The only caution for Apple disciples is that you need to download software from third parties. It does work fast and crisply and provides good security access protocols to protect the data on the device from unauthorised access.
Very good product. I got a new iPad Pro and I copied a video from my my old smaller iPad so I could Display it on my new ipad. Excellent.
I recently upgraded my iPhone after 5 years and had over 8000 photos & videos on the old phone which I have never backed up or even thought about transferring to my computer or iCloud so I first uploaded everything to iCloud as you do but when downloaded to my computer all the files have the date I downloaded them and not the date I took the photos which I wanted. Then as I looking on amazon came across this and thought I would give it a try.
I got the 128GB version the device is very well made and comes with a ring so you can attach it to a key ring this is not something I would personally use but is a very nice addition which I am sure others will use. It says it is for iPhone device but has both a lightning & USB C connector so can be used on both.
Transferring of files to the device and then to my computer is very fast a-lot faster than uploading to iCloud and then downloading to my computer even with my fast internet connection I can’t say for Android but for iPhone I had to download and use there app (JD Drive). You can choose to backup all photos on the iPhone which is the easiest way or you can copy and paste the images/videos and here is my first problem with the app I could not see an option to select all but I filtered by day and started to do it that way. Now my second problem with the app your selecting away scrolling down all the images and it gets to a point where it has reached the end of the cache I guess and loads more images at this point it unselects everything you have selected it does show 1000 images/videos so I figured this was the point you should just copy/paste the images but that is not the case sometimes it happened after 400 images selected a few times after I had selected scrolled down by 200 images I will give it the benefit of the doubt and just hope it was due to me having over 8000 images on the phone.
Now for a minor problem my computer does not have a lightening or USB port on it so I would not have been able to transfer the files lucky I have a few USB C to USB convertors which I had bought from amazon for something else so was able to use this, this is something to be aware of in case you have an older computer but even with me using this convertor it was still extremely fast transferring the files.
Overall I am extremely happy with this product and would recommend it, transferring the photos/videos with this did save the date of the files when the they was taken which is what I wanted, very easy to use with the app and fast. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is the issues I had with the app.
I ordered this JDTDC Flash-Drive for my daughter as her phone was pretty much full with images and videos and she needed to free up some space and have the ability to back up her files. The memory stick arrived beautifully packaged including a keyring attachment and manual. The construction of it is flawless although I would be a little wary of having the device dangling on a keyring with one of the connecting plugs exposed. Both connectors have a plastic cap for a degree of protection at each end of the memory stick. However these caps are quite easy to come off which would leave the plugs exposed to dust and moisture. Had the outer cage covered both ends it would have offered a good amount of protection from potential impacts for both of the connectors. A small point which in actuality does not detract from quality and functionality of this memory stick. First time it was plugged into my daughter’s iOS phone she was prompted to install an app which is used in conjunction with the memory stick, it is very intuitive and facilitated the transfer of her files onto the stick with no issues. Transfer speeds seem really good although I have no means to test them, the process of transferring my daughter’s files was quicker than expected. In summary this is a very well made, compact external flash drive which works well for the price.
As for organisation on the drive, it’s not too bad and you can create your own folders but it’s very simple like that of a normal hard drive.
It takes a little while to adjust to it but once you have it’s easy to organise.
The device is lovely quality, metal but the only downside I’d say is that the connectors (iPhone and usb C) could be better protected, they’re covered by an easily lost piece of silicone/rubber.
Apart from that though, it’s a great handy device to have! You’ll just need to make sure you don’t lose those pieces of plastic that cover the ends.
This has a lovely quality metal clicky feel to it. The storage capacity is excellent and file transfer very fast. You will need an adaptor though if your TV/laptop doesn’t have lightning or usb 3 port. Also dropped a star on this one because there is no cover for the end so could easily damage.
This is a smart and quite innovative device. It comes in a small black box with detachable key ring and looks like a small rocket ship when twisted at right angles. Having both USB-c and a lightning port is a boon so can be used for apple or android devices however one port remains exposed but can be covered with the very lose-able plastic caps provided. I guess leave the port you use least out if travelling. File transfer using the JD Dive app is easy to do though you can’t leave your device plugged in whilst doing so. Quite expensive per Gb but a useful item for file transfers and backups.
Note…do not throw the supplied caps away as these are required to protect the connectors at each end. I would have liked these caps to be made from the same brushed metal but they do the job being made from a silicon material.
Its dual connector design with both a USB-C connector and a lightning connector makes it very useful for switching files between Apple and Android devices. I did use it to transfer some personal photos between my mums Apple mobile using the required app ‘JD Drive’ and my android mobile using the USB OTG functionality and it did work without issue. My particular model is the 128GB variant which is perfect for the transferring of photos, documents, videos, etc. between said devices. I believe there is also a 512GB variant which is a lot of on board storage but the smaller of the two suited me better.
Data transfer speeds were what I would expect, certainly not slow that was for sure.
All in all, this pretty much covers me for all transfers between a slew of devices, very convenient as a storage device.
I have an iPhone 11 and currently have over 60 thousand photos on it so I could do with freeing it up! (An understatement I know!) I found this really easy to use, plug it in and it prompts you to download the app. Once you have the app it’s really intuitive and I managed to start downloading photos in just a few minutes. I hit a slight hiccup which is something I will share in case you are in the same situation. It asks you if you want to save an album or your recent photos and on an iPhone “recent” means all of your photos which is what I wanted. I didn’t stop to think how long that might take!!! And. Because this plugs in via the lightening port if my phone isn’t fully charged how do I charge it should it get low battery during the transfer. All things which I didn’t think of and should have. So I transferred for an hour and in this time it managed to save 3262 photos which would mean a full transfer/save would take about 18 hours!
So my advice is to save albums as you can control how long it takes and it also stops you from transferring photos you probably don’t really need as well (we all have them on our phone! Usually I have about ten of the kids just to get one good photo where they’re all smiling!)
Great, easy to use memory stick just make sure to plan your saves and fully charge your phone if like me you have an epic amount of photos to save!
I tested this first with an iPhone XS. You do have to install an app first though which I think is a bit of a faff but this is down to how Apple’s iOS works not the drive itself. Once the app is installed it detects the JD Drive and you can then create folders, transfer files and so on. It works faultlessly and would be ideal if you have a phone with the minimum spec storage. Also good for the iPhone photographers amongst us. You can store your photos on the drive and free up room on your phone. It does take a little while to copy photos from your phone to the JD Drive, especially if you are transferring a lot of photos. Still useful though.
Next, I tested the drive on my Mac, plugging it in via USB C. I run a Hackintosh, a PC modified to run macOS so I have a wide selection of ports available including USB C. The drive was recognised straight away and I could see via the info that it was formatted as exFAT with a capacity of just over 250 GB.
I performed a speed test on the drive and the write speed was a respectable 67.4 MB/s but the read speed was just 75.4 MB/s. I expected more. I have several other USB 3.1 drives here that show similar write speeds but read speeds are up toward 280 MB/s. However, the key thing we need to remember with the JD Drive is “versatility”. There is plenty of other USB 3.1/USB C drives out there with higher read speeds but, how many of them can connect directly to your iPhone or iPad? So it is a compromise between functionality, speed and price and I think JD have the balance about right.

This item is easy to use – just plug it in, download an app on your phone and you’re away (app is called JD Drive) you can then transfer files from your iPhone to the stick and back again.
Only slight gripe is in the design itself – whilst a lovely item you are also given a keyring loop in the pack – you can then, I assume, add it to your keys. But i think this is going to take some grief when chucked in bags and pockets – I suspect the lightning connector or usb-c connector will be susceptible to damage as there is always at least one port “on show” if you could cover both ports then that’d be better.
Assuming you’re more careful than me at looking after fairly delicate items then that shouldn’t be a huge issue for most people – It’s just a minor criticism on what is otherwise a very substantial item.
Flash drives tend to be a commodity these days with the emphasis on cost per gigabyte. Two key points about this flash drive are that it pivots between a (Mac) Lightning and USB C connector and thought has been put into the software interface. The choice of connectors reduces the need to carry around adapters unless you have any hardware with previous USB socket versions or only Lightning.
For years I have only ever used Dropbox for security reasons and Apple back up on my phone. Most data including photos is synchronised across Macs, tablets and phones with the belt and braces of RAID (dual synchronised hard drives) for the Macs. Email is also backed up via MS Exchange.
Regardless of encryption I wouldn’t trust work data to a flash drive and it has been difficult to identify the place of flash drives in an era of cloud back up and transfer. As a result, very neat flash drives have ended up left in a muddle drawer of kit that ‘might’ be of use.
An occurrence a few months ago illustrated the continued merits of flash drives. One La Cie RAID array developed an electronic fault in the casing and automatic synchronisation to Dropbox stopped. I needed some regular back up for day to day work and was thankful that I could plug in a flash drive as a temporary measure. Still only a stop gap and it would need only the most basic kit.
Another situation demonstrated the potential value of this dual connector drive. I needed to help someone whose older model IPad was misbehaving, it was at capacity and they didn’t use cloud storage. They had a PC to back up to and a flash drive (both USB C) but no lightening adapter. It became quite a fiddle and this flash drive would have served as a swift removal van to move data.
We hold no data on equipment taken out and about (phones tablets or laptops). This flash drive therefore falls into the ‘potentially useful’ and I carry with me along with spare leads and so on. The dual connector makes it handier than single connector drives.
I can’t see it being advisable for any flash drive to be used as the only copy of archive or overspill data because they can, rarely, fail completely with all contents lost. The 2 key applications seem to be:
* backup for those who do not want to pay for cloud storage. The software and interface enables swift one button copying of selected data. Leave it in the back of the unit and remember to back up regularly. This applies to any flash drive.
* This dual adapter flash comes into its own in situations where there is a need to transfer data between older non USB C Apple products (where lightning is sometimes the only plug in option) and the increasingly ubiquitous USB C (on both OS and other software systems).
Overall
Assessed as a simple flash drive, the software and interface make it user friendly. Speed as well as price per megabyte are middle of the road.
Where this flash has the edge above, say, Sandisk, which is a good benchmark for speed/cost/quality is the swivel with dual connector. As with the implement on penknives to take stones out of horses hooves, the need might not arise regularly but when you need it, you need it (as anyone who has been stuck for the want of the correct connectors will know).
Comparable with plenty of flash drives for back up and if you identify a need to swap between connectors or find some interface software wanting, you are likely to find this item of specific application.
The first thing I do with any flash drive is test the capacity. I formatted the drive and ran a 2 hour test on it and as you can see in my image, every byte was written to and read from meaning the capacity advertised is genuine. Also has good transfer speeds via USB 3.0.
The drive looks and feels really nice but it did get quite hot during transfer. Saying that though I did put as much load as possible on it so it wasn’t a typical usage, but it was quite warm. I also wish it came with a cap to protect the connector as you either have to have the USB-C or lightning port exposed at all times. If you have an iPhone though it’s definitely handy being able to use the same drive for between apple and non-apple devices.
It’s a nice little usb stick but it’s very expensive. A lot of the functionality comes from their app which has features like backing up photos etc but there are many apps that can do that so my review is focused on the drive itself. It’s mostly going to come down to how much you need the convenience of using a single drive between multiple devices that use a combination of lightning and usb-c.
