Demon Music are happy to present – Electribe 101 – ‘Electribal Memories’, amazon signed edition limited to 1000 units signed by Billie Ray Martin. This stunning 4CD extended version in deluxe packaging features crucial remixes, extended versions, radio edits and original band demos. The deluxe was compiled by club culture historian Bill Brewster. Both formats come with new sleeve notes by Billie Ray Martin, a rapturous essay by Pete Paphides and original photography from the era.

Formed when Hamburg-born / London-based, sometimes S’ Express member Billie Ray Martin hooked up with four musician / producers from Birmingham, Electribe 101 instantly hit upon a sound heavily influenced by the de rigueur deep house sounds of Chicago and Detroit but with a distinctive European twist. With Billie Ray up front, with a voice like ice on fire and looking as if she’d stepped forward in time from a circa-1966 Mary Quant catwalk, the band were instantly snapped up by Mercury Records, and taken under the wing of Pet Shop Boys manager Tom Watkins.

The band released five singles in the UK, and all featured on their debut album ‘Electribal Memories’ – ‘Tell Me When The Fever Ended’, ‘Talking With Myself’, ‘You’re Walking’, ‘Lipstick On My Lover’ and an incredible cover of Odyssey’s deep soul classic ‘Inside Out’. Remixes came courtesy of such electronic luminaries as Frankie Knuckles, Larry “Mr Fingers” Heard and Mantronix. When the album arrived in 1990, it was an instant hit with critics – immaculately produced, poised, luxurious and soulful, it was difficult to believe it was a debut record at all.

After ‘Electribal Memories’, Electribe 101 called it a day. Since then, the album’s reputation has grown in stature and many of its’ singles’ attendant remixes have become sought-after rarities. The cultural earthquake prompted by the late-1980s arrival on these shores of house, acid and rave prompted many a legendary club night and a generation of superstar DJ / producers. While there were a myriad of great club tracks produced in that heady period between 1988-1991, classic albums from the scene were rather more of a rarity. One towering exception was the debut by Electribe 101…

Had this back on original release. I was also at a gig on the Depeche Mode Violator when they supported. They didn’t get a great reception but it was a bonus for me as a fan of both. Mind you that was at the NEC which is one of the most soulless of venuesanyway, this current package.
Absolutely superb and for me the extra versions are a delight because I can create a massive playlist and sink into the music.
Sound quality is nicely balanced. Packaging is different as non standard size, notes on the band development are good to read.

I’ve liked and listened to this Band for years and was really pleased to see this Boxed set advertised on Amazon at such a fantastic low price. The discs have been remastered and how. Loads of rare tracks on this release and the sound quality overall is outstanding. Just a couple of tracks don’t sound as good as the rest but that’s only a very slight criticism. The only thing I would say that should have been done on this boxed set is the packaging should have been better. When you take out and return the discs to their compartments they are a bit ‘flimsy’ and could possibly mark the discs. But as I mentioned at under 30 for this set, remarkable value. You even get a signed print of Billie Ray Martin on this Amazon exclusive. Don’t miss out. Get this now. At this price stocks won’t last.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersElectribal Memories was one of my favourite albums 30 odd years ago and when I saw there was to be both a deluxe remastered CD version AND Vinyl LP I didn’t hesitate on pre-ordering !! Are they worth the wait ?

Well, it’s a resounding YES !! The Vinyl sounds fantastic …. effortless bass, more detail at the top end, without sacrificing the dynamics of the original.

The 4 CD set is simply amazing – pretty much every known remix plus demos and a couple of unreleased songs.
Again the remastering is top notch, breathing new life into what is a classic album – some have been disappointed with the CD packaging – I think it’s quite nice being in a kind of 7″ single size sleeve – at least it makes it easier to read the print than a standard digi-pack or jewel case.

If you loved Electribal Memories back in the day, don’t hesitate to buy this definitive edition on CD and / or the truly wonderful sounding Vinyl LP

    Highly recommended :))

Brilliant album repacking with remixes and demos and the original album over 4 discs. Great sleeve notes from BRM and nice artwork to look like a seven inch record sleeve. Only issue was the autograph was a bit hard to read on the included album image but still nice to have amongst my BRM collection.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is one heck of a quality album and this remastered and reissued 4CD set is more than welcome. Like others, I’m disappointed with the cardboard sleeves which makes removing the discs extremely fiddly, and my signed artwork is also inexplicably in the only black area of the design. The remastering is excellent though, it sounds crisp, and there’s an earthy depth which enhances BRMs amazing vocals. A must for the completist and audiophiles out there…
