terms of the Carpuride itself I had issues with the unit spontaneously restarting itself (yes it is wired in correctly and I have tested the cables and connections and there are no loose connections or damaged wires), I had issues with it disconnecting from my phone at random, and worst of all the power button is impossible to operate with gloves on. Because of this, every time the unit lost the connection to my phone, I had to pull over remove my glove, power off the unit, and power it on again. Most irritating!!! However, it did get me across Europe and back.
So, Carpuride, please fit a bigger power button that you can operate with gloves on for the next version, please improve your build quality (I suspect something is loose inside causing the spontaneous restarts), and see if you can get Google to make Android Auto a LOT better. Finally, in the navigation screen you cannot zoom out and have the map stay auto-centred. It also has a REALLY bad habit of putting a label for something right over the top of the junction you are about to negotiate. That screen badly needs a redesign with smaller info boxes (put them on one side) and a much better Map screen.
It did the job but if I had it to do over, I would have bought an IP68 rugged Android 8″ Tablet and mounted that instead, and just used my phone as a mobile hotspot.
This is a great product, and tge support guys are very quick and helpful, (no issue with the unit they will send you a file using a photo you supply so you can personalise your start up screen)
Highly recommend this product.
I love this bit of kit I was sceptical at first with how it would work in the real world for me. I needn’t have worried. Links great with my phone and Cardo and provides full android auto functionality. Really pleased with it.
Best little gadget Ive had for a while. I have a touring bike and was tired of my iPhone clipped to handle bars. Constantly scrolling between music maps and apps. This is brilliant. Worked straight out of box and screen is wonderful. Pairing was a doddle. Switched it on and it found my iPhone and connected to Bluetooth. Paired to helmet intercom and sorted. Highly recommend if you’re a biker and want music maps calls etc without fuss.
*** UPDATE ***
I bought this product after watching a lot of well received YouTube reviews and thought it would be a good alternative to having my phone mounted to the handlebars using a Quadlock mount. It was is a good solution for my needs and worked successfully for 5wks then would not turn on at all – completely dead. As 5wks is outside the Amazon 30d returns period, I feared the worst and contacted the seller who suggested a firmware update, which did not work and the unit remained dead.
Having exhausted options to get the unit working again, the seller replaced it (at their own cost), which was delivered within 24hrs and had the updated firmware installed and which works perfectly.
A bit frustrating, but a good outcome has been achieved and the seller has to be commended for their customer support – very good.
I knocked off one-star purely because of the initial hardware failure.
Bought this as a deviation from the usual sat navs. As I use Android Auto in the car in conjunction with Google maps and find it ticks all the boxes for me, thought I’d give it a try.
Easy fit to the bike although the fixing system induces far too much movement, allowing the unit to sway about too much for my liking. I’ll have to find or make a different fitting system to reduce this. The unit itself works well with clear images and navigation sync to my phone and Google maps. Can’t comment on Bluetooth connection as I’m waiting for a Bluetooth unit on back order. I will update when this arrives and tested. Overall though, well pleased with the unit and recommend it.
Haven’t used it on the road yet but I’ve tested it on the bench so to speak and it works as advertised and as seen on numerous you tube reviews so no point in reiterating how seamlessly it all works. I had to do some research into how to fit it to my KTM because of the fixed ball mount system on the back of the unit and not wanting to mount it on the handlebar or similar place because of it’s size and also I don’t want to be looking down all the time when I’m navigating. Decided the best arrangement for me involves placing it above the dashboard using the Touratech GPS bracket and RAM mounts RAM-B-408-37-62U AND RAP-B-201U-A – basically a ball mount with a short double socket arm. I also got the pin lock security knob that replaces the existing non secure knob on the double ball socket. Using this kit I mounted the ball connecter on the Carpuride to the RAM kit and then onto the GPS bracket. Cables easily secured neatly out of the way and plugged into the aux power outlet below the dash, it’s worked out really well because the 12v aux outlet on the KTM powers on and off with the ignition so no worries about draining the battery.
All the kit provided with the W702 is quality and includes a choice of electrical connections to the bike; I used the USB connection, the direct to battery connection includes an inline safety fuse and if you use this remember to turn the unit off, there is a button on the side, when you park up or it will flatten your battery!
Fantastic kit for the price, solid construction with a 2 year warranty and a Prime 40 discount to boot! I’m very happy with my purchase and feeling positive that it will operate as, or better than expected. Only time will tell ….. So I will try to remember to update this review once I’ve done a thousand miles or so.
I hope this has been helpful. ;))
Paired with samsung s10 and freedcom head Set. Works well with Google maps and waze for navigation. Using Spotify for music, sound very good and clear. Not had chance for a long ride yet, will be going touring in July to give it a good test.
I’ve just replaced the old Garmin IV satnav on my R1200 RT with one of these units. It sits nicely on the original mounting rail, although I did modify the supplied mount in order to do away with the ‘U’ clamp arrangement. It sits snugly behind the screen in its lowest position.
I’ve paired it with an iPhone 13 and a Cardo Freecom helmet unit. Once I’d worked out how to pair everything, it seems to be working really well and makes the clunky Cardo interface redundant. Sound quality sounds pretty good – the volume dial on the Freecom still works although I’m not sure that the switching between phone / music functions is still the same. This doesn’t really matter as the Carplay functionality that you now have simply replaces all of that faff.
What I discovered: make sure that you get your phone to ‘forget’ the Cardo unit. Pair the phone with the W702 first, then pair the W702 with the Cardo unit – you don’t need the Cardo interface at all. You can’t add or move the icons on the screen, which is a bit irritating. Apps that you might want to use need to be opened on your phone before they’ll operate on the W702.
It’s still early days and I’m keen to see how it perfoms on the road, but first impressions are good.
Ok, fitting this is nice and easy, and using it is simple even with gloves on, admittedly I’m using light gloves atm. the only slight issue I have is that even at max volume it is very quiet with both the music and directions when using earplugs. As a workaround, I could connect the Sena to the phone rather than the Carpuride but that sort of defeats the point of having the unit as I lose the functionality it has. At the moment it isn’t a major concern but it becomes one I’ll have to do that and just accept the loss of some of the Carpuride functionality.
