Quality product. – Decent plastic, comes with everything you need (even screw drivers and a complete set of screws – but no thermal paste, so have this handy if you’re changing out the bezel) – I used the original Nintendo screws for mine just because I wanted to and could.
Not for the faint of heart, medium level difficulty. Instructions via Youtube available which is a great help. Just take your time and enjoy your personalised console.
The installation took me roughly 2 hours and this is from someone who has a lot of disassembly experience and has already taken joy cons apart before. But this is not an issue at all, just something you should be aware of.
The installation was pretty straightforward, the worst part was taking apart the triggers but had no major issues. I’m very glad this kit came with so many spare screws and springs as I had to use quite a few of these!
The screwdriver was fine, I ended up using a different set for the installation however as the bits kept falling out but I think this would be fine if you didn’t have any alternatives.
I didn’t like the clear buttons and they weren’t up to the same standard as the shells so I decided to opt for using my original black buttons which I think looks a lot better.
The shell fits really well together however and I’m excited to see how well it hold up over time as my original shell wore down and went shiny quite quickly.
I did have one small issue, a few days after I had been using the system, one of the screws on my joy con came so loose it was sticking out, I haven’t encountered this again but this is maybe due to me using the stock screws from my original joy cons instead of the screws included with this kit.
Love how they look, but just the disassembly of the Joy cons can be a bit of a pain, but the Assembly can go from a bit of pain to kill me now, based off what tools you have, how messy you are, and how much you disassemble the Joy cons.
Oh and there is no rubber on the kick stand making it even worse than it already is.
High Quality plastic. Moulding great and everything fits in nice and snug just like in the original housing.
Just one issue when installing the left bumper pcb into the housing, screwed it all down and was fine. Went to put the mid piece on and the two suppers had snapped. I Managed to use the mid piece to push the pcb down enough so that the left bumper button works so it’s not an issue. Didn’t take too long to install all the parts. Comes with all the screws and spare sponge pads/fan mesh grills too.
As recommended by other reviewers, I discarded the tools and instructions provided and instead used the iFixit kit I already had (no affiliation) and their instructions.
It was extremely fiddly and took several hours, but once I got the left joycon done (probably you should do that one first too) I was in the swing of it and was able to do the right joycon a lot faster.
The most difficult thing about the backplate was finding the screws, though protip on that one – the joycons use PH00 but the switch itself uses J000 which looks like a PH00 but absolutely isn’t, so save yourself some trouble there.
I ended up using the original buttons rather than the clear replacements it came with (plus a coloured button pack from the same seller) because IMO they look better, but that’s an aesthetic choice.
All in all I probably would have saved money and not bought the clear backplate since there’s not very much to see through it, but it looks good together so I can’t complain.
The finish on this is perfectly smooth and very, very high quality. Many screws kept going around when tightening though, and you probably want to smooth out the tiny bits that stay on the pieces once you take it out of the mould!
There is simply no competitor with this quality to be honest. Would totally recommend to any of my friends looking into modding their switch into something wayy cooler looking.
Be aware, manual installation is hard because what the product is of course: A literal replacement to the original plastic casing of the Switch. It took me a handful of hours and video watching. eXtremeRate uploaded a vid to youtube showing the process. Welcome yourself to it.
Not too bad for my first try, YouTube tutorials as everywhere and having delicate hands and patience is important to make your joycons work..
you need some proper prying tools and tweezers which it doesn’t include
Back case was thicker leading it hard to dock your Nintendo switch. Im buying my own Diy dock case where its makes the switch breathe better so I don’t mind this issue.
if you’re planning to have the back case and the original dock, expect some long term scratches on the black bezel of the scree
Fantastic product! Not easy to install as it takes a lot of time and it’s very small and finicky, I wouldn’t recommend it if you haven’t done anything similar or don’t have much patience. Other than that, it’s been perfect! I love how my switch looks now
Excellent product!, relatively easy to install, just take your time and you’ll be fine.
I’d recommend ‘Console and tech accessories’ YouTube Channel who provides an excellent step by step tutorial which made the process a breeze… but still quite fiddly.
The backplate quality wasn’t great :/ a Mia-aligned screw hole was frustrating on the backplate after spending 2 hours doing the joycons
The front plate wasn’t included which I had to order from Amazon.com due to no stock :/
Take your time it’s a delicate install the finish is good 🙂
Really sturdy, had a difficult time changing the back plate, I would say buy other tools than the ones given because the screws strip SO easily. The shells fit perfectly, no gaps or anything and they look impressive. Everything feels sturdy and secure and I just love how mt switch now looks. The stickers on the back didnt come with the shells.
This kit really is fantastic. I knew I would like the look, but I was worried the plastic might feel cheap. That’s not a problem. It has a smooth, silky feel and has a bit of flex so it doesn’t feel brittle.
There are no instructions included, but it was easy enough to find guides online. In terms of difficulty, the only problems I had were with the right Joy-con due to it having more components than the left making it more fiddly to both take apart and reassemble. I recommend leaving it for last so you have time to practice managing the ribbon cables.
The installation process itself was fairly straight forward, I used one of the many YouTube tutorials out there to help guide me, as parts such as the Joycons have sensitive pieces like ribbon cables that can be damaged if they are pulled while seperrating the internal sections. The key to swapping the Joycons and Switch shell over is to approach it logically and make sure to keep the screws and parts oragnised as you remove them. A YouTube video can especially be helpful for when it comes to reassembly as certain sections need to be put back together in a specific order.
The plastic of the shell feels of a good quality and photos in the product description relate well to the delivered item (in my case I ordered the blue shell). I used my own tools to carry out the swap and I reused the original screws keeping the included ones as spares. Please not that you will need to re-use the flap for the cartridge slot and the black retaining piece and metal arm that secures the kick stand to the rear shell.
It was an interesting 90 or so minute project that can be fiddly at points but is well worth it to give your Switch and Joycons a new factory fresh feel and look.
Looks great and the plastic has a nice feel to it. The tools provided were subpar though, I actually managed to chew through the provided screwdriver and had to use a stronger one
Bought the Atomic Purple set through eXtremeRate. Some items arrived defective, after contacting eXtremeRate they promptly sent replacement pieces and a crosshairs decal for my trouble, really great service!
Very good quality, soft to the touch just like the original Switch shell is (not glossy). Some mentioned about the quality of the 2 included screwdriver bits, the Y one isn’t so good so I bought another for 6. The included Philips worked great. Watch the Jerry Rig video on how to install the shell and take your time.
Amazing case, I ended up only using the cases for the controllers because the screwdriver that came with it stripped one of the screws on the the back of my Switch. Sucks but I actually like the look of just the controllers done up. In Changing the controllers I think I lost 15 years of my life trying to get the ribbon ties out and reconnected. DO NOT go into this thinking it’ll be easy, it’s terrifying but if you’re careful and take heaps of time it’ll be worth it.
It’s a good shell if you’re into seeing the inside of the console. Has a decent finish to it. It does require a bit of patience, and a steady hand to do, and it took me the best part of three hours to finish. The joy cons will take up the most time to disassemble and reassemble. It’s also worth getting a separate tool kit to complete as it will include more things to make the whole thing a little easie
First bit of advice I would give when buying this, is to go and buy yourself a quality tri tip screwdriver as the one that comes with the kit is not great. It might be Nintendo’s fault for using dodgy screws, but either way I nearly stripped a few of them using the provided screwdriver.
Second recommendation would be to follow along with a YouTube video as there are lots of steps to correctly take apart and correctly put your switch back together. However it is absolutely achievable by someone with minimal experience (like myself) provided you follow instructions carefully!
Overall the product is almost perfect, just a few little niggles such as the screwdriver and the lack of instructions provided. But it is very cheap and feels solid and looks AMAZING!
Amazing kit that will make your Switch look cool and unique.
As long as you take your time and follow a tutorial you shouldn’t have any problems 🙂
The only reason I gave this 4* instead of 5* is that the right Joycon shell developed a small crack near the “R” trigger a couple of days after installation that was definitely not caused by a drop (I treat my Switch like a newborn) or overtightening of screws (it’s not near a screw hole)…
I’ve reached out to the seller and will update this review when I hear back from them.
Nice looking shell replacement. The tools that come in the kit are quite useless as they strip the tiny screws. Overall a good replacement shell as long as you know what you are doing and have your own tools.
