Good product the only problem is that it frays if you need to cut it. However we soon realised that if you do need to cut it , put some Gaffer tape over the area you want to cut and cut through the tape , it works a treat.
First thing you notice when you open the pack is that really stinks of plastic – not that it makes any difference when it is covered with an inch worth of shingle.
The second thing you notice is that this barrier seems to have been sealed along its long edge to form a giant tube – there is no edge! It has only lightly been sealed though and you can break it apart and form 1 giant sheet of barrier quite easily. Not sure why they did that.
The fabric is slightly thicker than the ones I have used before to stop weeds coming through a patch of garden that I have covered in small stones and shingle. Without the weed barrier then it only take a couple of weeks for weeds to shoot up in between the stones, and then you are left to having to spray the stone with some weed killer. This type of barrier I have found to be very effective and still working after several years.
So I cut a section of the barrier and laid it down on some prepared ground, and then covered with shingle to a decent depth so that you could not see the barrier. I would say that it looks good, but the whole point of this type of barrier is that you don’t see it, as it’s covered with a layer of shingle! So I’m sure it looks good under the stone, but can’t actually tell you. It seems to be doing it’s job, and water is passing though it (from all the rain we are currently having).
I noticed at the end of the last growing season last year that the weed control fabric in parts of my fruit cage was looking in very shoddy condition. It was also covered in various kinds of unwanted vegetation. This thick fabric is very simple to cut and peg down.
This is a 2m x 10m sheet which sells at 13.99 (at the time of this review). Given that it is very high quality I think that represents excellent value for money. Other sizes are available too and they are also keenly priced.
I am very happy to give this five stars.
Every year during the growing season my vegetable patch gets infested with weeds and it has become a back breaking task to try ,not always successfully to keep them under control. This year I am going to prevent the weeds taking hold by using this tough water permeable weed barrier. Its a good size of 2 metres by 10 metres and it can be cut easily to the size required with scissors using the guidelines to ensure a straight cut.I will use pegs or staples to pin it down and as well as suppressing the weeds that compete with my plants for nutrients it should also help to reduce watering in hot dry weather helping to keep the soil moist and saving me money as I am on a water meter. For the time alone that i will save by not weeding i think makes this fabric is worth it’s low cost and with its long life it is very cost effective and I recommend it.
We have this ready to lay out on an area where we need to suppress some weeds to expose what lies beneath – we think the foundation of an old building.
The thickness of the material is excellent and it is dark in colour to block our sunlight as needed.
If it does the job I’ll have to return to add a photo.
Feels like a decent thickness and that it should last a reasonable amount of time.
It is permeable to water so the rain can get through, but it should stop the weeds.
I am using it to line my raised beds to keep the bindweed that is strangling the rest of the garden from entering the beds.
Easy to cut, and with parallel lines marked lengthwise to make cutting more accurate.
Time will tell, but seems good.
I ordered this weed barrier fabric to cover an area at the bottom of my garden between a large structure and a fence which has been overtaken by nettles. I’ve used fleece fabrics previously, and found that they deteriorate too quickly, rip when taken up and they allow roots to get through. This weed control fabric is much tougher and heavier, and hopefully it will block out all the light so that in time, the area will stay clear of unwanted weeds.
I was expecting to receive a single sheet of fabric 2m x 25m. However, there were two 2m x 12.5m lengths in the package. The area I am covering is approximately 1.5m wide going all around the back of the garden.
The fabric appears to be strong and robust. It certainly won’t rip. I noticed that the edges have been heat sealed to stop them from fraying. Something I could perhaps do myself if I do need to cut it. It’s made from PP, which I understand is polypropylene. I don’t usually like using plastic, especially in the garden, but I simply can’t control the nettles coming from under my fence. The description tells me that it’s non corrosive, so from that I assume that it won’t leach toxins into the soil. In the meantime, it’s extremely useful for warming the soil and preventing weeds from taking root on my vegetable plot, which is where I’m using it for now.
It’s an excellent ground cover fabric. It’s really tough and it’s heavy. As it’s woven it will allow water to penetrate so there won’t be puddles of water on top. Overall it’s perfect for the job intended and hopefully in the coming months I’ll be able to walk around the back of my shed without needing a machete. All good!
Update. At last I have found time to dig over the area around my shed and have laid the half of the sheet. I am so happy with this ground cover. It fitted perfectly. There was a little left over at the sides to tuck under, ensuring that I got a really close fit to my fence. It was held in place with garden staples.
I highly recommend this weed suppressant fabric, it’s exactly what I wanted.
