This fan is designed for cameras which overheat, like some of the Sony mirrorless cameras. It mounts by putting one of the plastic inserts where your flip out screen would have gone, with a variety of sizes to accommodate different cameras. Fits nicely on my ZV-E1. The fan then slots into the insert, just using friction to stay in, but feels very solid actually!
The fan needs USB power to be used. The usb port on my camera doesn’t seem to provide sufficient power, but if you’re using an external source like an NPF battery with usb ports or a v lock that’ll work! Also it’s possible that other cameras will provide enough power through the usb port anyway, it’s just mine didn’t. Not a design flaw with the product though, just a camera issue. Also the usb c to a cable provided is long enough that it doesn’t matter if your power source is further away!
The only negative is the fan isn’t silent. It’s not terrible, and in the lower power setting it won’t be a problem, but at max I can imagine it being picked up by mics if the camera is close to the microphone. That’s the only reason for docking a star, I think it could be a tad quieter.
To get the tight, accurate fit I wanted for my XH2 I needed to slightly trim the tab on of the four fitting-shells this cooling fan comes with. The next shell size down with the correct size tab was too loose for my tastes whereas the simple tab trimming I did creates a shell that fits firmly enough for robust handheld camera work. If the tab had fitted perfectly in the first place I would be rating the device 5 stars, but the fitting was a matter of guesswork, trial and error with eventual inspiration attained by watching the little video in the product description due to the lack of an instruction sheet.
The fan itself has two speeds available, it’s near silent in either mode, fine for external microphones to ignore. Internal mics would probably still hear the fan even as quiet as it is. There is no relevant vibration that I could detect. The fan appears well made and in my opinion, is a budget-friendly tidy alternative that delivers the cooling that is needed. Power is via a USB cable, a long (too long in my view) USB C to USB is supplied.
