These are quite expensive but worth it. I previously chose the old filament style with glass baubles. They were expensive to use @ 400 watts x 2 sets. I was sceptical about the LEDs but the light given is if equal ambiance. The plastic baubles are durable and don’t break in the wind and they are cheaper to use. Win win.
These are some good string lights. Lots of bulbs for the money and they are definitely not gonna break as they are semi soft plastic, almost bouncy.
I didn’t really get a chance to test the weatherproofness as I’ve put them up inside, but from my experience, they would easily last up to 2 years in the elements. The build quality seems very solid
Just watch out for the bulb size, they are only a big as a golf ball.
The cable to the plug is SO short it’s a waste of time. I ordered the extension lead the seller told me to buy (unexpected additional cost!!!) and it doesn’t fit. It’s not only not compatible but you can’t physically fit the two leads together. Waste of time money and effort. Just don’t buy either of the items. If the seller tells you to buy B08RJ9WNXF then ignore as it’s just lies. Shame because these would have been perfect if the wire could reach an actual plug socket!!!!
EDIT: so the seller contacted me to provide the correct extension lead and now I am satisfied however I am not sure how any other customers would know how to buy the correct one? I’m not sure if a URL in the description would help? But anyway the lights are well packaged and work great, they need an extension cable though there is no way the wire is long enough otherwise
You can stop your festoon lights research right here because you found the best ones!!
Here is all you need to know (and believe me, I’ve done my research, searches all of Amazon, got the t-shirt and spreadsheet!!)…
(I own ten sets)
– Firstly, the quality, effect and look is beautiful – they have the design and warm feel you’re looking for.
– Plastic bulbs, not glass, and crystal clear
– …So they don’t smash when you are installing them (or when changing the bulb) like the horror stories of other product reviews I read.
– …Which means you can leave them up all year round, wind, rain or snow!
– LED
– …So they cost next to nothing to run and are safe at 0.6w per bulb
– …And don’t get me started on their lifespan of 30,000 hours
– …That’s three and a half years
– …Or 5,000 evenings (dusk til midnight!)
– …And when a bulb does go (in 2033) you can replace them because they’re standard E12/G40 screw in bulb fittings
– …Which are better than other festoon lights that use the smaller G30 – these slightly larger G40’s are a better proportioned bulb giving the effect you want outdoors
– They have the most bulbs per metre
– …Therefore, the lowest cost per bulb
– …With 27 bulbs on 30ft (9 metres) of cable
– …That’s one bulb each foot, or three per metre.
– You can connect up to 49 lengths!
– …Yes! That’s 1,323 lights in total
– …Over a distance of 40,000 feet!!
– …And they first screw together!
– They are mains driven with no transformer
– …Meaning you can hard wire them into outside lights with no need for an outside socket
– …Or use in a waterproof socket with no bulky transformer to fit in!
– They have a hook instead of eyelet
– …Meaning hanging and removing is easier, not having to thread them onto string/wire and they’ll hook to plants or wire easily
If I could change one thing it would be to have a dimmer to dial up and down the brightness. Our garden has existing up/down lights that are each 3W and provide a nice 2700K light. These festoon lights are each a tiny 0.6W and when in a row with 27 others, and with ten other lengths connected together, obviously produce a lot of light. They are still the same ‘romantic’ soft yellow that you want, but if installed in a small area m they light up my patio in their own right – I could easily turn off my other up/down lights and these festoons produce easily enough for a garden party.
They really are the best you can buy and at the time of buying they are starting to sell out quickly because spreadsheet-minding people like me are realising these are easily the best.
And no, I wasn’t paid for this review 🙂
*difficult to do them justice in a photo due to under/over exposure so I took one of each. In the photo you can see just about three of our ten lengths connected together.
Added 10-04-’21: There are moulded hooks on the bulb holders. I have attached my string lights to a wooden pergola using staples as shown. Hope the photos are of help.
Word of warning; As can be seen in the photos, I have positioned some (12) lights horizontally. In rain and high wind water has infiltrated a few bulbs. They still work OK but it would have been better if I had applied a sealer where plastic meets metal!! Vertically they are fine.
