Waveshare 5G M.2 to Gigabit Ethernet Converter, 5G M.2
Waveshare 5G M.2 to Gigabit Ethernet Converter, 5G M.2 to USB3.1, Aluminum Alloy Case, Wall-Mount Support, Quad Antennas for Networked Medical Treatment, Smart Robots, Security Monitoring Networking
This Waveshare 5G M.2 to Gigabit Ethernet Converter is a fantastic platform for building a high-performance 5G router. The aluminum alloy case feels sturdy and the wall-mount option is convenient. The four antennas suggest excellent signal reception potential.
Just be aware that this is essentially a “carrier board”— you’ll need to supply your own 5G M.2 module to enable cellular connectivity. Once you have that, this board provides everything else you need to bridge that connection to a wired network via the Gigabit Ethernet port or to other devices through the USB 3.1 port.
UPDATE : I was wrong about drivers for the RTL8125. I’ve modified to 4-star rating. Using as ETH only in enclosure which is great! Still could have better ventilation and true POE option.
This could be a great solution for someone like me who would like to only have the modem in an outdoor enclosure and run ETH into the house to a router vs. the router also being outside in the enclosure and connected to the modem via USB then running ETH inside. However, the RTL8125 drivers seem limited…even Mikrotik doesn’t have them installed on routers. OpenWRT has some available, but I’m using a fork of Rooter and am not allowed to install kmod packages. So, this turned into just another M.2 to USB adapter. Also, the enclosure needs mesh sides to let the modem breathe.
