This socket tester ( KEWTECH 103 ) Is possibly one of the best you could get. Its a no nonsense, no frills tester with great visual LED and audible tone. – – – Also worth considering Is the ( SOCKET & SEE ) tester. I’ve had the SOK12 for years ( I think they are SOK22 nowadays ) . Anyways, both excellent socket testers that work as intended.
So simple, I am a rank amateur at all things like this. Put it in socket, straight away tone safe, not safe, or issue. Exactly what I needed to be aware of safety issues. Recommended for basic alerts to problems with plugs
Have you seen the price of electricians nowadays? 150 for a swap? No chance! I decided to take a chance at replacing a broken in half plug outlet caused by some electrical fault. Seemed simple enough, just turn off the mains power by the fuse box, and then slot in the wires as per instructions and tighten it up.
But as I am not an electrician and have children, you can never be too careful. What if for example, something came loose during installation or it there’s not enough copper wire touching the end? If you’re really clumsy, you may have even swapped the wrong wires resulting in a serious safety hazard.
This handy little device handles that anxiety. It detects loose wires and incorrect installation. It does not unfortunately detect Earth / Neutral Swap but I am very confident I did that correctly it also does not claim to detect the strength of the Earth connection, just that it exists but that’s okay for me. All in all, this device shows the job was done successfully and now I am happy for the plug socket to be used. Thanks.
There are lots of similar testers around, some from branded names and others just generic testers. But when it comes to working with electricity I want a brand that gives me confidence of its accuracy and reliability and for me Kewtech delivers this.
The tester can indicate 14 wiring conditions and for me an essential feature is the audible indication. This audible indication is nice and clear and sufficiently loud.
Very highly recommended.
We had some issues with a couple of our plug sockets around the house. One had a faulty socket where we couldn’t insert anything into the socket and the other had a crackle sound on the right hand socket and just wouldn’t work properly. Rather than turn all of the electrics off I just wanted to make sure I turned off what I needed. The Kewtech socket tester emits a beep once inserted into a socket and turned on. Once you turn off the correct switch on the consumer unit, the beeping will stop. A nice and simple way of knowing there’s no further electric running through the socket (I also used an electrical screwdriver just to be safe). What I really liked was that it gives you a really handy indication as to whether there’s anything wrong with the wiring. It’ll either give you 3 green lights and a constant beep, meaning all is ok, or it will give you 1 or 2 lights with a handy guide on the front of the unit to tell you what might be wrong. For the crackling socket of mine it was something to do with the neutral wiring so only 2 lights came on. It’s a very simple to use unit, even for a complete novice like me. I managed to change both sockets successfully without electrocuting myself and it’s thanks to this neat little gadget.
Bought this basic tester having seen it used on a YouTuber electrician channel.
It identified two faults. An incorrecty wired (from the factory) 4 in 1 adapter bar, and a faulty earth in an outbuilding, both of which are now fixed.
Well worth the investment.
Plug in , it’s that simple I’m no electrician , but this was my first port of call before I called one out to assess my socket which had been occasionally tripping the main board
I plugged this in and it diagnosed the defect straight away , Someone had put the Live and neutral in the wrong way .. So it was easy enough to fix without spending money on a call out charge
It’s also really good just to help you with turning off the correct breaker , because it sets off a tone when plugged in , so if your working yourself once the tone goes off you know you have turned off correct switch
For the price it’s definitely worth having as an extra safety measure if doing minor repairs ..
I’m a Chartered Building Surveyor with a basic understanding of UK electrical installations and the 18th Edition. For house surveys I have found this to be the best implementation of this type of checker. If a fault is discovered using this simple tester I always recommend an NICEIC Inspection and test to a purchaser.
Great item. Due to so many people buying homes, during the Stamp Duty hoilday and, electricians been mega busy as a result, I was unable to get an electrician to checkout my electrics prior to purchasing my home. Rather than doing nothing, it was very useful to check all the sockets to establish they are useable and functioning. Money well spent on a very useful and well made product. This will also come in very handy for DIY projects involving adding or replacing sockets.
