Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersTo be clear – this review is for the BLURAY from RAROVIDEO released 29 JULY 2024. The transfer is good quality correct ratio, good sound (though the dubbing as usual leaves just a little to be desired). Location filming in barren scary looking territories helps the mood. The script has it’s moments, both good and terrible (mostly Steele’s dialogue which she utters with complete disinterest – more later) The acting in general is what you might expect with a film shot in Europe with a multi national cast. Top billed is John Karlson (no, me neither) as a direct descenedent of Van Helsing. Second billed is Steele, and if you are a fan you could well be disapointed. After 30 mins or so she disapears until the very end. When she is on screen she is terrible, delivering her lines as if this was her very first acting job, and of course, by no means was it so. Ogilvie is the lead, but billed after Mel Wells (Mel Wells!!!), and looking as though he hasn’t yet started to shave, and also very skinny! Good interview with him though. The plot is a bit hoary and the mix of “horror” and so called comedy do not mix well. However, I have to say Reeves shows real promise in several well set up and filmed scenes. I honestly believe he could have gone on to be a truly fine director (“Witchfinder General” is well worth seeing and is his “masterpiece”). A brave first film shot under difficult conditions with Steele doing everything in ONE day! (So I read). A bit expensive but even if it’s just curiosity do give this a go…It really is worth seeing even if not perfect.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersJust to be clear, the packaging for the Il lago di Satana (Revenge of the Blood Beast) blu ray put out by Raro Video has some misinformation on it.

    1. It states that both Italian and English audio are included. That’s false. Only the English dub is on here.

    2. It also mentions a new and improved English subtitle translation. Also false as no subtitles of any kind are included.

    3. It says there’s a documentary about the making of the film. Instead, there’s “A Bloody Journey to Italy”, a nearly half-hour long interview with Barbara Steele.

Awesome B. Steele horror movie in glorious eye popping Blu Ray restored color. What an incredible actress, a real icon in the genre. Wish all her movies were in color but her beauty and wonderful acting ability shines through either way.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our Usershis movie has many different aspects to it that somewhat mix well. barbara steele is a victim of being taken over by an ancient witch. she then is missing for most of the rest of the movie. her husband and a nutty professor try to reclaim her. in this mix are some comic bits with eastern european police. wacky car chases, mix with a would be rapist peeping tom inn keeper played by the owner of the flower shop in the little shop of horrors. the witch make up is poor and there is some blood and violence. it plays like a mix between a hammer movie and the fearless vampire killers in modern for the 1960’s times. the print of this movie looks very good throughout. if you are a fan of barbara steele or the director michael reeves, then this movie is well worth picking up. p.s. why is there a picture of the girl from she freak on the back cover?
