One of those films that passed me by. I watched it for the first time last night. If I say I forced myself to watch all of it this may look unflattering. Young people behaving without any sense of future. Young people completely enclosed in their own world. Of course this is what the film is deliberately highlighting but tentatively, perilously close to teenage sensational.
1983 insight into rich folk really is interesting. Crossing from conservative to unregulated living. I recall the Thatcher years with horror. The great divide so great it could not be seen or discussed to the point now in 2024 we can not even see the suicide numbers. National Security.
But if you can hold your nose at the flippancy of the ‘characters’ the film does step on those lines completely crossed in Kubrick’s 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut when greed is neither good or bad it just is. Must also mention the excellent soundtrack especially on good headphones; that Phil Collins drum roll really does hit home. And Tangerine Dream synthesisers punctuate and reflect the cold, cold environment. Nobody is.
